Hendricks is 2-0 with a 2.92 in his two August starts, including his win against the Giants on Saturday. He had a no-decision (7 IP, 0 ER) against the Southsiders in July. The Sox are 5-23 (.217) against him. Sanchez is 2-3.

Samardzija has not had a good year, to say the least. It was looking like he was getting it together in July, going 3-1 with a 2.27, but in his two August starts, he has allowed 16 ER in 9.1 innings (in losses to KC and the Yanks). For his career, he’s now 44-55 with a 3.98 ERA and has cost himself quite a bit of free agent cash. This is the first time he’s facing his former team, although the newcomers are 8-44 (.182) against him. Montero is 3-8, and Fowler is 4-18 with a HR.

Bryant has started a new hitting streak, which has hit 10.

Arrieta vs. Quintana tomorrow and Haren vs. Sale on Sunday.

Go Cubs!

it seems the de-emphasis of schwarber catching continues...not that there's much wrong with that. if i had a guess, i would have guessed he would slot in back behind the plate for today's game rather than DH'ing. he looks good in LF. sure he's a semi-chunky catcher guy, but he tracks the ball well and he's surprisingly quick. it helps the lineup excess issues that bryant seems to be playing well enough to stick at 3rd rather than moving to LF, too.

Will someone explain this interest in Utley. I don't get it at all. The chances he can out-produce whoever we throw out there is unlikely, and he sounds like a prissy jerk. The last thing this clubhouse needs is some washed up and entitled All-star.

i have no idea why he's so popular, either. aside from the fact his bat seems to have died (those articles about it being all "bad luck" in april/may have been silenced), his D (especially his range) has slowed down severely. he may not fumble the ball, but he's damn slow going through the motions of playing the field. totally meh. thankfully, the giants are the strongest linked to him.

"Will someone explain this interest in Utley?" Playoff experience? Outside of catchers (plus Fowler's 3 singles in 14 ABs in a 2009 NLDS) the Cubs don't have a position player who has been in a postseason series. Utley has a .902 OPS in ten playoff series, including two World Series in which his OPS rose to 1.183 thanks to seven home runs. (Tied with Reggie Jackson for most HRs in a World Series: 5.)

I would expect team Theo will do their due diligence and explore why he is having such an off year. At his age, is he just done? Has the bat speed died? Or has he been dealing with some injuries? I haven't been reading about the guy so I don't know. I also don't know about the whining stuff alluded to earlier. Team Theo is big on makeup, so I tend to doubt they'd bring in a whiner. He's had a nice career, but I'm not sure I see the need, veteran leadership or Reggie Jacksonish playoffs or not. At this point I think I just trust this FO to know what they're doing. They know a lot more about baseball than I ever hope to.

it doesn't help (well, helps PHI) that he's been hitting about .500 since he returned. it's a bunch of singles and couple doubles, though. if he was still a mega-slick fielder i wouldn't mind. as it is, im not stoked when there's castro/baez/lastella about to be thrown into the mix in september.

"He's had a nice career" Guess I'm a little more bullish than some about Utley (and I don't usually like retread players). It's just that when I think about Utley, I think of a hitter like Billy Williams, maybe with a bit more flair for the dramatic. And, in fact, the two players' career slash lines are quite similar. Williams: 290/361/492(/853) Utley: 282/366/481(/847) Williams averaged 28 HRs per 162 games, while Utley averages 24 HRs. Of course, what got Williams' foot in the door of the Hall was the ironman angle, whereas Utley has had significant downtime, plus he went to college, plus this is his age-36 season versus Williams' final-year age-38 season, with the result that Williams has nearly 200 more home runs. Of course, Utley may not be quite done yet. He should be pretty cheap, since he is old, and he saves the Phillies a few million this year and a $2 million buyout next year. He might be pretty incentivized to do well for the Cubs, since a heroic performance could earn him his usual big paycheck next year.

My main concern is what Utley has been saying about "playing time." That is not the sign of a team player. The team is clicking, and he could upset things. Of course, if Castro is going the other way, I might change my mind.

By the way, apart from Castro's non-tag, no one mentioned his foul out to the catcher. Castro was walking back to the dugout before the ball was even caught. It's such a representative behavior. He is not and will never be a consistent and fundamentally sound player because of things like that.

The issue isn't with Utley's career. He basically did everything well. Walked, hit for some power, above average defense, his stolen base percentage is 89% for his career, etc. His peak was ABSURD. He's one of just 15 players in history with 5 consecutive seasons with 7+ WAR. Among second basemen he is 16th in career WAR and 8th all time in peak (7-year) WAR. He's in the Hall of Fame debate, but given the lack of counting stats due to a short career, my guess is that he will end up in the Whitaker, Grich, Kent category and be on the outside looking in. But by all means Utley is one of the best second basemen ever.

