Murphy is a Cub. Holy shit. Please baseball gods, may he not be Jeff Blauser for Cubs. Please!

The Cubs could place Russell on the 10-day DL and then reinstate him on 9/1 even if he isn't 100% at the plate. He can play defense with no problem even if his left middle-finger doesn't get any better. It's just his hitting that's affected by finger problem.

Also, the Cubs have Mike Freeman (who is a legit SS) at AAA and they can call him up if anything happens to Baez prior to 9/1. (The Cubs called-up Freeman last year under somewhat similar circumstances).

And while he is below-average at the position, David Bote was a SS in HS, JC, and in his first couple of seasons in pro ball, so he does know the mechanics of the position and therefore he can certainly play there in a pinch.

A player acquired in a trade or waiver claim has 72 hours to report. In the meantime he is "reserved," meaning Murphy counts against the Cubs MLB 40-man roster (which is now full), but he does not count against the 25-man roster until he reports and is in uniform. So the Cubs do not have to make a 25-man roster move until Murphy reports.

Hard to say if he would be like Blauser.  Blauser was coming off his career year but he had a pretty good career overall prior to signing with the Cubs at 32 years of age and seemed to be on an upswing.  Murphy has been better offensively over his career but he is 33 this year and could be beginning to break down, looking at his injury history this year.  Murphy is a free agent after this year, so this is a low risk move.

Bote has maybe 30-35 games at SS in the minors. So, he can do it and has the arm. But he's no Javy. Regardless, there will be a slight downtick in D during this period I think.

Can we assume this means Bryant is done for the season, or at least unlikely to return.

Man, just last week while at the Bote game, Murphy beats the shift by perfectly stroking a double down the 3rd base line. I said to my friend, "Shit, he is such a professional hitter..."

"IF" he can rub off on these underperforming lineup guys, how good a trade can this be?

Even if it doesn't rub off, just having one guy in the lineup besides Rizzo who looks like he knows what he's doing, like he can win a battle with the pitcher.

In 2016, the Cubs had a few veterans in the lineup: Zobrist, but also Fowler and the two catchers. They didn't score one run five games in a row.

"Yu Darvish is done for the season after an MRI showed a stress reaction on the tip of his right elbow and a strain in his right triceps."

Almora 8 Heyward 9 Baez 6 Rizzo 3 Zobrist 4 Schwarber 7 Bote 5 Contreras 2 La Stella DH

Lineup with Murphy:

Murphy 2B, Zobrist RF, Rizzo 1B, Baez SS, Schwarber LF, Happ/Bote 3B, Heyward CF, Pitcher, Contreras C

Actually too much swing and miss at 4-6 in the lineup. Could see Murphy in the middle, keeping a contact bat with pop there.

Is there any remote evidence whatsoever that batting the pitcher 8th is helping the Cubs in this stretch?  I get the theory behind it, but there is zero sign it is adding any runs or doing anything to improve the team offense.

when the data showed it was working out slightly worse it was still somehow defended with "well, it doesn't effect it negatively enough to matter."

so yeah, worse doesn't count as worse as long as it's a tiny amount of worse so just keep on doing it.

we're talking about 30-40 extra PA a season for the entire slot...so chances are we'll never see a huge difference on many fronts.

my main pet peve is when you construct a lineup like that and handicap a strong bat in the 7 slot to being pitched around to get to the 8 slot in higher leverage situations.  in most lineups the "wow, cool extra leadoff man" guy in the 9 slot is the cruddiest hitter in the lineup that's not the pitcher and he's probably not going to put up "extra leadoff man" numbers to help the 1/2/3 hitters.

One thing I've noticed in this offense implosion, the Cubs are swinging at virtually every 2-0 pitch...without regard to where the pitch actually is.  2-0 count is a great hitters count, but the entire point is you swing at YOUR perfect pitch.  If it is not perfect, or you don't know what pitch it is, you simply don't swing.  Worst outcome with not swinging is a 2-1 count.

Combined runs by the Cubs in the first 5 innings in the last 11 games, starting with today:

0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 7, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0

10 of 11 games with 1 run or less in innings 1-5.  Basically, we are getting absolutely dominated by one starting pitcher after the next.  Amazingly, Cubs won 4 of the 9 games so far where they've scored 1 or less through 5.

Could use a little TLS catcher interference magic ...

TLS at dh not meant to be with two Ks <Happ nods approvingly>

So what is the MLB record for most consecutive games scoring a single run via a solo shot?  Cubs possibly in record setting mode - Exciting!

My lineup tomorrow: Murphy, Zobrist, Javy, Murphy, Zobrist, Murphy, Javy, Pitcher, Zobrist

It will be interesting to see if they’ll be able to hold on in 2018.

Hey, at least we're witnessing history.

They're not even generating scoring chances.  They get one guy on base per inning.

Yes and no.  0-24 with RISP last 5.5 games...so they are getting a handful of chances each game, just doing nothing with it.

Everyone is trying to be the hero and swinging for 500 foot home runs, even with 2 strikes.  Shorten up and get the damn ball in play and move runners around.

MIL micromanging the top 9th...

t.williams gets 2 easy outs then they go to d.jennings...1 pitch, 1 HR, out of game.

CIN leads by 1.

c.knebel comes in...single...triple...

CIN leads by 2.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
