Cubs @ Giants: Arrieta vs Moore (Game 111)

CHC (58-52): RHP Jake Arrieta (10-8, 3.88)
SF (44-69): LHP Matt Moore (3-11, 5.80)
First pitch: 9:00pmCST

A trip out west—what could go wrong?

Arrieta gave up 1 ER in 7 innings against the D’backs on Wednesday, but it's hard to win a game when your team doesn't score any runs. Overall, the Giants are 15-78 (.192) against him. The Prodigal Panda is 3-6 with a HR.Moore lost to the A’s his last time out (5 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 3 BB). He’s 2-7 with a 4.59 at home this season. The Cubs are 5-18 (.278) against the former Ray. Rizzo is 3-3 with 2 HRs.

Quintana (6-9) against Blach (7-7) continue the series tomorrow at 9:15pmCST.

Go Cubs!

"Ike Davis struck out the side for the Dodgers' Arizona League team on Sunday in his first inning as a full-time pitcher." yes, that ike davis. 88-92mph fastball with movement.

Funky week in the NL Central. Cubs out west past my bedtime, and Brewers and Cards play their 2/2 interleague "rival" series (Twins and Royals, respectively). Scoreboard watching this year is exhausting.

BILLYBUCKS: We will be at all three Cubs games at Chase Field this coming weekend.

I have never missed a Cubs regular season game at Chase Field since the D'backs came into the league in 1998, and I was at one of the two NLDS games in 2007.

Conversely, I have never seen the D'backs play any other team there. Only the Cubs.

My favorite part of games at Chase Field is when the organist plays the "Let's go D'backs" riff and the D'backs fans are drowned out by Cub fans chanting "Let's go Cubbies!!!" Then the D'backs fans boo and the orgainist usually gives up and stops playing the riff the rest of game.

"Let's Go Cubbies!!!" really pisses off D'backs fans. They have to be told (by the scoreboard) when to "Get Loud!" or "Make Noise!". Also, in "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch, Cubs fans absolutely drown-out D'backs fans on the "Root, root root for the CUBBIES!!!"  line. It's really funny.

As I always tell people, living in Phoenix is like living on the far, FAR southwest side of Chicago. When I was at Arizona State in the 1970's, I knew more people there from the Chicago area than from Arizona. The first five people I met (just by accident in passing) were from the Chicago area. It was like going to Mars and meeting a bunch of people from the old neighborhood.

That's awesome, Phil. That's a hell of a streak. I went to a Cubs-DBacks game there in 2006. I wish I would have thought to introduce myself to you. It would have been way more entertaining than watching Juan Cruz humiliate the Cubs, the one time he did so not wearing a Cubs uniform. My folks are retiring to Goodyear in a couple of months (ie free place to stay), so I hope I'll have the pleasure one day.

Cubs: 19-9 August 2015 22-6 August 2016 2-4 August 2017 Got some work to do.

Only visit to Chase Field was to see some random game with a sales rep, but seats were 1st row behind home plate and the rep was a former player on the D-Backs so he had some very cool insight which was fun. Ballpark was kinda cool, but a bit stale and generic. (Absolutely no memory of his name)

Nice thing about facing 3 lefties in a row (Bumgarner goes Wednesday) is Almora in the lineup. At this point given Kyle issues at the plate and complete uselessness in the field and Albert's success in his playing time, he has earned the right to be given a chance to play everyday and prove whether he can handle it. I wonder if he catches the laser Zimmerman hit off Edwards if he was out there for example.

It wouldn't be surprising if Almora (instead of LaStella) is optioned to Iowa on Sunday when Russell is reinstated from the DL. Almora could spend 19 days at Iowa playing CF every day and getting lots of reps and then he would be recalled on 9/1 (when roster limits expand) without using up an option year (since he would have been on Optional Assignment for less than 20 days).

Tommy LaStella will officially qualify for salary arbitration post-2017 if he remains on the Cubs MLB Active List through tomorrow.

Unfortunately, being arbitration-eligible only makes it more-likely that he will be non-tendered in December.

I imagine his first year arb number would still be pretty small (<1.75M? perhaps ~1M?). I would have to analyze the AAA/AA rosters a bit closer to see how much 2B/3B depth exists, perhaps an unlikely 40-man add of the light hitting Chesny Young would certainly spell the end of 3AM. I'll place my bets on one more year in the org.

Moore has a 5.80 ERA and hasn't won a game since June 20th. So he should be good for 7IP, 2H, 0ER, 10Ks.

Brewers blow a 4-1 lead (those always suck) and lose to Twinkies 5-4 -- winning run courtesy of a balk in the 7th.

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
