Cubs @ Reds: Lackey vs Bailey (Game 124)

CHC (66-57): RHP John Lackey (10-9, 4.67)
CIN (53–72): RHP Homer Bailey (4-6, 8.44)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

This is a repeat of last week’s matchup. Lackey limited the Reds to one run over 6 innings but came away with a no-decision and ended his five-game winning streak. The Cubs would go on to win 7-6, when Baez scored on Wood’s wild pitch.

Lackey is 1-1 with a 4.67 in his three starts against the Reds this season, Overall, they are 60-206 (.291). Cozart (7-20, 2 HR), Gennett (10-27, HR), Hamilton (11-31), and Votto (8-27, 2 HR) all hit him well.

For his part, Bailey gave up 6 ER in 5.2 innings, striking out 10 and walking 1. The Cubs are 25-86 (.291) against him. Rizzo is 8-21 with 2 HR, and Jay is 9-30 with a HR.

It’s Montgomery (3-6), in for Lester, and Wojciechowski (3-2) tomorrow at the same time to continue the series.

Go Cubs!

Not sure I saw this news posted here but sadly TJS for Justin Steele:

zobrist scratched from the lineup...because he couldn't get a rental car in nashville, tn to get to the game... yes, that is the real given reason. happ at 2nd.

here's the novelty jersey names for the cubs. not surprisingly, lester still hasn't found a sense of wonder, whimsy, or humor. la stella also calls the cops on your party 1 minute after the noise violation period kicks in.

Hate the hats, like the jerseys. Don't like being down early to Cincy.

At least one shirt is missing here--Grimm's. I saw it on a tee-shirt site. REAPER, I think it was. The nickname is cool. Only problem is you're wearing Grimm's number.

Really wish replay was only used for legit close plays that it was intended for. Not neighborhood calls or guys popping an inch off the bag after a slide.

It's August 22nd and Jason Heyward has 10 doubles on the season. With juiced baseballs. That is all.

maybe they'll rework his swing in the offseason. hahaha sigh.

cubs tie! ...and happ is out at home on one of the worst cubs runner sends in years. but hey, tie.

Yup. I'm all in favor of being aggressive with 2 outs. But that was absurd.

Like the small ball inning though. Sac Fly RBI Ground Out Two Out RBI Cubs haven't done that much this year...let alone in one inning.

Why is WGN doing a Ford "Drive of the Game" in the 5th inning? For a Cincy Home Run???

When's the last time a starter for the Cubs went 7.0IP+?

lackey should be straight up traded for a big bag of dildos.

Brutal pitch.

you know it's bad when schwarber doesn't move or look behind him as it sails over the fence.

Lackey was one pitch away from an effect outing. It's a shame Javy didn't get a chance to bat with the bases loaded - conceivable the Cubs could still have the lead even after giving up the three run bomb

2 outs....2 strikes....seems to be when all the bad stuff happens. Bummer.

There has to be a stat on this...but seems like the Cubs have been demolished in two strike counts this year.

El Mago, baby. El Mago translates to "making shit happen" - mostly in a good way

Hope Lackey didn't throw a fit about coming out of this game....

Imagine if this Reds offense had even a decent pitching staff behind them.

Votto is such a smart hitter. When he gets down 0-2, he realizes he won't see a strike for at least 2 pitches, so he doesn't chase. I hope Javy and Happ were watching that. Then, at 3-2, he got the benefit of the doubt because he's Joey Votto.

Aaron Brooks claimed by Brewers...

I remember watching Nomar Garciaparra when he debuted with Boston and thinking at the time how jarring it was that the guy would adjust his batting gloves between every pitch. Now a guy is unusual if he doesn't. Also, due to absence of Cubs, I watched a few innings of Pirates-Dodgers last night and was again reminded that Pedro Baez is the worst thing to happen to baseball since the color barrier. Hence: Me = Team Pitch Clock

And that's why you don't send Happ, Gary Jones - El Mago!!!

Hell, even Zobrist going extra bases!

