Hammel had a no-decision against the Pirates on Thursday (4 IP, 2 ER). He was not happy about being pulled after walking the first two batters in the 5th and only throwing 76 pitches. The Cubs would go on to win 5-4. This season, Hammel is 2-0 with a 2.89 in 3 starts against the Brewers. They are 28-114 (.246) against him. Davis is 4-12 with a HR.

Garza beat SD his last time out (7 IP, 1 ER). He is 0-1 with a 2.77 in his two starts against the Cubs this season. The Cubs are 28-97 (.289) against him. Montero is 8-19 (.421) with a HR, Coghlan is 5-14 (.357), Rizzo is 4-12 (.333) with a HR.

Go Cubs!

On an unrelated note, I'd be interested in knowing if AZ Phil has seen Jeimer Candelario lately. He seems like he's bulked up a bit from earlier shots I saw of him a couple years ago.

O&B: I haven't seen Jeimer Candelario since Minor League Camp last March, but even back then he looked like he had put on some muscle from when I had last seen him before that (in Minor League Camp 2014).

I think Candelario has likely played himself onto the Cubs 40-man roster post-2015 (he won't get added in September, but I believe he will be added at the 11/20 roster filing deadline). What with both Christian Villanueva and Mike Olt being out of minor league options next season, Candelario will likely go to the front of the line at 3B in the Cubs minor league pipeline, although (like Olt and Villanueva are now) he will be blocked indefinitely by Kris Bryant (at least for as long as Bryant remains at 3B, which could be a long time).

BTW, the Cubs shouldn't have any difficulty at all rostering prospects (like Candelario) this coming off season.

The Cubs will have seven Article XX-B MLB free-agents (RHSP Dan Haren, LHSP Tsuyoshi Wada, RHRP Tommy Hunter, RHRP Jason Motte, RHRP Rafael Soriano, OF Chris Denorfia, and CF Dexter Fowler - none of whom are likely to return to the Cubs in 2016), at least three more aerbitration-eligibles who are likely to get non-tendered (RHSP Jacob Turner, LHRP Travis Wood, and INF Jonathan Herrera, plus possibly LHSP Clayton Richard and LHRP James Russell), and one more likely to get outrighted (RHSP Dallas Beeler), leaving at least 11 or as many as 13 MLB 40-man roster slots available for post-2015 Rule 55 minor league free-agents (C Willson Contreras and RHSP Felix Pena) and Rule 5 Draft eligibles (RHP Pierce Johnson, 1B Dan Vogelbach, 3B Jeimer Candelario, and RHRP Corey Black) the Cubs won't want to lose, with at least five slots still left open for any MLB free-agents who might get signed during the off-season.

I saw Candelario in a Carolina League game in May or June and was impressed by his athleticism--how strong he looked and how he sped to first on a groundout. The numbers show that he's also progressing as a hitter. I love the way players seem to get better--to actually develop--in this organization. This Almora turnaround has really gotten me bullish about the Cub program of sustained excellence. Speaking of speed to first--is there anyone on the major-league roster right now who runs as well as Kris Bryant? Everyone says he runs well for a big guy, but it's more than that. He's fast!

Random note: Last year the Cubs had 65 stolen bases, and were caught stealing 40 times. Only one player, Bonifacio (14) reached double digits. This year they have 78 stolen bases already, being caught just 27 times, and Fowler (17), Rizzo (15), Bryant (12), and Coghlan (11) are all in double digits. It's been refreshing to see a good baserunning team for a change, with guys who aren't burners still able to take a base when the opportunity allows for it.

Went to the game last night. A beautiful night at the ballpark. I think that we can expect similar outings from Haren and Hendricks over the next six weeks. Middle relief is likely to get an extensive workout in the games they start.

h.iwakuma throws a 116 pitch no-hitter for SEA. he's never thrown a complete game in his previous 87 career starts.

it's a tie game going into the bottom 5th. garza's not going to be out there much longer. 4 bunts to him in a row should get this game untied. c'mon cubbies.

"remember that time rizzo became a god to wrigley field fans?" "oh, you mean august 12, 2015?" "yeah."

65 pitches?????? Maddon sucks! (goes back into hiding) Edit - I don't like over working the bullpen.

that was just odd...and hammel was not expecting that. i get the technical reason it was done, but the dude was throwing a great game through 5.2ip only to bring c.richard in the game with a man on 2nd. it worked, but now it's time for the pen to get to work.

rondon puts men on 2nd and 3rd with 0 out...cubs up by 1. uggg. hopefully he's got more magic in his arm from the last time he had to bail himself out.

Dear Bryant. Two strikes and a LHP bottom of the 9th nobody out. Tie game man on 1st. DONT FUCKING WATCH A 94mph MEATBALL DOWN THE HEART OF THE PLATE FOR STRIKE THREE. It's not time to guess. Choke up and make contact. Move the base runner. And it's a frickin' LHP. Wtf? Dear Soler. One out same situation. LHP DONT FUCKING WATCH THE FIRST TWO PITCHES DOWN THE HEART OF THE PLATE. There is a time to swing guys. Ok I'm done. Fuck.

Soler has a strong tendency not to swing at offspeed pitches. Early on, he was credited with a good approach--remember "Vlad with an approach?"--and he has a decent approach, but mostly it's a tendency not to swing at offspeed pitches.

I think the Cubs saw the "boring" comment from last night's game and felt they needed to keep everyone interested. Maddon continues to be on a serious role -- Denorfia in to play LF for defense, pulls one out of the vines in the top of the 10th with a remarkable catch.

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.
