Cubs vs./@ Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 20-24)

Coming off the equivalent of an 8.1-game losing streak (1-3 series) vs. the Brewers, the Cubs now welcome their St. Louis rivals for a 5-game series at Wrigley. Featuring two double headers and two "away" games played in their home stadium, it is likely to be an early contender for weirdest series of the year. The Cardinals begin the series an unlikely second place in the division, holding a .500 record but having played fewer than half the games the Cubs have played.

There's a bit too much here for me to preview on a busy Monday morning, but here are the probable starters.

Day 1, Game 1:
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks
STL: LHP Kwang Hyun Kim

Day 1, Game 2:
CHC: RHP Adbert Alzolay
STL: RHP Austin Gomber

Day 2:
CHC: RHP Yu Darvish
STL: RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon

Day 3, Game 1:
CHC: RHP Colin Rea
STL: RHP Jack Flaherty

Day 3, Game 2:
CHC: RHP Alec Mills
STL: LHP Ricardo Sanchez

Don't worry everyone, noted worthless catcher du jour Josh Phegley slots into the lineup for game 1, at DH no less! Our offense is saved.

he was pretty good in...hold on...ummm...well, in 2013 he had a great AAA season.

Ah, glory days.

Rossy pinch hits for Bote, a capable MLB hitter, but not Phegley, who is now 0-11. Little backup catcher bias there, I think.

bryant(LF) / rizzo / baez / contreras / bote(3rd) / souza(RF) / phegley(DH) / almora / hoerner

game 1

Where's the other split squad playing today? Scottsdale? Phoenix?

Tyson Miller starting game 2 today - Alzolay recently took a liner off a forearm putting a dent into the Cubs pitching plans for the double-headers.

https://twitter.com/tonyandracki23/status/1295432488202964992?s=21

And perhaps putting a dent in his arm?

I'll see myself out.

will the sidearm delivery fool people or will it be low-90s batting practice while they don't offer at his slider?

this should be interesting.

baez fouled one off his foot -very- hard.

hope the pad did it's job.  he's staying in, but he is not 100%.

i'm about done with "bases loaded, 0 runs score" innings.

we've been seeing a lot of that lately.

Problem with the losing streaks is guys trying to do too much at the plate. Happ (who wasnt supposed to be in this game but for Souza's late scratch) trying to hit a five run homer and looking just awful instead

So of course Happ hits a dinger in his next at bat. Solo shot but still

Hendricks threw a 90 mph fastball so that's fun

Almora bringing the leather today in center field - also fun

round of applause for the cubs pen, everyone.  woo.  yeah.  woo.

Oh. I forgot Andrew Miller pitches for the Cards - Yippee!!!

So the Cubs are basically on an 11 game losing streak. With a starter making his MLB debut on tap.

Mercy

Need to win too, or else likely to lose series as Flaherty throws on Wednesday

bryant(3rd) / rizzo / baez / schwarber / contreras(DH) / happ / heyward / caratini(C) / kipnis

game 2

Think I've seen all I need to see of Tyson Miller tonite.

2ip 1h 3bb 0k, 2er...and he's done

On the positive side, Cubs will most likely have to pitch only six innings for the nite cap ... and Underwood should get a chance to shake the cobwebs out.

If I had to guess, the Cubs will make a trade for at least one bona fide left handed reliever by the August 31st trade deadline.  Kyle Ryan doesn't appear to have "it" this season.

1 more lefty and 2-3 more righties after that and they got a pen going.

Well well well.  Looks like the Cubs will be throwing at least seven innings tonite after all 🤪

bote was due (about 5-10+ ABs ago)...nice to see him getting chances, better to see him doing something with it.

cubs win!

jeffress save...darvish goes tomorrow.

Feels like they stole a game like a thief in the night. Feels pretty nice, particularly against the Cards

Awesome win!

This bullpen is such a crapshoot. Other than Jeffress, it's been rocky with everyone. Tepera, Underwood, and Winkler were good tonight. But they're never guaranteed. I am really hoping Duane can start putting it together more consistently. When he's like he was tonight, he's got all he needs to be a high leverage guy.

happ / rizzo / baez / schwarber / contreras(DH) / heyward / bote / caratini / kipnis

bryant recieved some kind of injection treatment (maybe cortisone) on his left wrist today...the one he fell on last week.

souza to the 10d IL (right hamstring) and hernan perez is called up to challenge josh phegley for the batting title.

b.wieck goes from 10d to 45d IL...won't see him until mid/late september at the earliest

Phegley AND Perez?? It's almost unfair.

Also, Wieck to the 45 day IL really further makes it a head scratcher that they didn't do that when they selected Adam instead of designating Cotton, as AZ Phil mentioned.

Things have not ended well when Mills hits a batter. 3 run homer allowed in last game and a grand slam in this one.

d.ross doesn't exactly have a short leash, it seems.

cubs lose...but phegley HR, so that's almost good as a win.

game 2 in 45-ish minutes.

