Cubs Acquire Wilson and Avila from the Tigers

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Cubs have acquired Justin Wilson and Alex Avila for Jeimer Candelario, Isaac Paredes, and a player to be named or cash.

UPDATE: The deal is official and Dylan Floro has been DFA'd to make room on the 40-man roster. The other roster moves will be announced tomorrow.Wilson, who was targeted by the Dodgers and Astros, has saved 13 of 15 games since taking over as closer. In 42 games this season, he has a 2.68 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 55 Ks, and 16 BBs. Presumably, he would slot in behind Davis and bolster a bullpen with an ERA of 3.34, which trails only the Indians, Dodgers, and Red Sox.

The 30y/o Avila, the son of the Tiger GM--and I thought my father didn't love me--is hitting .274/.394/.475 with 11 doubles, 11 homers, and 32 RBI in 264 ABs this season.

Candelario, 23, is hitting .266/.361/.507 with 27 doubles, and 12 HRs in 81 games at Iowa this season. He's ranked as the number 96 overall prospect by MLB.com.

Paredes is an 18-year-old SS/3B at Class A. In 91 games, he's hitting .261/.341/.399 with 7 HR, 25 doubles, and 49 RBI. He could be something, but it's really too early to tell.

As AZ Phil notes, the Cubs will have to drop someone from the 40-man roster, probably Aaron Brooks. Meanwhile, expect Caratini and Grimm to be optioned to Iowa to make room with the Big Club.

The Cubs should check the cab when they arrive at Wrigley to make sure the Tigers didn't stash Verlander in the trunk. (That would be some cab bill!) He and his contract are likely to clear waivers, so it's still possible for a trade to happen if the Tigers open up their wallet a bit more.

Because he has been outrighted to the minors previously in his career, Dylan Floro is an Article XX-D player and has the right to elect free-agency if he is not claimed off waivers and is outrighted to the minors. He can elect to be a free-agent immediately upon being outrighted (he actually has three days to decide once he is notified that the Cubs plan to outright him to the minors) in which case his contract would be terminated with no termination pay, or he can accept the outright assignment (which most Article XX-D players do if they are outrighted during the MLB regular season) and defer his right to be a FA until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season (he can file for free-agency beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up thru 10/15). However,if he were to accept the outright assignment and defer free-agency, he would not be eligible to be a FA if he is added back to an MLB 40-man roster prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season. If the Cubs are in the post-season, Floro could opt to not file for free-agency as an Article XX-D player and instead just wait to be declared an MLB Rule 55 minor league 6YFA after the World Series.

What do you guys think, are the Cubs going to get anything out of either the Anderson or Floro DFA, or do they pass through waivers and are gone?

If a "Player to Be Named Later" (PTBNL) is part of a trade, the PTBNL cannot be on an MLB 25-man roster (MLB Active List) at any time beginning when the trade is executed (filed with the MLB office) up until when the trade is completed. A PTBNL can be a specific player or the PTBNL can be selected from a list of players or a class of players as determined by the clubs when the trade is executed. Beginning in 2015, a player signed after being selected in the MLB Rule 4 Draft (First-Year Player Draft) cannot be a PTBNL in any trade made prior to the conclusion of the World Series. Clubs have six months to agree on a PTBNL, but the clubs can agree (when the trade is executed) on a deadline that is less than six months. A cash payment (typically $50,000 for trades involving players on the 40-man roster) can be substituted for a PTBNL if no agreement can be reached within six months, but the alternative cash payment must be agreeable to both clubs and stated in writing when the trade is executed.

On the face of it I like this trade. The concern is the same I have when we moved Rondon to the 8th which is that closers don't always seem do as well in non-save situations. In save situations this year (80 ABs) hitters have an insanely low .394 OPS against him. In non-save situations (60 ABs) they have a .786 OPS against him. Still it's a small sample size and we obviously filled two needs here so fingers crossed.

Brewers trade former Cub pitching prospect Tayler Scott to Rangers for Jeremy Jeffries. That's a ton less than they gave up to get him and Lucroy.

this trade deadline is on fire. darvish, gray, and a zillion other role players (especially pen)

They don't really need to fast track him... He's got at least 3 to 4 years (and 4 more levels before the majors) to develop still, but he seems to be right on track with the timeline of service years of Addison Russell so he'd likely be learning in MLB in the 2021 season (I think he'll be 22 then) and can take over the following season, although that's getting a little ahead of ourselves now.

So in the division: Cubs = Major buyers (starter, reliever, backup catcher) Brewers = Minor buyers (reliever) Cards = No move Pirates = Minor sellers (reliever) All make sense to me. Wish Cardinals did dump Lynn though.

LHSP Brett Anderson has been released (he was Designated for Assignment last Wednesday), and RHRP Justin Grimm and C Victor Caratini have been optioned to AAA Iowa to make room on the 25-man roster for the newly-acquired Justin Wilson and Alex Avila.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
