Hamels and deGrom go tomorrow at the same time.
Go Cubs!

Phenom update:  Since the A/S break:

Gleybar Torres: .215 BA, .303 OBP, .649 OPS

Baseball continues to be hard.

So of course Gleyber hits HR #20 tonight

no STL or MIL today...

When reporting the story of Murphy's "gay lifestyle" comments, the media should distinguish between Billy Bean (who nobody had heard of before this) and Billy Beane (who was played by Brad Pitt in a major movie and everybody knows).  In addition to the name similarity, they both were highly-touted OF prospects from California who never had much success at the MLB level.  I consider myself pretty up on baseball stuff, and I wasn't sure if there were two Billys or one.

i am far from a fan of murphy's comments and point of view, but at various points the past few years he's made it clear he hopes everyone who comes to the park or plays the game feels welcome and included.  that's probably the best you can get out of a guy with his views.

In case nobody noticed, Javy has been a beast since mid-June.  .337/.372/.623/.995 since June 11 with 14 HR and 51 RBI.  Woo.

We noticed.

And still raking despite the home run derby - I slipped his brother a $20 to ensure he didn't make it out of the first round - paying dividends!

Murphy 2B, Baez SS, Rizzo 1B, Zobrist RF, Heyward CF, Contreras C, Schwarber LF, Lester P, Bote 3B

also, j.bautista is going to PHI in trade from NYM so there's that.

He' been claimed. It's Matt Harvey redux.

What makes it unlikely today is Jeff McNeil (2B) has a sore quad, and Reyes has to play. They also have a catcher (Plawecki) a few rapid contractions from paternity leave.

Plan for tonight is to hold 'em close and get into the Mets' pen.  Unfortunately, it's not good Lester weather -- hot with the wind blowing out pretty good.

Slow-mo of KB's new follow thru:

Doesn't look turrible - he may be able to pass the audition

KB with a deep fly out to right field on an 0-2 pitch in his first AB

"i'd like one large order of stupid cubs baserunning, please." - me

"i got you, fam." - baez

The "nice" thing is you just knew Rizzo would get a hit right after the foolish out

Four consecutive hits off Thor - what could possibly go wrong?

wtf lester...

I'm going with the wilts in hot weather theory

top 2nd, bases loaded, and the pen is warming.

da fuq...

Lester may not pitch well in the heat, but he can at least hit in it. Big two out, bases loaded single there.

lester pickoff throw to 1st! that was in the air...and got to the 1st baseman's glove...and got an out.  neat.

a few more of those and maybe people will quit taking 20+ foot leads off him.

Quality outing by Lester after the hiccup second inning - shuts them down the next four inning (including the nifty pickoff) and hits a two run single.

...and that gets screwed on the 1st pitch of the 7th inning...awesome job cishek.

tie game.

Given that this is Cishek's 261st appearance this year I'll cut him some slack - this time!

safe to say rizzo's warmed back up.

I heard several "media" on-air people stating Riz is now in decline, getting older, getting worse...

They don't get it.

mess of a 9th, but no runs scored and the cubs win.

cubs gain a 1/2 game on MIL + STL (not playing tonight).

Two extra scoops of ice cream for whoever scouted Chavez.  That was a total "whaaaa?" trade, and he's been awesome.

He's no Kintzler, but he'll do nevertheless

Pretty nice getting that additional half win up on Brewcrew and Cards with deGrom up next

Gameball to Lester and Murphy setting the offensive tone early yet again

Chavez as a Cub: 26K, 2BB.  My goodness.

bryant goes 0-3 with a walk

chatwood 4.1ip 3h 5bb 3k, 2r/er...77 pitches

also, corn.

They rework his mechanics over the winter or he becomes Theo's Carl Crawford of Chicago.  Get the knife and fork to eat some contract.

Not sure I would go that far. There is a 4 year and $100+mil gap between the Chatwalk and Carl Crawford deals and that doesn't even account for salary inflation. J-Hey would be the closer comp in terms of size/length of contract. Just trade the human charity walkathon to the A's. Sure he will develop into a decent pitcher along with former Cubs, E-Jax, Cahill and Brett Anderson.

Sorry, that didn't post and I can't edit. Weird. Never had that happen before.

Chatwood - I marvel at his consistency.

"Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Scott Kazmir will throw for MLB teams this week.

The 36-year-old Kazmir hasn't thrown in the majors since the 2016 season, but he recently told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that he that he hit 90.9 mph with his fastball during a bullpen session."

someone put another bottle of left-in-the-car warm water under the cubs hot stove and let's get this one done!  woo!

bryce harper ruined that bat dragging thing for everyone after his ejection years ago at the junior college world series.

also, hurrah for baseball making it's return.

College ball started Saturday.  Umpire egos in D1 baseball are not that much smaller than in the pros, so of course there was a controversy.  In the late innings of a game in the weekend's biggest series (Michigan vs.

the news is mostly based on a Baseball America article from the 11th (behind a paywall) the gist of it is rather legit rumor-wise, though it's still too far in the future to call it a 100% done deal.

btw, the cubs have been strongly linked to pursuing christian hernandez for quite a while.  the BA writer that wrote the article about the cubs links has been following c.hernandez since he was a 14yo talent and is quite familiar with him.  that signing probably is in the bag.

I don't know much about this website, but they are speculating that the Cubs may sign two of the top International Free Agents available during this signing period: Does anyone know if this sounds legit?

Minnie Minoso was playing in the Mexican League (as a DH) at age 47 and Julio Franco was playing in the Mexican League (as a DH) at age 49, so Mexican League teams clearly do not have a problem with signing older players.

And of course the ageless Satchel Paige was still working as a SP in AAA (with the Miami Marlins) into his early 50's (and prior to that he pitched in MLB as late as age 46).

b.colon has signed to a mexican league team.  woo old dudes.  he turns 47 in may...believed by some to be older.

Increasing levels of smoke concerning a possible Arenado/KB trade

Get Arenado to agree to push back his opt out a few years or so down the road and this could work out nicely for the Cubs

Jason Kipnis (like Brandon Morrow) was a post-2019 Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signed a 2020 minor league contract, so he gets a $100K retention bonus and an automatic June 1st player opt-out if he is not released by 12 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day prior to MLB Opening Day or added to an MLB 40-man roster or MLB 60-day IL by 12 PM (Eastern) on MLB Opening Day.

The Cubs have signed post-2019 second-contract minor league FA catcher Jordan Procyshen to a 2020 minor league contract and he has been assigned to AA Tennessee.

darvish, lester, and mills could combine to give up 100 homers between the 3 of them.

I would have liked to give him a shot. I don't see much more out of a Chatwood and Alec Mills competition for the 5th spot.
