Cubs @ Brewers: Lackey vs Davies (Game 104)

CHC (55-48): RHP John Lackey (7-9, 4.97)
MIL (55-51): RHP Kyle Davies (12-4, 4.45)
First pitch: 1:10pmCST

Lackey gave up 2 ER in 5 innings and beat the White Sox at Wrigley on Tuesday. He lost to the Brewers at home in April (6 IP, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB). These Brewers are 25-95 (.263) against him. Thames is 4-8 with a HR.Davies is 1-1 with a 5.73 in his two starts against the Cubs this season. He won in DC his last time out (7.2 IP, 0 ER, 7 K, 3 BB). That’s pretty good.  Overall, the Cubs are 31-111 (.279) against him. Bryant is 8-19 with a HR.

I admit to falling asleep in the extra innings—and getting awoken by the crack of Heyward’s bat and the out-of-town crowd at Miller Park. Davis made it interesting but nailed it down, so I was able to go to bed for real without having to break something.

So, thank you Cubs for not getting swept. That would not have been good. Now we can enjoy today’s game—and by that, I mean kicking the Brewers while they are down—regardless of what we get out of Lackey.

Given the tone of the comments and reporting over the last 36 hours, it doesn’t sound like any major reinforcements are coming, although you can never count out Theo for doing something bold on the QT.

Grey sounds like he’s probably staying put since the Yanks won’t meet Bean’s asking price, and I’m guessing Detroit isn’t willing to cough up enough of the $76m+ to make Verlander a Cub. He would probably be an upgrade over Lackey at the end of the rotation, especially with an NL-bump. But then there’s the question of if whatever he does over the next three seasons is worth what we’re paying him. That said, the Cubs are definitely in a better position to spend money than give up prospects.

If the Cubs do end up with Verlander, they should try to send Lackey back, so he can remain in a rotation, which seems to be his primary objective. And he can take Grimm with him.

Meanwhile, on the backup catcher front, there is Avila, who could come packaged with Verlander, and also A. J. Ellis, who knows catching coach Mike Borzello from their Dodger days. Two other teams are rumored to have talked with the Marlins about Ellis. Rene Rivera, who has a light salary ($1.8m for the year) and fits the defensive and framing needs, sounds like the best and most plausible option.

Tomorrow we rest, then it’s Arrieta (10-7) against Corbin (8-9) at 7:05pmCST on Tuesday to open up a rough home-stand against the D’Backs and the Nats.

Go Cubs!

Starting pitching since the break has been 2016-esque. Very nice. Next up: Brewers vs. Cards. Who ya got? 2-1 either way works for me. Don't really want either team to sweep and get hot.

That's three series wins in a row for the Cubs after losing game one of all three - unconventional but effective.

I'm starting to think that the new CBA has affected the trade deadline in a very negative way with the importance of having cost controlled players compared to trading for bad contracts. If Quintana ends up being the only big deal for a frontline pitcher to go down, then kudos to the Cubs and ChiSox front offices for making it happen, but it seems that teams with great farm systems like the Dodgers and Yankees are valuing their best prospects a little too much, and I can understand why Gray maybe won't be moved. Also, I mention the CBA because it's a no brainer that Detroit ownership should be eating enough of Verlander's contract to move him, but their stinginess in buying their way out of a bad contract is preventing movement of a player who logically should be moved and make some pennant or wildcard races more exciting.

"Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the Cubs could potentially acquire Alex Avila and Justin Wilson in a package deal."

detroit free press is reporting "The deal would be Justin Wilson and Alex Avila for Jeimer Candelario, Isaac Paredes and a Player To Be Named Later or cash" cubs giving up paredes as the 2nd player stings for a 1/2 year rental of a backup catcher and 1.5 years of j.wilson. he's not a badass, but he's a deep middle IF guy with upside who should be ready when some of the others age out.

If that's the trade, the Cubs will need to drop one player from their MLB 40-man roster immediately (as soon as the trade is officially announced), and then two players will have to be moved off the MLB 25-man roster after Avila and Wilson actually report to the Cubs. My best guess for the player to be dropped immediately from the 40 is RHSP Aaron Brooks, and my best guess for the two players to eventually be optioned to Iowa are Justin Grimm and Victor Caratini... that is, unless the Cubs have another trade up their sleeve.

One of the reasons I'm in awe of T. Epstein is that he's quite open to making a bad trade as the pennant races start to heat up. Gleyber for a half-season of Chapman was a textbook-terrible trade--except that Theo would say he traded Gleyber for a parade. And he'd be right.

Rondon in July: 10 IP, 4ER, 3.60 ERA, 13K, 5BB. - excluding the bizarre Friday afternoon STL game, when CJ didn't have it and Ronny was rushed in with no outs and the bases loaded: 10 IP, 0ER, 0.00 ERA, 13K, 3BB. I hope Hector finishes strong -- he handled the Chapman deal extremely well last year, than got hurt and was an afterthought in the post-season.

For good measure, in July: Strop 10.2 IP, 0 ER And, a bizarre stat: in his last 20 outings, Edwards has only been scored on 3 times. But, each time he gave up 3 runs. Confirms the "when he's on -- and he usually is -- he's terrific, but when he's off, look out!"

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.
