Lester went 0-3 with a 5.74 ERA in June, including his loss to LAD (4 IP, 4 ER, 4 BB) in his last time out. He hasn’t won since May 16. Historically, June has been his best month (3.41 ERA). The Mets are 22-83 (.265) against Lester. Only two Mets, Granderson (11-40, 2 HR) and Cuddyer is (5-19) have more than 6 ABs against him.

Colon lost to the Brewers (6 IP, 4 ER, 10 H) in his last appearance. He had a great start to the season, going 5-1 with a 3.31 in April but has been less effective since then. He went 1-3 with a 5.40 in June. Against the Cubs in his career, Colon is 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA. Castro is 2-3 against him, and a handful of others have a few ABs but no hits. Rizzo is 0-3.

If the Cubs offense is going to get it in gear, this might be a good game to do it in, although this line-up does not inspire the greatest confidence.

Go Cubs!

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs Good news for Cubs prospect Duane Underwood Jr. No serious damage to elbow it sounds like.

You know your offense is kicking ass when you pop-bunt into a double play in the 8th inning of a scoreless game. Fuck a duck.

7ip 3h 1bb 8k - 0r/er for lester...no runs scored by the cubs so it's a no decision. good turnaround. hopefully july will be much better.

It's July and we're ahead of the Giants for the 2nd wild card spot! Been a while since we've made it to July and still competitive.

Finally got it done. Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 3rd-rder Bryan Hudson signs w/@Cubs for $1.1 mil (slot 82 = $731k). Illinois HS LHP, projectable 6-ft-7, VG curve, hits 92 w/FB. @MLBDraft

I thought Castro's game winner yesterday - another game winner for our much maligned hero who also had another late inning error, was interesting. He clearly was trying to just slap the ball through the infield as if hoping nobody could make a play.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
