Brewers Whitewash Cubs at Sloan Park

Trent Clark (Brewers 2015 1st round draft pick - Richland HS - North Richland Hills, TX) tripled and scored, walked twice, stole two bases, and drove-in a run with a sacrifice fly, and RHSP Miguel Diaz and three relievers combined to toss a four-hit shutout, as the AZL Brewers blanked the AZL Cubs 4-0 in Arizona League action Sunday night at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Javy Baez (on AAA Iowa 7-day DL - broken left ring finger) continued his AZL rehab, playing shortstop for seven innings and batting three times:

1. Popped out to the second-baseman in short right-field on a 3-2 pitch with two outs and bases empty in the bottom of the 1st inning;

2. Flied out to the centerfielder in medium-deep CF on a 1-1 pitch with two outs and bases empty in the bottom of the 4th;

3. Ripped a single between the shortstop and third-baseman into LF on a 0-2 pitch with two outs and bases empty in the bottom of the 7th, then advanced to 2nd on a Jose Paniagua single to CF (and induced the centerfielder to make a rushed-throw to third base by slowing down as he approached second base and then faking a break toward third as he rounded the bag), and then stole 3rd base on a 1-0 pitch (FEET-FIRST SLIDE), but was left stranded.

Baez handled two chances (both 6-3 ground outs) in the field.

This was supposedly Baez's last rehab game in Arizona.

Although he is participating in pre-game work-outs, CF D. J. Wilson (Cubs 2015 4th round draft pick - Canton South HS - Canton, OH) will not play again until August 2nd (next Sunday). He has not played in a game since July 13th.

Joe Sheehan ‏@joe_sheehan As of right now, the MLB unintentional walk rate is 6.99%, just the fourth time since 1908 it's been under 7% (1966, 1967, 1968).

Phil - has anyone giving any reason why Wilson will not play until next Sunday? It is odd that they would give a time frame without giving any reason.

i keep a close eye on the movement within the Cubs minor league teams. It is almost unbelievable how Jeff Antigua is bounced back and forth from Iowa and Tenn. I would like to see the poor lefty get at least one day in Chicago. Probably never happen though!

    I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

    amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

    neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

    In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

    Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

    smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

    this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

    i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

    like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

    anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

    Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

    I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

    If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
