Cubs vs. Reds: Series Thread (Games 82-84)

The Cubs lost six straight, including a sweep to the Brewers, to drop to 42-39, good for second place in the division and 6.5 back of said Milwaukee club. They have three games remaining on the road trip and ten games total before the All-Star Break. Six of those remaining ten games will be against NL Central teams currently trailing the Cubs, starting off with a 3-game set in Cincinnati and concluding with a 3-game home series against the Cards. See below for the pitching matchups over the holiday weekend.

Game 82, Friday, July 2, 6:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Alec Mills (3-1, 5.11 ERA)

CIN: RHP Sonny Gray (1-4, 3.42 ERA)

Mills more or less worked around eight hits and two walks over four innings to surrender only two earned runs in Los Angeles. That marks a season high for him for hits allowed in an outing. Nick Castellanos is 4-7 off of him with a homerun and a double. Joey Votto is 1-11 and Mill has struck out Eugenio Suarez seven times in 14 at-bats.

Gray has maintained his usual low ERA and sterling strikeout rates in 2021, but he has made only 10 starts in the first half and has not made it into the fifth inning in half of those starts. The Reds, in the meantime, have one of the weaker bullpens in the majors and could really use some more length out of the veteran righty. Gray has not faced the Cubs in 2021, which is too bad for him because history suggests it would only help his overall numbers.

Game 83, Saturday, July 3, 3:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Adbert Alzolay (4-7, 4.55 ERA)

CIN: RHP Tyler Mahle (7-3, 3.74 ERA)

Alzoloy was completely out-of-whack during his last start, missing badly out of the zone and then in the zone. He managed to labor through only three innings. He'll have a chance to forget that one as he faces the Reds for the first time in 2021.

Mahle, who broke in with the Reds in 2017, took a big step forward in the shortened 2020 season. In his age 26 season he has maintained the high strikeout rate that lead to that success and added to it a groundball rate closer to his career average. He's 1-0 against the Cubs in two starts this year, having dodged a loss in the first one despite allowing six earned runs and taking home the win after five shutout innings in the second start. Kris Bryant is 5-15 with two homeruns off of Mahle--will he back from side soreness in time to face off against him?

Game 84, July 4, 12:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (10-4, 3.98 ERA)

CIN: LHP Wade Miley (6-4, 3.09 ERA)

You know who it turns out is a pretty good pitcher? Kyle Hendricks. After a few concerning starts near the beginning of the season, Hendricks has gone on to lead the NL in wins in the first half at 10. He went six innings in Milwaukee but allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. This will be his first start against the Reds in 2021. He's is the proud owner of a 6.67 ERA at Great American Ballpark over ten career starts and 55.1 innings pitched. He's allowed ten homeruns there.

Wade Miley is enjoying one of the better and possibly the best season of his career so far. In June, he compiled a 2.81 ERA and struck out 29 batters compared to 8 walks. He defeated the Cubs back on April 30, allowing two earned runs over five innings. Bryant and Contreras have both fared well off of him in the past, going 13-31; Bryant has a pair of homers off of him, the only long-balls against Miley by any current Cub.

Has Ross talked at all about Sogard's availability to relieve this weekend?  I think Cubs need to closely monitor his workload, considering how little he pitched last year.

Is it me or do the Cubs have the worst beat writer? I swear every other week it's "I won't be at these games, follow Russ Dorsey for updates."

I get that it's a crazy gig and he has kids but like... it's kinda important to be around for most of the season?

Why is this situation with Amaya and Marquez such a secret? Our top two prospects are hid out I guess.

In reply to by Hagsag

it took them a while to admit marquez was slowed by COVID...and he was supposed to be in AA weeks ago.

amaya's "undisclosed injury" took a long time to finally come out as a "forearm strain".  it's odd they would keep that under wraps...about as odd as a forearm strain that takes a month to get back into playing shape (and counting).

if you wanna track an under-reported cubs minor leaguer to keep an eye on, ethan roberts (righty relief).  he throws a bunch of stuff...doesn't have a big fastball, but he loves to learn and has a variety of pitches to work on to show for it.

wtf chris myers again...i thought we were done with that.

is beth mowins working something else right now or something?

Schwarbs hurts his knee rounding first on a single and can't continue. Sigh. He's been on fire.

At least it looks like it's on the right knee / hammy and not the 2016 re-constructed left knee.

t.williams goes 5ip 2h 1bb 3k (1r/0er) in 58 pitches for iowa.  he may be only able to go 80-90 pitches next time around, but he looks like he's ready to come back up.

hoerner playing 2nd...1-5 (single).  also, maples pitched again.

cubs lose 7 in a row...brewers win their 10th in a row.

cubs are 7.5 games back.

c.morel hit 3hr in a couple 6-inning double header games (2+1).

his K's are high and the balls put into play not going over the fence could use a bit more luck to help his average, but he's got 9 homers in 192 PA for the AA smokies.

2 more homers given up by alzolay.  these are killing his game.  homers given up in 10 of 14 games, 6 of 10 are multi-homer games.

he projects for 45-ish homers in a full 200ip season on his current pace.

cubs lose...brewers are gonna win (ahead by 8 in the top 8th).  CIN moves to 2nd and CHC in 3rd (by half game).

that will leave the cubs 8.5 games out of 1st.

we're moving into post-all-star break trade-off mode really f'n quickly.  stay healthy, kimbrell.

baez...bryant...will one get extended and the other traded?  both traded?

also, hoerner will probably be activated tomorrow.

truth.

they got him under control for another year and after this year's catcher disasters (from AA all the way to the majors) they might hold onto him for 2022 even if they can't extend him.

Welington Castillo has officially retired. He had a 10 yr mlb career starting with 4 Cub seasons. Inconsistency and all, I was always rooting for his success.

hendricks still rolling.

-awful- april...great may/june and now july.

subtract the 2 awful starts vs ATL (both in april, both 7er) and it's an even better season.

Gushue DFA, Cubs sign former Cubs farmhand Robinson Chirinos to major league deal. Believe we lost him when we traded for Matt Garza. Feels like a lifetime ago.

I wasn't young but definitely would qualify as stupid at the time of the Garza trade considering I was okay that the Cubs parted with Archer instead of another "can't miss" starting pitching prospect whose name now escapes me. Clearly I missed on that - along with Jim Hendry.

My lasting memory of Garza is him routinely flubbing bunts by sailing throws past first base.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
