Comments

Neither the Cards or Brewers appear inclined to drop out of the race. Cards winning their ninth straight road game and Brewers winning in 15 innings after trailing the Pirates by two runs in the 15th with two outs and a relief pitcher batting. Painful week for bucco fans.

Players weekend revelation: Rich Hill with the "D. Mountain" jersey. Nicknamed Dick Mountain while with the Red Sox - who knew?

"Kris Bryant (shoulder) will begin his minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on Monday."

he should be back with the big league club by mid-late week...probably only need 2-3 games to get right.

Q isn't trash, but the cubs gave up one of the best OF prospects in all of baseball + a good minor league starter prospect with a 100mph fastball to get him.

meh.

he's not supposed to be an ace, but he's supposed to be be damn close to one...a solid 2 or extrodinary 3 slot guy.  part of his cost is also the cheap $$ for years involved.  hopefully he pulls it together soon, or at least next season going forward.

Maybe it wasn't the HR Derby, maybe it was:

Schwarber pre-AS: .873 OPS.  Post-AS: .642.

I realize others (Harper) have done better post-Derby, but Schwarber is performing worse than he was last year when he got sent down.  C'mon Kyle -- figure it out, dude.

EDIT: Attaboy!!!!

first la stella xbase hit since a double on july 20th (42 PA).

9 singles and 5bb (.366 ob%) in that stretch.

...and heyward ends the inning with the bases loaded...sigh.  at least the cubs shouldn't need those runs (8 run lead going into the 8th).

8 left on base for him today...0-4, 1bb

he's been really horrible the past 30+ days (sub-.300 ob% and slugging)...even mostly playing as a platoon player under favorable matchups.

I thought Kintzler was a ground ball inducing machine - guess I was mistaken. Yuck

*shrug*

he had good success with his arms in HOU + TB, though it could be argued some guys in the TB coaching pipeline like neil allen (AA/AAA TB coach for a stretch) did a lot to turn pitchers into pros before they got to TB.  that said, neil allen didn't do a great job when he finally got to the bigs with MIN (the drinking didn't help).  it's such a crapshoot when evaluating coaching talent...even harder when the game/era changes or evolves new strategies.

there's very few actual chosen ones out there...mike maddux is a hell of a coach currently involved in the game with success on multiple teams/projects, though.  dave spaghetti, mel stottlemyre, leo mazzone, and dave duncan had mad success and have a lot positive feedback from pitchers they worked with.

there's been a lot of coaches over the years with the cubs and i've enjoyed having some around, but i've never felt like any were must-have hitting/pitching/etc coaches to keep the organization stable or competitive in my lifetime.

I will say, the Cubs seem to have a fairly high rate of double plays turned right after Hickey mound visits.

I think Quintana is just pitching at less than 100%. His velocity is down and he just doesn’t have the command to compensate for it. At this point you just hope it comes back (sometimes it does, especially if he’s got some sort of nagging undisclosed injury).

Re: Mound Visits -- I remember Bosio going out to talk to Hendricks in Game 5 against the Nats.  For some reason, he convinced Hendircks to throw a high fastball to Michael Taylor, who blasted it for a 3-run HR.  Kyle was not happy, and I remember thinking the season was over.

I think it was more a matter of Joe Maddon wanting the guy he worked with for a number of years in TB as his pitching coach than it was Hickey being some sort of miracle worker. Same thing with Dave Martinez when he was Cubs bench coach. It wasn't that he was necessarily anything special, it was just that Maddon felt comfortable working with him.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