SEA DFA'd vogelbomb.

doubt he's a cubs target.

Superb outing by Alzolay - should have a two run lead but for Rizzo taking his eye off a throw from Bote (can't believe they tagged Bote with the error)

Miles of difference between Alzolay and Miller. Miller more BOR prospect, and Alzolay took his lumps at MLB level last year. Here's hoping he keeps that up and Miller learns from this year

Miller = Mills?

Alzolay definitely should get another start. More hopeful about Alzolay being a difference maker this season than Quintana at this stage of Q's career.

Ah yeah that was confusing. I was referring to Tyson Miller.

And agreed on Alzolay vs Q

Oof. My bad. I'd washed Tyson Miller's two innings out of my mind pronto - definitely a BOR prospect.

kimbrel vs a 2 run lead.  it would be nice to have our zillion dollar closer back in closing duty.

phew.

1ip 0h 0bb 3k, 1 HBP

he lost it for a bit after the HBP, but picked it up.  he threw a lot more offspeed stuff after starting out with 98mph heat.  he's probably not "the" closer, but he's made a claim to be back in the mix.

He looked filthy - located the fastball up and down - couple at 99

Whatever they've done appears to be working

t.bauer was warned he would be suspended if he wore his custom "free joe kelly" shoes, and now he's got a no-hitter into the 5th a few minutes after thom brennaman pretty much got fired mid-game for using a homophobic slur on a hot mic earlier in the game.

hell of a night for CIN.

And called a Castellanos homerun mid apology to boot

sends sound: *confused face*

t.hatch has thrown 11.2ip of 2.31era 0.86whip ball for TOR so far in 2020 (mostly in relief)...he was given up for 17 innings of david phelps.

We also got Phelps into enough games to trigger a few of his incentives.

Its almost like they have no clue how to scout and develop their own system. Hopefully the new regime in that department can do better.

It occured to me watching the Cardinals having MLB debut after debut that in the Theo era we've seen I think 6 draftees/ first contract international FAs debut with the Cubs. Underwood, Norwood, Alzolay, T. Miller, Pierce Johnson, and Zastryzny. Not a single established big leaguer.

Mets player positive for CV, also one staffer.

Mets-Marlins tonight is canceled.

Mets-Yankees tomorrow is canceled.

Now entire Mets-Yankees weekend series is postponed. Had to expect this.

san diego padres has changed their twitter name to "slam diego padres" after hitting 4 grand slams in 4 straight games.

Dillon Maples does not have the right to elect free-agency if he is outrighted to the minors, but he will be automatically declared an MLB Rule 9 6YFA at 5 PM Eastern on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series if he is not added back to the 40 in the meantime.

The Cubs will very likely be splitting the AZIL position players into two 14-man squads (like they did last year), with each squad playng in every other-game, and with the other squad having a Camp Day instructional work-out on a back-field when that squad is not playing in a game. There will also be five combined Camp Days during the course of the four weeks for all players from both squads.

DJL: No. Signing a 2022 minor league successor contract would only matter with regard to a player in the Arizona Fall League, because the AFL schedule goes past the date when minor leaguers are declared free-agents.

AZ Instructs ends on October 16th, which is about two or three weeks before minor league free-agency, so the three guys at Cubs Instructs who are eligible to be free-agehts after the World Series (Dakota Chalmers. Nicholas Padilla, and Eury Ramos) do not need to sign successor contracts in order to play in AZIL games.

Sorry to hear about your dad, Charlie. I lost my father almost 2 years ago now, some of my fondest childhood memories are going to Wrigley with him.

All the best wishes to you, sir.

If you had Bote in the '11-'12- '13 Cubs draft dead pool, then you are a winner!

Dakota Chalmers... interesting. He's scheduled to be a MILB FA, correct? Would this be a good sign he has signed a successor deal?

it's never a good time to be in the hospital, but things are extra complicated right now.

hope everything goes well for everyone.

    go cubs

Listening to this in a hospital room because we are blacked out on MLB.tv. I don't know which surprises me more, that the Cubs haven't beaten the Brewers since April or that the Cubs beat the Brewers in April.

I like that the team was absolutely committed to not losing back-to-back games on a walk-off passed ball.

And the funny thing is Rucker was the only Cubs pitcher tonight to post 0 runs allowed in the box score. You know things are really out of hand when Ross gives the okay for a Maples appearance.

    AZ Phil,

Is there a reason Preciado hasn't been in an ACL game in about a month?

  • crunch 3 days 7 hours ago (view)

i'd like the 2021 version of whatever d.ross is smoking bringing m.rucker into a bases loaded, 2 run lead in the 4th situation.

dude saw the situation and said "gimmie that guy with the 8.44era 1.59whip" as the first pen option to protect a lead.

rucker has been in 13 games and given up runs in 8 of them.
