Hammel (left hamstring tightness) departed after an inning against St. Louis before the break but didn't miss a start. He pitched a side-session on Saturday, which went off without a hitch. He gave up 2 ER in 5 innings against Cinci at Wrigley in June for a no decision. He is 4-3 with a 3.46 on the road this year. Righties are batting .194 against him this season. Bruce is 3-10 with a HR.

Iglesias lost in Miami (4.1 IP, 5 ER) before the break. Lefties have been crushing him (.354 v. 226 for righties). None of the Cubs have faced him.

Even with last night’s loss, the Cubs have taken 7 of 10 from the Reds so far this season. We’ll see Hendricks vs. Leake and Beeler vs. Cingrani in the twin bill tomorrow before heading home to (hopefully) beat up on the Phillies and Rockies.

Go Cubs!

Can't have Fowler,Castro,Russell in same lineup anymore. Too many outs with pitcher too

schwarb needs to see some time in LF if for no other reason than to keep him up once montero gets back... dat bat...

Bryant.....man, you gotta at least get that run home. We need Bryant and Rizzo to get going -- leaving way too many runs out there.

Bryant now 2-19 since the break -- I really wish he had't been at the HR Derby or the game -- I think he could really have used a lengthy break.

Great call by Joe to give Coghlan the green light on 3-0. Watching Castro at the plate is a very painful thing.

Quit f'ing around start hitting grounder to Schwarb at third and move KB to Lf

bases loaded and taylor fucking teagarden pinch hitting. herrera/teagarden/ross being bench players...wow. ...and that's the end of that inning.

My grandmother can swing the bat better than that -- oh my god. Teagarden just waving a mediocre fastballs. They didn't even waste a pitch on 0-2. Just threw another fastball down the middle. With the bases loaded. In a tie game. Wow. Bullpens should be interesting for tomorrow's DH.

on to the 13th... double header tomorrow. that should be a fun bullpen crunch. they might have to send teagarden down simply to bring an extra arm up if this goes on much longer.

well, that's official. this is the "schwarber game" tie in the 9th on a HR...lead in the 13th on a HR...also a single and a double.

cubs win! schwarb catches all 13 innings. it'll be interesting to see if he starts either game tomorrow. he's a young kid, it's possible. NYM won...SF is up by 9 in the 7th and most likely on the way to a win. PIT lost.

Schwarber. Simply. Schwarber. I'll say it one last time. Schwarber.

Oh. My. Goodness. How can you take him out of the lineup when Miggy comes back? By the way -- um, Dexter? Two hands out there. Awfully nonchalant on that last out. I think only Ramirez and Soriano (two names from our past) didn't pitch tonight -- although Strop, Russell and Grimm didn't throw many pitches. Fortunately, we have an off day Thursday. FYI -- Jason Motte now 7-1.

Factoid from the Comcast postgame with Kaplan/Hollandsworth: Only 4 Cubs have 2 HR's in in a game from the 9th inning and later: Sandberg 1984, Dawson 1990, Sosa 1993, Schwarber 2015. KS, welcome to legendary Cub company

Killer win! How awesome that we have all been interested in this team finally, this year. These kids, man... I am still however concerned about the team's leader who is stuck in a downward spiral this month, and went 0-6 last night. Maybe pitchers have found a hole, or just are content to walk (or hit) him. Or he's fatigued? Hopefully he starts taking better swings soon. Could you imagine Rizzo, Bryant, Schwarb, all firing at the samet time?!

I think Rizzo is swinging at some stuff he normally doesn't swing at down and low out of the zone. That and they seem to have given up trying to pitch to his zone inside, which makes sense. I would only throw stuff down and away at him, but the Cubs are filling up their lineup with guys who sort of dictate that. It's why we see such insane pitch counts from opposing hitters. For me, the strategy doesn't have to be club the ball in the early innings. Tire out these starters and eventually someone will get to him. It's worked pretty well all season and adding Schwarber into the lineup changes things a bit until/if they can find a hole. I mean, against Cinci, we are seeing pitch counts into the triple digits in the late middle innings. I would prefer they wouldn't leave guys stranded on second, third, etc., but this is a young team and they are teaching them to hunt for their pitch. I actually think it's an outstanding approach, and it requires some patience on our part. Schwarber seems to already know how to wait for his pitch, but I'm sure there's a hole there somewhere. I haven't been able to guess what it is. He seems to hit everything so far.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
