Phenom update:  Since the A/S break:

Gleybar Torres: .215 BA, .303 OBP, .649 OPS

Baseball continues to be hard.

When reporting the story of Murphy's "gay lifestyle" comments, the media should distinguish between Billy Bean (who nobody had heard of before this) and Billy Beane (who was played by Brad Pitt in a major movie and everybody knows).  In addition to the name similarity, they both were highly-touted OF prospects from California who never had much success at the MLB level.  I consider myself pretty up on baseball stuff, and I wasn't sure if there were two Billys or one.

In case nobody noticed, Javy has been a beast since mid-June.  .337/.372/.623/.995 since June 11 with 14 HR and 51 RBI.  Woo.

Murphy 2B, Baez SS, Rizzo 1B, Zobrist RF, Heyward CF, Contreras C, Schwarber LF, Lester P, Bote 3B

also, j.bautista is going to PHI in trade from NYM so there's that.

Plan for tonight is to hold 'em close and get into the Mets' pen.  Unfortunately, it's not good Lester weather -- hot with the wind blowing out pretty good.

Lester may not pitch well in the heat, but he can at least hit in it. Big two out, bases loaded single there.

lester pickoff throw to 1st!

like...one that was in the air...and got to the 1st baseman's glove...and got an out.  neat.

a few more of those and maybe people will quit taking 20+ foot leads off him.

mess of a 9th, but no runs scored and the cubs win.

cubs gain a 1/2 game on MIL + STL (not playing tonight).

Two extra scoops of ice cream for whoever scouted Chavez.  That was a total "whaaaa?" trade, and he's been awesome.

iowa...

bryant goes 0-3 with a walk

chatwood 4.1ip 3h 5bb 3k, 2r/er...77 pitches

also, corn.

They rework his mechanics over the winter or he becomes Theo's Carl Crawford of Chicago.  Get the knife and fork to eat some contract.

Not sure I would go that far. There is a 4 year and $100+mil gap between the Chatwalk and Carl Crawford deals and that doesn't even account for salary inflation. J-Hey would be the closer comp in terms of size/length of contract. Just trade the human charity walkathon to the A's. Sure he will develop into a decent pitcher along with former Cubs, E-Jax, Cahill and Brett Anderson.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
