Cubs @ Pirates: Hamels vs Williams (Game 121)

CHC (70-50): LHP Cole Hamels (7-9, 4.22)
PIT (61-61): RHP Trevor Williams (10-8, 3.66)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Hamels continued his very-welcome run with 7 innings of one-run ball against Scherzer and the Nats on Sunday, an accomplishment that was somewhat overlooked thanks to the shirt-ripping AB of one David Bote.

Hamels made his Cubs debut in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, going 5 scoreless for the win. Overall, the Pirates are 35-120 (.292) against him. Marte is 8-17 with a HR.

Williams, who won in San Francisco his last time out (7 IP, 0 ER), beat the Cubs at Wrigley on April 12, giving up 1 ER in 6 innings. For their careers, these Cubs are 21-82 (.256) against him. Happ is 5-11, and Schwarber is 3-10 with a HR.

Montgomery and Musgrove tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

Mike Montgomery to the DL.with an inflamed shoulder. Randy Rosario recalled. Tyler Walkman will start on Saturday.

Is tonight the night Vic breaks his HR-less streak?  Seems like a good idea.  127 PAs so far this year without a bomb.  Hmmm...quick check....only 30 HR in 2000+ minor league ABs.  Oh.  Well, hey, why not?

rain is f'n dumb.

tarp off, expected start in 25-30m

Cole Hamels has quickly fallen into my "I can have the game playing in the background and not worry about it; things will be OK" category.

Happ baserunning in the 8th not exactly textbook. Did like JD's comparison of him to a sliding penguin while getting easily thrown out trying to steal third with a lefty (Zobrist) batting. Zobrist, of course, singles to right soon thereafter.

I thought he was safe. But I'll take it.

Buccos have hit into 6 double plays through 8 innings - old school cubbery

Cub fans chanting "Bote, Bote" -- not something I was anticipating to happen back in March. Struck out on three pitches with a runner on third and less than two outs - but did not get cheated.

cubs turn 7 double plays in this 9 inning 1-0 cubs win.

neat-o.

also, MIL lost again.  cubs are quite solidly in 1st by 4.5 games, but now STL and MIL are nearly equally threatening rather than just MIL.

Orioles now 50 out.  It's not even August 20th.  I hope Alex Cobb is having fun with his 3-15 record.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the last time the Cubs won three games in a row 1-0 will still be the last time it happened after tomorrow's game.

Cubs should pick up Hamels option, If he keeps this magic up why not?  No other SP besides Lester has proven much positive this year.  Hendricks can't keep it in the ballpark, Chatwood can't keep it in the strike zone, Darvish can't keep off the DL, Q can't be consistent.

I am starting to wonder if that will happen. It would leave 8 potential starters who need to be on 25 man in addition to I think 6-7 relievers who would need a 25 man spot, depending on if Bass is re-added and does enough to not get non-tendered.

Which makes me wonder who gets traded?

Today I was watching the Pittsburgh broadcast of the Pirate sixth on Thursday, wanting to see Baez's electric tag on Marte's steal attempt. The announcers were fine, congenial, maybe even clever and interesting--until a cameraman focused on the back of a Cub-fan jersey, where the number was 16 and the name was RAIN DELAY. For their lives, they couldn't guess why somebody would put that on a jersey, and for the five minutes that they puzzled about it, nobody called the press box to tell them.

I noticed that they called Josh Harrison J-Hey (or J-Hay, as I guess they would have to spell it). That had me confused for a while.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
