Cubs @ Reds: Hendricks vs Harvey (Game 72)

CHC (42-29): RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 3.55)
CIN (28-45): RHP Matt Harvey (1-5, 5.92)
First pitch: 6:20pmCST

Hendricks, who won in St. Louis his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER), gave up 3 ER in 5 innings for a no-decision in Cincinnati on May 19. Overall, the Reds are 40-145 (.276) against him. Votto is 8-16 with 2 HR.

Harvey gave up 3 ER in 5 innings and lost in Pittsburgh on Friday. He’s been as bad with the Reds as he was with the Mets. The Cubs are 15-43 (.349) against him. Hayward is 3-11 with a HR.

It’s Quintana and Castillo tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

wsox promote eloy to AAA.  he was pretty much making a mockery of AA.

d.cease to AA.  he was leading the carolina league in Ks.

cheer up, the cubs have david bote and duane underwood! seriously, though...getting Q for 2.5 seasons for a total cost of $25-ish million wasn't going to be cheap in trade. i got no complaints about that trade.

bryant - heyward - baez - rizzo - russell - schwarber - contreras - happ - hendricks

He's been a modest tick above average offensively by both wRC+ and OPS+ this year even while striking out almost 40% of the time. If he gets those strikeouts back to a more reasonable ~30% or lowers them (as we saw Baez and Bryant do in different ways and to different degrees), who's to say he's not a well above average hitter? As tim points out below, you never get to see that if he doesn't play. The defense doesn't compare to Almora's, of course. And with Schwarber's resurgence and Heyward's relative hot stretch, it is getting harder to see playing time for him. But things could change at any time. I like that he's getting some ABs.

What inning will Hendricks give up his first HR tonight? I’m going with 2nd. Votto.

Why is Hancock up over Maples? Kinda surprising since Maples has been really good in Iowa lately. Hancock struggled a bit in AAA before coming up and struggled against LAD. Maybe it could have to due with figuring out who starts Saturday's game (could be someone from Iowa), but Farrell makes the most sense to start Saturday's game imo.

harvey is throwing 97-98mph...hendricks is throwing 88-89mph.

that radar gun is too hot to hold. dunno if i'd trust the gun tonight.

heyward crawls back above .340 ob%

he's had 5 games with 3+ hits, all of them since may 29th.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