Interesting game.

Glad he got a rental car.

was he even in the park for game start?

That's the hardest-hit ball I have seen from Zobrist in a long time. Attaboy!!

That at bat by Baez shows what amazing potential he has. Swung at two pitches that weren't anywhere close to the plate. Almost chased a 3rd about a foot low and outside. Then was patient to get the count in his order, then solid contact right in the zone and didn't try to do too much with it.

Good news: Cubs up 8-6 Bad news: 3 more innings of Cubs bullpen

glorious reds collapse. "damn, not much has been worse than our pen lately." - cubs pen "hold my beer." - reds pen

3 walks, 3 hits, 4 runs in, men and 2nd/3rd, 0 out...and scrubby mcscrubs is still on the mound pitching. it must be fun being a reds fan.

So does Wilson pitch the ninth in the hopes of "getting right"?

7 runs isn't enough of a lead to risk it.

Rizzo pulling a Don Mattingly and playing third base in the ninth. Hopefully KB removed for just precautionary reasons and his wrist is okay.

KB with a contusion - X-rays negative

bryant xrays negative (left upper hand/lower wrist) day to day...and may be fine to go tomorrow.

i can't believe this kind of stuff is what we're talking about 2 months into the 2020 season...i can't believe a lot of stuff about 2020 outside of the game, too.

contract rights are retained by the team.

in normal times this keeps labor relations between employer and player not too volitile with only a handful of player/owner issues.  in times like this you see a system that was not designed for an event like this.

some owners are being responsible over the players who's contracts they control while other owners make us realize why the guillotine was occsasionally popular during revoltutions/revolts.

So they are all free agents?  Or still under contract and not getting paid?  I'm sure AZ Phil or someone else has covered this but I haven't been keeping up with all the fine points of baseball's problems recently.

Manfred is such a dreadful commissioner. It's his job to walk a fine line and maintain peace in labor relations. Instead he lets the owners do whatever they want.

Cannot wait for a long, bitter strike after 2021. And for the owners to ultimately turn plenty of fan sentiment against players.

"The A's told their minor leaguers Tuesday that they will not continue to pay them their current salary of $400 per week beyond May 31."

classy.  absolute class act stuff right there.

    Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich
The MLBPA is very disappointed with MLB’s economic proposal today, source tells me and @Ken_Rosenthal, calling additional cuts proposed “massive." League offered to share more playoff revenue, but on balance, those dollars are small compared to what players give up, PA believes.

A's are furloughing nearly all of their staff through the entire organization...including scouts, which make a shockingly low amount of money.

the A's are owned by a multi-billionaire who inherited his loot from dad (founder of The Gap)...and him + family spent $10m trying to keep Obama from getting a 2nd term, which i assume is their idea of a good investment in their community...whereas paying loyal employees for years/decades for a few months is...well...*shrug*

That was the dumbest lineup I've ever seen.

Cubster, your comments about President Bone Spurs could not be more accurate. Thanks for posting!

Cubster: I agree with your comments, save one. That the president is "leading" America. He couldn't lead a pack of rats to a NYC dumpster on an August afternoon. The "man" is a f'ing disgrace.

though the team cheaped out on this offseason (still an overall top-tier payroll), i was at least looking forward to seeing the beginning of the david ross era...and who was going to win the 2nd base job...

nothing about 2020 baseball feels legit anymore.  just hearing the players talk about it, you'd think they were organizing a casual pickup game for charity at an inconvient time and place...doesn't seem like they're really stoked about it.

June 1st is a week from tomorrow. Given 5 weeks of spring training before starting (July 4th?), the season is on the brink of going bye-bye. It's bad enough in 2020 to be losing prime career years for Javy Baez and Kris Bryant, let alone Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, Kyle Hendricks, and Willson Contreras. If one of them gets coronavirus, loses lung capacity, and alters their career arc, Cub fans will for a long time have a bitter taste in their mouths. All for, at best,  a bizarre half-season without fans watching in the ballparks.
