Cubs @ Reds: Chatwood vs Romano (Game 75)

CHC (42-32): RHP Tyler Chatwood (3-5, 3.95)
CIN (31-45): RHP Sal Romano (4-7, 5.18)
First pitch: 12:10pmCST

UPDATE: Montgomery (2-2, 3.11) will be moved up a day to cover for Chatwood, whose wife is in labor. Good news--and a baby, too.

Chatwood, who had a no-decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday (5 IP, 1 ER), gave up 1 ER over 6 innings and lost in Cincinnati in his first start of the season. Overall, the Reds are 15-47 (.319) against him. Suarez is 3-6.

Romano gave up 7 ER in 5 innings to the Cubs at Wrigley on May 19. He beat the Tigers his last time out (7 IP, 0 ER). For their careers, the Cubs are 12-43 (.279) against him. Happ is 2-3 with 2 HR.

Tomorrow, it’s Montgomery and Maeda in L.A. at 9:00pmCST to start a four-game set, so get in your disco nap.

Go Cubs!

...and chatwood's wife went into labor.

this montgomery dude is pretty good, though.  monday's starter is up in the air.

also, bryant is dealing with a "sore shoulder"

Worst of all, we are done in two games by a guy named Winker.  Bad time for Bad Stropy — probably the worst outing a Cub reliever has had all year, considering the circumstances and lack of pen options. Doesn’t feel like this spiral will end any time soon.

As the old saying goes: if you can’t hold a five-run lead in the 7th against the Reds, you got major issues.

da fuq...

this team is 2 runs and 3 outs from dropping 4 in a f'n row vs the f'n reds...

bah.

this movie sucked.  let's slash the seats.

Although it certainly looked bad and tasted even worse, if the Cubs do get swept in a four-game series and lose four games in the standings to that team, it's actually better that a non-contender like the Reds does it rather than the Brewers, the Cardinals, or a potential competitor for a wild card slot.

Remember, in 1984 when the Cubs had the best record in the National League and won the N. L. East by 6-1/2 games, they had a losing record against only one team in the N. L., that being the Pittsburgh Pirates, who had the worst record in the division and finished 21-1/2 games out.

DFA rather than an Optional Assignment for Luke Farrell, which is odd considering the Cubs did not need his 40-man roster slot at the moment.

That seems like an odd shopping item with Wilson, Duensing, Rosario, and Montgomery on the roster. Montgomery is in the starting rotation for now, but that could change any time. Even if you option Rosario and keep Montgomery in the rotation, does a team really need 3 lefty relievers?

The Luke Farrell move was listed as a DFA on the mlb.com transactions page yesterday and on his milb.com face page as well, but it has been changed today. Why? I don't know. Perhaps somebody at either the Cubs or at MLB made an error and then corrected it.

This stretch has been rough to watch--so much so that I've opted out of watching frequently. But with Darvish, Duensing, and Morrow injured, Quintana and Hendricks underperforming, Chatwood being Chatwood and also unavailable, a recent double-header, and calling on Luke Farrell and now Duane Underwood to start games, well, a bad stretch is pretty understandable. I don't see a 10:00 pm game in LA curing what ails this team at the moment. Oof.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