But the questions are A) whether Utley of August-September 2015 is any good, and B) whether he is a good fit personality-wise on a team that is playing well.

I noted a couple of weeks ago that I thought the chances of the Cubs aquiring Utley was remote, and they would probably only do so after seeing him put up some decent numbers for a few weeks first. He's doing that so far, but only for 7 games. I'm just not sure the team pulls the trigger based on a week. But it's an interesting game right now. The longer he plays well, the more certain other teams are of his performance and so his trade value will go up. But that also means that the team that trades for him will benefit from fewer games with him, pushing his value down. So my sense is that the Philles are trying to figure out how determine where the value is most optimal for a return.

If the Cubs do get him and he plays like he has this past week or even in line with his averages over the past few years, it will be great. But if he hits like he did early this season befor the injury (under .200) then it will be a waste.

And on the second question: this is a team that benched a franchise short stop and forced him to change positions and pulls veteran starters early, etc. It's not a team where you can complain about playing time and expect to be out there everyday unless you are producing. The last thing the Cubs need is someone like that. So if there is any worry that that could occur, the front office should be hesitant to acquire him in my opinion.

I could be proven wrong, but my hunch is that Utley is not going to go to a team and complain about playing time, partly because he can pick where he wants to go. It's a nebulous concept for sure, but he's a "winning" player if there's ever been one. Personally, he's one of my favorite non-Cubs ever, and I'd love to see him playing every day with the Cubs just for that reason and to see what he's got left. They'd probably be just as well off not getting him and bringing up LaStella, but it's not like Utley's going to cost much. Worth a shot.

Kaiser? Schwarb, Schwarby, K-Schwarb, the Schwarbdog, Schwarbs, Schwarbster, Schwarbski. The Schwarbmeister. Il Schwarbissimo. Schwarbarino. Schwarbatollah. Schwarb-man. Schwarbito. Some are Schwarb; he is Schwaber-ER, exponentially more Schwarb than any other. Need to channel Rob Schneider as the copy room guy.

absolutely agreed. also, someone should invent Schwarbecue because it would probably be awesome on a pita or between some texas toast.

Hendricks showing what will happen occasionally when you don't have overpowering stuff.... And, just to remind everyone, Castro mishandles a throw at second on a steal attempt.

i disconnect my innerwebs to upgrade the modem and it all goes to hell in the last 20 minutes. blarg.

well, the cubs won...because that's what they do. yawn. good game, guys. this weekend's wins should be fun.

LHP Zac Rosscup's Artlcle XIX-C 30-day Minor League Rehab Assignment expired today, so the Cubs had to reinstate him from the 15-day DL and either place him back on their MLB 25-man roster or option him to the minors.

He was optioned to Iowa.

In reply to by Arizona Phil

And LHRP Joe Ortiz was released by the Cubs to make room for Rosscup on the Iowa Cubs Active List.

Ortiz was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from the Texas Rangers last October, and was sent outright to Iowa in May when the Cubs claimed RHP Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Boston Red Sox (The Varvaro waiver claim was subsequently voided when it was determined that he had a pre-existing elbow flexor tendon tear that required surgery).

Ortiz was scheduled to be an MLB Rule 55 minor league free-agent (6YFA) post-2015, so getting released now rather than waiting to be declared a minor league 6YFA after the World Series gives him an early start on finding a new team.

I'll be CRUNCH for today: CUBS WIN! 6-5 1/2 game behind Pirates for Wild Card Lead. Streak at 8 Pirates tied 1-1 now

Postgame trivia: Todays winning pitcher Clayton Richard and today's losing pitcher Shark were previously players for their crosstown rivals. This has happened once before in the crosstown series. Name the pitchers...

Not sure if this is 3/44 but EJax just signed with the Braves. Should see him in the series next weekend at Wrigley. Hopefully they will use him in a similar fashion to what the Cubs did earlier this year (in non-leveraged situations with the Cubs Braves behind by >5 runs).

I assume Soler will be back in the lineup tomorrow -- who sits? Coghlan hit 2 HR today and the Cubs are 11-0 (i think) when he hits 3rd.

Quintana is a lefty. I suspect Maddon will still play the lefty/righty platoon and Denorfia will play, Coghlan sits (unless he sits the Kaiser roll or Montero sits and Schwarber catches?)

All-America Game live @wrigley about to start. some of the best highschool talent in the game on display. okay, the gold batting helmets are f'n stupid and distracting.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
