First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Hendricks beat the Mets on Wednesday (6.1 IP, 0 ER, 7 K, 1 BB). He’s has 19.2 scoreless innings in July and is 5-0 in his last 7 games. The Sox are 17-46 (.370) against him. Sanchez is 4-5.

Shields lost to the Tigers his last time out (6 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB). He’s 1-3 with a 2.28 so far this month. Overall, the Cubs are 16-69 (.232) against him. Rizzo is 2-5.

Turner (0-1, 14.73) versus Hammel (9-5, 3.35) in the good park tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Been quite the roller-coaster the past two days -- both games, plus the Chapman kerfuffel. How about a couple of nice, comfortable wins before facing Sale? Cubs should definitely wear throwbacks for that game.

...i hate espn. nothing like settling into a cubs game to get a few minutes cutaway for an ortiz AB in the 6th inning of the det/bos game. oh, at least they're doing split screen now...i guess.

Team is .500 since early May and is playing like a .500 team. Lack of offense seems to be putting a lot of pressure on the pitchers...and they aren't handling it terribly well. .500 the rest of the way still may win the division though.

I came to that realization tonight. I kept expecting them to play better, but now I realize they aren't going to. They are a .500 team now. - They have one reliable starting pitcher. Jake's magic is gone, and it doesn't look like it's coming back. Lester has been lousy recently. Lackey's ERA goes up every time he pitches. - Heyward has been dead weight all year. I can't remember a single series where he was a significant offensive contributor. Not one. Great defense, but but if he were hitting .270 with 10 HR and played average defense, the Cubs would be better off. - Zobrist's crazy May is long gone. The league seems to be better positioned against him now -- he hits a lot of ground balls up the middle, right into the shift. - Russell is a nice player, but average, if that, offensively. This puts all the pressure on Rizzo (who can handle it) and Bryant (who has one RBI in his last 16 games). Bryant is chasing a lot of low pitches -- it started with Familia in NY and continues. Last night's base running was also a killer. I guess I should expect "youth mistakes" from KB, but I don't. Then, add in the odd dynamic of adding Chapman (who said today that Theo never spoke to him about behavioral expectations), which feels like the Nomar deal in 2004. So, as you say -- maybe .500 from here on out makes the playoffs. But, it's gonna be painful.

Unfortunately, a pretty good summary. It looks like next year Heyward will be getting yet another batting stance adjustment. The recent good news has been Baez. I'm afraid about the next league adjustment on him, though, which is probably right around the corner. Bryant I don't worry about too much. Just not seeing the ball well right now. He'll turn it around. Russell's been good with men in scoring position all year and he's 22ish. He'll be fine but next year is likely to be his breakout year.

I expect they will go 5-9 games above .500 the rest of the year. 96-98 wins will win the Division. They should have one more 2-3 week hot streak in them. However, several players are just "average" for the last month: Zobrist, Ross, Russell, Ceasar. Montero is terrible, plus he cannot throw anyone out. -WAR. Heyward is abysmal at the plate, but a plus in the OF. Still with RISP he has been terrible. KB has not been driving in runs as of late. But Apparently the team is still above average with RISP according to S Sahadev. So, I just hate losing to the Sox, but we should get two here and typically these teams play even no matter the record. They sure can use the "good" Soler soon, however.

Interesting split on Heyward according to ESPN. As a CF, his slash line .292/.363/.375/.738. At RF: .212/.204/.300/.604. 21/72 as a CF, 58/273 as a RF. He's also been better when batting 2nd, but he had a nice start in the 6 hole, but has slumped ever since. He was heating up before the All Star break, but is only hitting .108 in the 2nd half.

If Travis' back-to-back-to-back walks cost Hendricks the ERA title, that would really suck.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
