Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Lester vs Corbin (Game 115)

CHC (60-54): LHP Jon Lester (8-6, 3.97)
AZ (64-51): LHP Patrick Corbin (8-11, 4.76)
First pitch: 8:10pmCST

Lester gave up 3 ER in 4 innings for a no-decision against the D’backs on Wrigley earlier this month. His last outing was a no-decision against the Nationals on Sunday (6 IP, 3 ER, 7 K, 1 BB). Overall, the D’backs are 20-75 (.267) against him. Goldschmidt is 5-8 with a HR. He’s good.

Corbin went three innings and gave up 7 ER at Wrigley to take the loss in the matchup against Lester. In between, he’s also lost to the Giants (6 IP, 3 ER, 10 K, 2 BB). The Cubs are 11-37 (.297) against him. Happ is 2-2 and Bryant is 2-4, both with a HR.

Arrieta (11-8) and Godley (5-4) wrap up the West Coast tomorrow at 4:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Almora CF Bryant 3B Riz 1B Zobrist RF Happ 2B Schwarber LF Baez SS Avila C Lester P heyward is sitting a bit more vs lefties. hopefully he's not turning into a platoon player. hell, he kinda near equally sucks vs lefties and righties. it's more that other righty hitters excel vs the lefties than heyward is lost vs lefties.

Ya know, $53MM does not buy what it used to. Stop complaining! Blame Trump.

"I hear the Heyward family, who play for the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $'s against me. They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!" - Donald Trump

OPS vs. LHP: Heyward .691; Zobrist .576. Neither is a great option. but given Heyward's defense & base running vs. Zobrist's, plus an additional 115 points of OPS -- why the hell is Zobrist playing RF tonight? Banging on my own broken drum, I know, but Joe's Zobrist-love is out of hand. Joe says he listens to his stats nerds. I guess just not when Zobrist is the subject. BTW -- Best OPS vs. LHP? Rizzo .998. C'mon Anthony, get that power bat going!

well, heyward is a role player and zobrist is the cleanup hitter. the cubs need that deadly bat in the 4 slot. sigh.

Zobrist (.677 OPS) has got to be the most impotent clean-up hitter in the history of baseball. Seriously. He was a hell of an offensive player 5 years ago. He should be a backup player now.

cubs got him for 2 more years at 29m. at least they have the $$ free'd up to piss away should they decide to shift him while taking a $$ hit or just keep him on the bench for expensive part time use.

Classic Lester getting out of trouble in the first - nice dp started by Bryant and a big K of Goldschmidt.

bryant loves ARZ...

granted, only 2 of the guys that are in the lineup for ARZ are runners (neither is strong, and one is goldschmidt), but ARZ isn't even taking big leads off base most of the time they've been on base. they're playing rather conservatively with the running game. only big lead i've seen is marte on 1st in the bottom 4th. even with goldschmidt on 2nd, goldie was taking a very traditional lead as opposed to the "guy isn't even on the tv screen" 20ft lead often seen.

Schwarber and Happ having progressively worse at bats against Corbin ... somebody pat Zobrist on the head for almost getting a ball out of the infield.

no seriously, ugg.

Really thought Lester would outduel Corbin - Javy's throwing error broke him.

Braves ninth inning rally falls a run short - Cards win (8th consecutive) and on the verge of sharing the NL Central lead with the Cubs.

Didn't realize that Rondon hasn't pitched since 8/1. I know he had back stiffness, but that's pretty much a DL stint without actually going on the DL. He must be a bit rusty given how his outing has went so far.

peralta inside the park HR. this game is officially hot garbage. awesome. grimmtastic.

This pattern of winning the first game of a series then losing the next 2 is really getting old. Hope they can break the pattern tomorrow.

Rizzo's last 10 games: 0 XBH, 1 RBI. That's not going to get it done, RIzz. Maybe Szczur left some old bats around? Also -- KB with 2HR in his last 28 games. Pretty remarkable this team is over .500 with the 2 big guns not producing. Willson, we will really, really miss you.

zobrist goes down in the 9th during a 2-out rally with a harsh K. called strike...wasn't close to being in the zone and he didn't check too harshly on the swing to call it on that, either. 0-5 for zobrist. also, la stella went 0-1 ending his 3PA, 3 on base streak over his last 3 games. btw, dating back to his last mini call-up he's 3/5 with 4 walks in 9 PA...over 6 games (1 start).

looks like b.harper might be done for the year. pretty bad knee injury judging by how he reacted. slipped on the bag. game was delayed to start after a lot of rain.

"The good news is an MRI revealed no ligament or tendon damage, but the bad news is the 24-year-old MVP candidate will likely be sidelined until mid-to-late September"

"Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Scott Kazmir will throw for MLB teams this week.

The 36-year-old Kazmir hasn't thrown in the majors since the 2016 season, but he recently told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that he that he hit 90.9 mph with his fastball during a bullpen session."

someone put another bottle of left-in-the-car warm water under the cubs hot stove and let's get this one done!  woo!

bryce harper ruined that bat dragging thing for everyone after his ejection years ago at the junior college world series.

also, hurrah for baseball making it's return.

College ball started Saturday.  Umpire egos in D1 baseball are not that much smaller than in the pros, so of course there was a controversy.  In the late innings of a game in the weekend's biggest series (Michigan vs.

the news is mostly based on a Baseball America article from the 11th (behind a paywall) the gist of it is rather legit rumor-wise, though it's still too far in the future to call it a 100% done deal.

btw, the cubs have been strongly linked to pursuing christian hernandez for quite a while.  the BA writer that wrote the article about the cubs links has been following c.hernandez since he was a 14yo talent and is quite familiar with him.  that signing probably is in the bag.

I don't know much about this website, but they are speculating that the Cubs may sign two of the top International Free Agents available during this signing period: Does anyone know if this sounds legit?

Minnie Minoso was playing in the Mexican League (as a DH) at age 47 and Julio Franco was playing in the Mexican League (as a DH) at age 49, so Mexican League teams clearly do not have a problem with signing older players.

And of course the ageless Satchel Paige was still working as a SP in AAA (with the Miami Marlins) into his early 50's (and prior to that he pitched in MLB as late as age 46).

b.colon has signed to a mexican league team.  woo old dudes.  he turns 47 in may...believed by some to be older.

Increasing levels of smoke concerning a possible Arenado/KB trade

Get Arenado to agree to push back his opt out a few years or so down the road and this could work out nicely for the Cubs

Jason Kipnis (like Brandon Morrow) was a post-2019 Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signed a 2020 minor league contract, so he gets a $100K retention bonus and an automatic June 1st player opt-out if he is not released by 12 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day prior to MLB Opening Day or added to an MLB 40-man roster or MLB 60-day IL by 12 PM (Eastern) on MLB Opening Day.

The Cubs have signed post-2019 second-contract minor league FA catcher Jordan Procyshen to a 2020 minor league contract and he has been assigned to AA Tennessee.

darvish, lester, and mills could combine to give up 100 homers between the 3 of them.

I would have liked to give him a shot. I don't see much more out of a Chatwood and Alec Mills competition for the 5th spot.
