Cubs vs. Reds: Darvish vs. Gray (Game 96)

CHC (51-44): RHP Yu Darvish (2-4, 4.72 ERA)
CIN (43-49): RHP Sonny Gray (5-5, 3.42 ERA)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

Yu Darvish and the Cubs go for the series win in an afternoon finale. Darvish went six scoreless against the Pirates on Friday and remains winless at Wrigley. Derek Dietrich is 4-9 off of him and has tagged him for two homeruns. Jose Iglesias and Nick Senzel are 3-6 and 3-7 respectively.

Sonny Gray takes the mound for the Reds, coming off a 7-inning, 1-run performance in Denver that yielded him a no-decision. He earned a win against the Cubs on 6-28 with 6.1 innings pitched, two earned runs, and six strikeouts. Almora is 3-4 off of him with a homerun. Russell is 2-6 with a homer. Nobody else has more than one hit off of him.

Following a Thursday off-day, the Cubs will take on the Padres in a weekend set. It doesn't feel like it yet, but we are heading into peak hot-stove season. Teams have only until the end of the month to trade for players that will be eligible to appear on post-season rosters. The Cubs recently landed a defensive-minded third catcher, Martin Maldonado, opening up pinch-hit opportunities for Caratini or even potential OF starts for Contreras. There's not much else in the rumor mill with a Cubs' label on it.

Jon Jay - Trade Candidate?

I noticed that JJ was back from the IL & having a usual JJ quiet-productive start to his season. I think I love the idea of JJ coming back to the north side. Instantly makes the OF deeper no matter what happens with Happ or Zo. Lefty bat compliments AA in CF & can play good D at all 3 spots. Pretty even career R/L splits. Good career PH numbers if coming off the bench. Known quantity in clubhouse.

The post-seaon roster starts to feel deep & balanced...  with 13 position players including a bench of:

Caratini

Maldonado

Jay / Almora (one in CF, one on banch)

Bote / Garcia / Russell / Happ / Zobrist   (pick 3 for the 2B spot & two bench spots)

Jay--an outfielder hitting two home runs in 433 PAs with the Cubs.  Hasn't hit more than three in seven years.  Sometimes you give up power for speed, but there's no speed, either, at least in the form of SBs.

Fair points... but with this roster, I don't really care about JJ's power.  More than enough power up & down lineup.  I'm a bit "meh" on speed & SBs, especially in a 4th OF type on a post-season roster.  Call it Post-Traumatic-2018-Terrence-Gore-Disorder (PT'18TGD???). If I had to choose between a 4th OF who can pinch run or who can pinch hit, it's my personal preference for the PH. And anybody who disagrees with me is wrong & probably immoral.

Eh - double meh. How about just getting Curtis Granderson and calling it a day?

almora (really?) / baez / bryant(LF) / rizzo / caratini / heyward / russell(2nd) / bote(3rd) / darvish

Home run derby KB is a hell of a lot of fun!!

post all-star break darvish is some good stuff so far, too.

Little surprised Maddon pulled Yu after six innings and only 83 pitches - hopefully just trying to keep him fresh (and no injury concern)

JHey!!! Yu’s gotta be the happiest dude in the dugout

Finally, a Yu win at Wrigley as a Cub and a series win against the Reds. Could definitely get used to that!

c.paddack (SD) with a no-hitter through 7, 82 pitches

...and it's gone in the 8th.  now i don't have to watch a SD/MIA game anymore.

Gore to the Yankees.

You gotta be quicker than that here if you were shooting for a “breaking news” post haha

5:24 this morning.

The Cubs have optioned LHRP Randy Rosario to AAA Iowa.

Sounds like Cedeno is coming up? Didn’t sound like he impressed in his rehab at all though.

Maybe a stretch, but I wonder if the Cubs might bring Drew Smyly back as an LHRP (he had some nice K numbers for the Brewers in AAA) and give Cedeno his release.

Smyly to the Phillies. Carry on.

CUBSTER: Manuel Rodriguez was one of about two dozen players signed by the Cubs out of Mexico 2015-17 and he was one of the most-advanced (he spent three seasons in the Mexican League before signing with the Cubs).

    Hellooooo AZPhil,

Cool post, thanks. To go completely off topic - are Fall instructs happening this year? Did they already happen?

Grandal leaves Brewers for WSox, 4/73 for a 31 yr old switch hitting catcher that hit .246 with decent on base and power.

mekkes plays out like d.maples, but mekkes doesn't throw as hard, mostly just throws his fastball, and it has great deception.  both of them have no predictable command and control.

given that mekkes is only expected to be a pen arm at best anyway, someone might very well snag him even if they end up sending him back before the season.

if we still were in an era where you could have "specialist" relievers rather than this new era of innings-guys, he would probably be on the cubs roster given that righties are generally lost against him.

Per S Sharma: "Cubs have added C Miguel Amaya, RHP Tyson Miller, RHP Manuel Rodriguez and INF Zack Short to the 40-man roster, which now stands at 36."

...Manny Rodriguez must be a bit of a surprise.

    Interesting, thanks AZ Phil.

First.Pitch.120: Without citing the source, I can say that other than Miguel Amaya, no Cub eligible for selection in the 2019 Rule 5 Draft is more-likely to be selected (if left unprotected) than P. J. Higgins, and if Higgins is selected, the Cubs will almost certainly not get him back.

AZ PHIL:  can you tell us a bit more about the "likely" ranking for PJ Higgins? I haven't had a chance to see him IRL. His stat sheet looks ok but not necessarily above some others. Is it a case of the "useful AAA catcher who can also do other things while not destroying you with the bat"?

I hear you but welcome to the world of Theo.  The team is always a step or two away from the World Series in his mind, whether that is true or not.  Therefore, the thing to do on the margin is to trade top prospects or younger guys on the roster for that missing puzzle piece, not build for the future.  I had a front-row seat for this as a Red Sox fan.  If Pedro Martinez doesn't insist the Red Sox sign David Ortiz for table scraps and Chris Bryant isn't the no-brainer second pick in the draft, we'd all be wondering what happened to that Theo guy who was in the Red S

Shogo Akiyama is a lefty bat, career BA at.301 w/ Seibu Lions.  Recent OBPs: .419, .385, .398, .403 and .392. HR 20-15 in last 3 seasons Stolen bases, 12 in 2019, 18 in best season (2016). Defense supposedly plus-plus, 7-10 assists (10 in 2016). Clearly a leadoff hitter.

Little in the offseason could make me happier than the Cubs finding ways to retain the good MLB players who came up with them while remaining competitive. This Javy extension talk makes me much happier as a fan than the Bryant and Contreras trade talk.

  • crunch 6 days 6 hours ago (view)

"Javy Baez. The two-time All-Star shortstop and 2018 MVP runner-up already has begun negotiations on a potential long-term extension with the Cubs, according to sources."

also, some talk of being linked to shogo akiyama (CF, Japan, 32yo in April)

j.odorizzi accepted his qualifying offer (17.8m) from MIN...so did j.abreu (CWS)....everyone else is gonna play the FA market.

w.smith (SF) immediately signed with the braves for 3/39 (13m team option/1m buyout on the backend).  braves lose a 2nd round pick...which they'll probably get back when someone signs j.donaldson.
