Cubs offense is redefining "impotent" -- 3 hits in the past 14 innings.  Schwarber trying to bunt on 0-2.  Addison Russell.  It's ugly, folks.  Maybe they can string a few catcher interferences together and get something going.

"They've got all these super nerds in the front office that know nothing about baseball but they like to project numbers and project players. ... I think it's killing the game. It's to the point where just put computers out there. Just put laptops and what have you, just put them out there and let them play. We don't even need to go out there anymore. It's a joke."

jason werth may be out of work, but he's still doing his best to make his old job seem like the most miserable thing in existance.  i bet he's fun at parties.

AZ PHIL- Jimmy Herron was said to being needing TJS this summer, but yet he's playing in South Bend, did the Cubs decide that he doesn't otherwise if he still is going to shouldn't he do it the sooner the better?

cubbies.4ever: I would think Herron probably doesn't want to have TJS if he doesn't absolutely need it, and so far he is getting by without it. But if it turns out he does need it and it's just a matter of time when, then it probably would be best to have it done sooner rather than later.

Well, then again, you know, $43 million is a pre-tax number....

SAN DIEGO -- Former All-Star pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who earned more than $43 million over 14 seasons, pleaded guilty Friday to federal drug charges in California.

Loiza acknowledged that he possessed about 20 kilograms, or 44 pounds, of cocaine with intent to distribute. He faces up a minimum of 10 years in a prison and maximum of life when he is sentenced Nov. 2.

HAGSAG: He wasn't down here for very long, but I liked what I saw of Cubs 2018 #1 draft pick SS Nico Hoerner. He is certainly a Cubs Top 10 prospect. He is a good hitter and an above-average defender, and a savvy baserunner. As you probably know, Hoerner suffered a left elbow (non-throwing) UCL injury while diving for a ball at South Bend a month ago and it is still TBD whether he will need TJS. (Gleyber Torres suffered a torn left non-throwing elbow UCL in June 2017 after being injured sliding into home plate in a game in June 2017 and he was back playing in games in Spring Training nine months after the TJS).

Cubs 2nd round comp pick Cole Roederer is a legit five-tool OF. His draft stock fell a bit because he missed most of his 2018 HS season with a hamstring injury and then he hurt his non-throwing shoulder in an off-the-field incident, plus he seemed to be strongly committed to UCLA. But he is 100% healthy now and he shows a strong hit tool with power to all fields, plus-range in CF (he also has the arm to play RF), and slightly above-average speed (and certainly enough range to cover CF). In terms of his on-field intensity he reminds me a bit of Ian Happ.

RHSP Kohl Franklin hasn't pitched much so far but he has a starter's frame and has the four-pitch mix needed to be a starter (although probably none of the pitches are "finished products" yet). He also has a strong baseball pedigree (his uncle Jay was an MLB pitcher) and he has numerous friends in pro ball he works out with during the off-season (his father is a sports agent).

CF Brennon Davis is an athletic outfielder with plus-range and a decent arm and he shows power in BP but not in games (at least not yet). Davis is definitely more of a "project" than Roederer. It should help his development that he won't be playing college basketball.

Of the guys who were at Extended Spring Training, 3B-SS Christopher Morel is a Top 15 Cubs prospect, C Jonathan Soto (who was injured last night - see my earlier comment) is the Cubs #2 catching prospect behind Miguel Amaya and a Top 20 prospect, and Yovanny Cruz is the #1 AZL Cubs SP prospect (you'll probably recall my mentioning these three a few times in my EXST reports, so I won't go into any further detail about them).

HAGSAG: Grant Fennell was a 22-year old college senior NDFA who was a bat-first four-corner player (1B-3B-LF-RF) in college and he was a very good college hitter and so I would have expected him to hit well at AZL and Eugene. Remember, Eugene is approximately equivalent to D-1 college baseball.

That doesn't mean Fennell can't continue to hit at higher levels (he might or he might not), just that he will have to actually show that he can before his debut performance in short-season ball means anything. And his bat will have to carry him. He isn't very athletic and he has little defensive value other than "four-corner" versatility, and even then LF is really the only position he plays well.

Apropos of nothing, but I just heard on the radio while driving around this morning:

From Sept 1-4, 1967, the Cubs played 4 consecuttive double-headerss.  Santo, Banks, Kessinger, Beckert and Williams started all 8 games.  Hundley started 7 of the 8.  Different game back then.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
