Cubs @ Brewers: Quintana vs Suter (Game 102)

CHC (54-47): LHP Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.22)
MIL (54-50): LHP Brent Suter (1-1, 2.94)
First pitch: 7:10pmCST

Quintana wasn’t as sharp against the Cardinals (6 IP, 3 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) as he was against the Orioles. But he ended up with the win, so we’ll take it. Overall, the Brewers are 7-30 (.233) against him. Villar is 3-6.

Suter, who started the season in the bullpen, gave up 1 ER in 6 innings but ended up with a no-decision in Philly his last time out. In his 1.1 innings against the Cubs earlier this season, he gave up 4 ER, stuck out 1, and walked 2. The Cubs are 6-11 against him. Contreras has a double and 2 RBIs.

The teams start the series with the Brewers 3 games behind the Cubs in the loss column. Meanwhile, at 7 over .500, the Cubs finally have a water mark that might be called high.

It’s Hendricks (4-3) and Guerra (1-4) at 6:10pmCST tomorrow.

Go Cubs!

Schwarber is hitting 280/368/680 57 in plate appearances in July. Of course small sample size concerns remain, but still.

Ha! We share that same stat actuallu... Schwarbs is hitting .750, 2 HR, and triple since MY last cheesburger... I would like to see more walks too. And more consistency in going with the pitch. The last couple games before yesterday, he was definitely trying to pull and crush everything again.

Really liking the looks of the Cubs lineup tonight; especially Jon Jay leading off... Jay LF, Bryant 3b, Rizzo 1b, Contreras C, JHey RF, Almora CF, Russell SS, Baez 2b, Quintana P That's some solid D on the field.

wtf bryant and wtf baez. bryant decides to try for the double play (letting the runner take home) at 2nd/1st for some weird reason since he had the play at home (a force out, too)...bryant trips a bit while throwing...baez fumbles the ball. they at least get 1 out. also, Q isn't paying attention to a team that loves to run with a lot of players more than all of MLB so they're getting some big secondary leads as well as steals.

Usually if they are playing back, they'll try for two to avoid big nning, but with pitcher up...seems like going home is worth the risk.

nats get howie kendrick from PHI. KC game is over and still no word from PHI about who's getting j.hellickson so it may be MIL or the O's...or they're still trying to hammer out a deal with someone. he was pulled from his start pre-game tonight.

scharb in to pinch hit with a man on 3rd and 2 out in the 9th. ...and schwarb Ks. cubs lose. boo.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.
