Cubs @ Pirates: Series Thread (Games 35-37)

The Cubs escape Cincinnati with a 2-2 split and head to Pittsburgh to try to catch a cheap ride on the NL central's caboose. Things have not gone well for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who enter the series at 10-22. Game 1, Tuesday, Sep. 1, 6:05 pm central CHC: LHP Jon Lester (2-1, 4.55 ERA) PIT: RHP Chad Kuhl (1-1, 2.52 ERA) Game 2, Wednesday, Sep. 2, 6:05 pm central CHC: Kyle Hendricks (3-4, 4.09 ERA) PIT: Derek Holland (1-2, 7.62 ERA) Game 3, Thursday, Sep. 3, 12:35 pm central CHC: RHP Yu Darvish (6-1, 1.47 ERA) PIT: RHP JT Brubaker (0-0, 4.50 ERA)

If KB is activated and starting, I think it gives Ross an opportunity to reshuffle the lineup:

Happ, KB, Rizzo, Schwarber, Javy (or Willson), JHey, Willson (or Javy), DH (Bote, Martinez, Caratini), 2B (Nico, Kipnis, Bote)

Time spent on the 10-day IL prior to being traded counts toward the minimum ten days a player must spend on the 10-day IL if he is not ready to be reinstated after being traded, so if Andrew Chafin is transferred to the Cubs 10-day IL and is not reinstated today he can be reinstated at any time (tomorrow, Thursday, whenever) because he already has spent 13 days on the D'backs 10-day IL.

ERIC S: The Cubs apparently didn't see the Casey Sadler DFA coming, either, since they could have DFA'd him yesterday instead of Ian Miller.

This does mean that the Cubs now have one slot open on the 40, so they could make a waiver claim later this week (more than a dozen players have been Designated for Assignment over the past couple of days) and option the player to the ATS if they find somebody they like and he has a minor league option left.

Lineup:  Happ, KB, Rizzo, Javy, Schwarber, Willson, JHey, Martinez (DH), Kipnis

Let's face it: Cubs aren't doing much of anything in October if Javy, KB and Willson aren't hitting much better than they are so far this year (no matter where they are in the order) - keep the faith and hope things turn around soon

If Happ hit league average with the bases loaded I think he'd be a legit MVP candidate this weird season

Javy is at his best when he punishes hanging breaking balls. A hair too fast on one which barely went foul to left field and snapped a double to left on one his next at bat - those are encouraging signs

Big Jon getting worked over by the Pirates not great.

If he can get thru a batting order two times, may be time to cash the chips

f'n tie game...sigh.

restart game...give up a leadoff homer...now it's raining harder than it was during the delay.  great job.

2 men on for PIT in the bottom 9th with 1 out and it's osich time?  a'ite then.

Pedro Strop released. Wondering if Theo and co decide to kick the tires there.

Q back on that IL...10 day, "left lat inflamation"

jason adam is back up.  meh.

looks like alzolay is a lock for more starts.

Intrigued to see what Adbert can do.

For now, I don't know why it's Jason Adam up again, even for a few days? Feel like we all got enough of a feel for him. Decent offspeed that everyone lays off waiting for that flat fastball that he doesn't locate nearly well enough to sustain a sub 4 ERA.

Yup, saw that on your page! That's kinda why I think he gets non-tendered and was hoping he would get one last look this season instead of Adam. I think Adam has less talent, but he also has an option remaining next year in case the Cubs want to give him a shot next year.

So that means instead of just calling up Adbert Alzolay as the "29th man" to start game #2 of the doubleheader on Saturday (with Quintana pitching Game #1), the Cubs will likely call-up Tyson Miller to start either the first or second game (TBD) with Alzolay starting the other one. Since a club cannot switch the 29th man between games, Alzolay (and not T. Miller) will almost certainly be designated the "29th man," because the 29th man is exempt from the minimum 10-day option rule.

And so if T. Miller is recalled on Saturday he would have to replace another player on the MLB 28-man Active List roster (probably Jason Adam) either before or after game #1 (depending on which game T. Miller starts), and then T. Miller would be optioned back to the minors after that game and would be replaced on the 28-man roster by another (different) player (can't be Adam because he has to remain on optional assignment for at least ten days) either before the second game of the doubleheader (if T. Miller starts game #1) or for Sunday's game (if T. Miller starts game #2). Perhaps it could be recently-acquired LHRP Andrew Chafin (if he is ready to be reinstated from the IL).

Then a 5th starter won't be needed again until Thursday 9/10 (and that could either be Chatwood, Quintana, or Alzolay, depending on whether Chatwood and/or Quintana are ready to pitch, and it can be Alzolay because as the 29th man on Saturday he would be exempt from the minimum 10-day option rule). And a 5th starter wouldn't be needed again after that for another twelve days (Tuesday 9/22) and then again on Sunday 9/27 (the last day of the MLB regular season, and hopefully by that time it won't matter because the Cubs will have already qualified for the playoffs).

happ / contreras / rizzo / baez / souza(LF) / martinez(DH) / maybin(RF) / bote(3rd) / hoerner

game 2

Glad the Professor is working out the kinks now before he goes on to dominate the month of October - along with Yu of course

That sixth inning was a grind to watch on both ends of it. Surprised Adam inserted into a two run deficit game - lead off walk and a flubbed throw to second on a potential double play eventually lead to two runs scoring on a bloop to left field.

I don't care to see Hendricks or Smyly on the 26-man Roster the rest of the season. Both, stupid signings and option pick up by Jed.

i know the cubs are paying the guys, but for the sake of the win/loss column this is some great news.

woo!  people getting injured!  kick ass!

    sportsball is cruel.

would have liked to keep cooper, but it looks like they're gonna go with wisdom if they have to pick a righty who's gonna K 1/3rd of his PA's.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Edwards would be my guess, or maybe they’re hoping Sanders or R Thompson can finally figure it out

  • Cubster (view)

So it’s Mervis, Wesn and Little for Cooper, Hendricks and Smyly. Count me in. Starting rotation for now: Taillon, Imanaga, Wicks, Assad and Brown-Wesn. Eventually Steele.

    Lineup

Hoerner, Happ, Bellinger, Busch, Morel, Swanson, Tauchman, Mervis, Amaya.

Another year AZPhil, and you have more to do than ever! Heck yeah! Great stuff from Rosario so far. What are your impressions of guys like Freilyn Silverio, Adan Sanchez, Jose Escobar, and Anderson Suriel? Particularly the first two, feel like I’m forgetting one.

  • fullykräusened (view)

My first thought was that Hendricks was IL'd with a broken ERA, but after some quick research, you're right about MLB making at least some effort to discourage the "phantom IL."

luke little rejoins the MLB party...

  • crunch (view)

    hendricks IL...lower back...

given recent backlash by MLB, i doubt this is a phanton IL.

wtf...also drew smyly to IL...right hip...

  • crunch (view)

boston, houston, miami...lots of potential suitors for a backup 1st/DH who won't be pain if they need regular ABs

BOS 1B Casas just hit the IL. Maybe Cooper goes there.

Cooper leaving does open a 40man spot. Probably for an arm at some point.

    Horton?

    Maybe Caissie
