Cubs vs. Pirates: Quintana vs. Lyles (Game 88)

CHC (45-42): LHP Jose Quintana (5-7, 4.21 ERA)
PIT (42-43): RHP Jordan Lyles (5-4, 3.71 ERA)
First pitch 3:05pmCDT

If you are able to feel excited for baseball after last night's game, then either you are a better fan than I or you did not watch that 9th inning. Either way, kudos. Quintana takes the mound, following a good start against Cincinnati in which he pitched six scoreless innings. The start before that was an atrocious 9-run bashing. It's hard to know what to expect from Quintana lately, but it sure would be nice if he missed some more bats and avoided homeruns for a while. Quintana made his best start of the season against the Pirates back on April 11, pitching seven scoreless and striking out eleven. Current Pirates have a .660 OPS against him collectively. Josh "MVP?" Bell is 2-7 with a homerun. Corey Dickerson is 5-11 with a homerun.

At 28, Jordan Lyles is off to his best start ever. The obvious transformation in his numbers is that he's continued to improve on his strikeout rate going from around 5 or 6 per nine innings 2011-2016 up to 7.11, 8.62, and now 9.09 in the last three years. He's also mostly avoided the HR bug that has plagued pitchers this year, maintaining a reasonable looking 1.02 homers per nine innings. The Cubs are 15-65 off of him. Russell is 3-4 with a homerun. Heyward is 3-7 with a homer. Rizzo is 2-14 with four strikeouts.

Happy Fourth of July, Cubs fans. Consider celebrating with some good deeds, donations, and/or activism.

well, bryant is good to go

3 pitch K for garcia...

Making up for it with stellar play in the field.

Missed the Garcia at bat. Any fastballs in the zone?

Nope. But he did make contact with the breaking pitches this time.

Improvement and thanks!

Nice at bat turns into a two out triple for Robel’s first MLB hit. All of Italy rejoices.

Len making his usual excuses for why Joe didn’t put in an OF for Willson last night. I feel like Len has delved deeper and deeper into becoming a huge homer.

I understand JHey being unavailable last night in the ninth but no one (media) asked if KB was — seems well enough to play RF today.  Len didn‘t bring up KB but should have given KB has played a number of innings in the OF this year and otherwise. Joe has not hit the right buttons often enough in the command ship. Not all on him by any stretch but he’s slumping too.

Good throw nails him. Sigh

garcia triple!

welcome to the bigtime

Damn they’re working over Bote with fastballs just above the strike zone. Launch angle guy kryptonite

that’s the scouting report on almost the whole team.

schwarb, baez, bote, etc

Guess Joe didn’t want to stick around and see how we blow today’s lead!

First a players only meeting, then a team meeting and now Joe’s been tossed from a game. Not much left in the bag.

Nice job by Robel staying back on the breaking ball for his second hit.

Surprised Bote staying in the game after taking a fastball(?) off the top of his helmet.

Odds we see benches cleared at some point today? 25% ?slumping team, manager ejected, Bote hit in the head.

Hopefully it doesn’t come down to that. Brewcrew lost 1-0 to the Reds - hold onto this one and Cubs will be tied for the division lead.

currently the cubs are busy assaulting the ERA of PIT pitchers

This might be the happiest I’ve ever seen Q with the Cubs - he was stoked coming home on Javy’s single.

Wow - Robel goes yard to dead center!

This lead is almost big enough to put Descalso in the game.

garcia a double away from the cycle

First Cubs player to homer and triple in his first major league start since ...

Starlin Castro on 5/7/2010

I don't think the fireworks tonight could possibly compare to what could be coming July 12th weekend when the Cubs get the Pirates at home.  Anyone want to take bets on who will be the one to clear the benches, maybe Hamels will be back by then.

clint hurdle was totally unimpressed with maddon’s temper tantrum.  he wasn’t mad...he wasn’t buying it.

I’m going to be at those games. I hope the Cubs start the second half of the season strong. A sweep would be sweet!

Down three in WC with 6 to play, if the answer isn’t “everyone” you’re doing it wrong.

Do you know who was available to pitch in relief?

cubs lose their 6th in a row, 5 in a row by 1 run.

MIL won and has a 4 game lead for the 2nd WC slot.

    xrays negative on bryant's ankle.

I liked the idea if not the result.

Another Joe Maddon baffling decision. I wonder if Wittenmyer will say it was Theos fault.

Edit: to stem the tide, he goes with Pedro Strop. Gotta give Pedro the chance to work his way back into postseason favor!

Even if we allow Hendricks to be called the ace, Lester is a 4. The others are 5s. That’s not a rotation that leads anyone to the postseason.

...and the cardinals have the lead.

    sigh.

    why is darvish still pitching...

you'd assume they have to bring in an ace of some sorts because none of those 6 are any better than a 2-3 slot rotation type as we know them now.

well, to be fair hendricks is an ace on paper, but even if he keeps doing what he's doing for another decade i dunno if i would ever feel comfortable calling the dude throwing 86mph an ace.  he's earned ace status, though.  meh, semantics...and prejustice against soft tossers...

We’d be in deep, deep trouble if that’s the starting 5 next March. I’d think only one of those 3 start the year in the rotation. Trades or maybe FA signings will fill out rotation.

  • crunch 6 hours 16 min ago (view)

that would make the offseason interesting if he did.

no ham, no darvish, lester pitching like a middle/end rotation guy...

Q and hendricks locked in with lester...graveman + a.mills + chatwood could compete to slot in, but it's highly unlikely they're the full answer for both slots...

Anybody else getting the feeling Yu might opt out?

Words I’d never thought I’d say. I’m even more surprised that I’d rather he not opt out!

...and k.bryant screws his leg/knee/ankle reaching trying to beat out a single...which he didn't.

he's being helped off the field.  neat.

    i.happ playing 3rd because whatever.

cards have caught one hell of a case of cubbery in the bottom 1st.

    3 miscues, 1 cubs run.

I think he made a few good points but was misguided in laying next to no blame on Maddon. He’s made many questionable decisions and plenty of those decisions have cost the team games.

Gordo was correct in laying blame on ownership. They hamstrung the front office. I have a hard time believing all they would have added was Descalso and Brach if they could have. Every time they had more money become available they added.
