Cubs vs. Brewers: Darvish vs. Burnes (Game 2)

CHC (1-0): RHP Yu Darvish (0-0, -.-- ERA)
MIL (0-1): RHP Corbin Burnes (0-0, -.-- ERA)
First pitch 12:05pmCDT

Yu Darvish makes his first start of the compressed 2020 season. He'll have to follow a gem of a game from the opening day starter, as Kyle Hendricks was just this side of perfect and just this side of a Maddux in the Cubs' first win of the season. Darvish's 2019 was a tale of two halves. After struggling with his command in April and May, he started to get things together in June and issued only 7 walks (compared to 118 strikeouts) in the second half. That remarkable command of the zone allowed him to keep the ERA below three in the second half despite a still too high HR/9; he allowed 33 homeruns all told in 2019. Along the way, he picked up a Kimbrel-style knuckle curve seemingly overnight. In the offseason he added a pitch he is calling the "Supreme," which I like to think of as one of those frozen pizzas with a bunch of toppings. Nobody really knows how many pitches he throws, but it'll come down to the basics: command of the strike zone and keeping the ball in the ballpark. In the before times of this past offseason, Darvish and Christian Yelich were briefly embroiled in some potential sign stealing rumors. Darvish's suspicions are understandable--Yelich is 4-11 with 2 homeruns and 3 walks off of the righty. Eric Sogard has also acquitted himself reasonably off of Darvish, posting a .847 OPS in 18 ABs. Justin Smoak leads current Brewers in ABs againts Yu at 22, but he's struck out 8 times and collected 3 singles and 1 double.

Facing down the Cubs hitters will be Corbin Burnes, a 25-year-old right-hander who found himself booted from the starting rotation back to the bullpen early last season. Of his 62 MLB appearances, only 4 have been as a starter, but he finds himself opening game 2 of the 2020 season. As a starter, he's pitched 17.2 innings and allowed 21 earned runs and a truly unfortunate 11 homeruns despite striking out 24. He took a loss against the Cubs on April 6 of 2019 in which he allowed seven earned runs at home.

The Cubs enter game 2 in a 3-way tie with the Reds and the Cards. The Brewers and the Pirates have 59 games to close the gap.

I'm with you, Charlie, on the "Supreme" sounding like a pitch with mushrooms, sausage and green peppers - that came to my mind as well.

Willson is so damn good. I know the front office LOVES Amaya, but Willson is one of the best catchers of this generation. They should in no way trade Willson to make room for Amaya. Willson is one of the crew that they 100% should be trying to sign to an extension.

I made it to game 2 before second guessing Rossy.  Why is Heyward batting anywhere above 9th in the lineup?

"Whose on first?"

That was a brutal sequence on the failed rundown

Darvish...worse

Defense...worser

Bullpen...worstest

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
