Cubs Busy Beating Bushes for Pitchers

7/5 UPDATE #2

Casey Coleman has indeed been assigned to AAA Iowa and LHP James Buckelew has been assigned to AA Tennessee.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

7-5 UPDATE #1

Although it was reported in milb.com transactions, RHP Zach Morton was - NOT - signed by the Cubs and assigned to Eugene. The pitcher assigned to Eugene was Cubs 2018 8th round draft pick Zach Mort. Kudos to TCR's baseballfan67 for this.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After signing 14 pitchers selected in last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft and a couple of high-profile 2018-19 J-2 IFA pitchers, the Cubs have also added three pitchers with previous professional experience (including some MLB time) to their minor league system in the last 48 hours:

The contract of veteran RHP Casey Coleman was purchased from the Sugar Land Skeeters (Atlantic League). He has not yet been assigned to a Cubs minor league affiliate (physical pending). Now 31, Coleman was the Cubs 15th round draft pick out of Florida Gulf Coast in 2008 and pitched for the Cubs at the MLB level off-and-on in 2010-12 before being released in 2014 and signing with the Kansas City Royals (and he pitched briefly in MLB with them that season). He spent 2015-17 in AAA with SEA, TB, and HOU, and I last saw him at Cubs Minor League Camp this past March trying to win a job with the Chinatrust Brothers (CPBL), but apparently he didn't get the gig and remained in the U. S. and signed with the Skeeters. Coleman was 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 10/38 BB/K and 24 hits allowed in 37.1 IP (7 games - 6 GS) for Sugar Land so far in 2018. He last pitched (6.1 IP) on June 28th, so he is in game-shape and he is stretched-out, and so he could very well go directly into the AAA Iowa Cubs starting rotation (if that's what the Cubs need him to do).

The contract of 26-year old LHP James Buckelew was purchased from the Kansas City T-Bones (American Association). He has not yet been assigned to a Cubs minor league affiliate (physical pending). The 45th round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2010 out of Collins Hill HS - Suwanee, GA (he did not sign), Buckelew spent four years at Belmont University before signing with the Miami Marlins in 2014 as a NDFA. Buckelew was released by the Marlins this past May after spending parts of five different seasons in the Miami system (he was at AA Jacksonville when he was released, after starting the 2018 season at AAA New Orleans). He has posted a 2-1 record with an unimpressive 6.75 ERA and 24 hits and 13/17 BB/K in 18.2 IP (six games - four GS) so far for the T-Bones, but apparently the Cubs scout who saw him pitch for KC must have liked him enough to "turn him in" (recommend him).

LHP Ryan Lawlor was signed as a second-contract minor league free-agent and has been assigned to South Bend. The 24-year old Lawlor was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 8th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the U. of Georgia, and was released by the Braves at the end of Minor League Camp this past March. Lawlor is the second pitcher selected by the Braves in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft to be signed or acquired by the Cubs in the past two months. (The contract of RHP Dalton Geekie was purchased by the Cubs from Lake Erie of the Frontier League on May 17th). Lawlor was a lefty "swing-man" in the Braves system and he apparently had enough stuff to strike out 61 in 47.1 IP (albeit with a 1.37 WHIP) at Lo-A in 2017.

Coleman has an outside shot at pitching for the Cubs in 2018 (but that's presuming he can get hitters out in AAA), Buckelew would seem to fit as a lefty reliever at AA, and Lawlor has already been assigned to South Bend where he will almost certainly work out of the bullpen (the Cubs farm system has a dearth of LHRP).

It is possible, that there may be something else in the pipeline for Morton should his playing the game not work out, with the front office. Zach must be pretty smart. At the time of his acceptance into college, less than 6 students from ETHS got into NU a year (this has thankfully changed). But the org now has grads from Dartmouth, MIT, NU, UVA, Brown, and others I am forgetting. Pretty unusual compared to 20 years ago.

PHIL: Thanks for the beating the bushes update. As I recall, Coleman - a Hendry draft pick - just could not locate pitches and he had a decent opportunity to make the big club. He was tried as a spot starter, and reliever, and did not have the “stuff” of a Tyler ChatWalk, making him pretty mich dispensible. I love 2nd chance stories (excepting child molester/rapists) so I will keep an eye on him.

Please let us know how Drew Smyly is progressing. We are gonna need him.

E-MAN: Casey Coleman was apparently throwing the ball well at Sweet & Low so it's probably worth a shot to see what he's got. The Cubs have gotten absolutely nothing from reclamation projects like Danny Hultzen, Ryan Webb, and Allen Webster (who are still at the UAPC in Mesa trying to get their arms into game shape), so a pitcher who is actually pitching in games and throwing a lot of innings is good.

Would players still be referred to as "second-contract minor league free agents" even if they've been released more than once and spent time in 3+ organizations? (Just for terminology sakes)

jdmym: Yes. The term "second-contract minor league free-agent" refers to any player who has been released, non-tendered, and/or whose contract expired at least once prior to accruing the seven minor league seasons needed to be a minor league 6YFA.

"Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that he is unsure when Yu Darvish (triceps, elbow) will resume throwing."

neat!

According to the MiLB website, they had Zach MORTON showing with the player stats bio, and assigned to Eugene.

That was around 12:00 PST.

Has this been changed?

Impressive comeback by the Nats -- down 9-1, with their season headng down the dumper, then they score 13 runs in 3 innings to take a 14-9 lead.  It's against the Marlins, but, still.

The bones of the Nats are just too good to keep sinking. Strasburg coming back right after the all star game will be big and would not surprise me in the least if they go on a post-ASB tear like the Cubs did last year. Saw Trae Turner hit his first career grand slam tonight giving the Nats a 10-9 lead -- entire team went bonkers.

zast followed with 1ip 0h 0bb 1k

coghlan finally got his first hit, but went 1/5.

neat.

Edit: I didn't mean for this to come off combative as it may have. That play almost never happens, and I don't think it indicates something bad about Coghlan as a player. I just think it's unsafe and put's the catcher in a position where in a split-second he sort of has to choose between the safety of the runner and getting the out. I generally like clever plays as long as they are within the usual range of safety as the rest of the game, like the Javy swim move. I used to love when Zambrano broke out the super slow curve like 3 times a year for really long at bats.

- And Javy could also break his neck too. - "somersault" - new to me too: "1520s, from Middle French sombresault, from Old Provençal sobresaut, from sobre "over" (from Latin supra "over;" see supra-) + saut "a jump," from Latin saltus, from the root of salire "to leap" (see salient (adj.)). Sometimes further corrupted to somerset, etc."

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

  • crunch (view)

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
