Mets @ Cubs: Gsellman vs Quintana (Game 144)

NYM (63-80): RHP Robert Gsellman (6-6, 5.44)
CHC (77-66): LHP José Quintana (9-11, 4.32)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Quintana went 6 innings of scoreless baseball on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, but he ended up with a no-decision because he didn’t also hit a two-run homer.

Overall, the Mets are 24-70 (.343) against him, but most of that is the DLing Cespedes (10-18, 4 HR—dang!). Aoki is 7-17.

Gsellman beat the Phillies (6 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) his last time out. All but three of his 21 appearances this season have been as a starter. He’s 2-3 with a 7.44 on the road in 2017. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Harvey (5-4) and Lester (10-7) continue the series tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

This is really, really starting to feel like 2004. Every hitter looks tight, and nobody can get a hit with men on base.

I'm fully feeling a sense of impending doom about this season. Meanwhile Cards are doing what the Cubs and Brewers failed to do in long stretches against bad teams. They are dominating teams at the bottom of the standings.

My sense of impending doom would be a lot less intense if I read fewer of the comments here. *le sigh* People have noted this season that the Brewers are "playing with house money" having already far exceeded expectations for their season. Shouldn't we feel that way about the Cubs after the World Series victory? My version of that has been to check out for long stretches this season. I was so engaged in 2015 and 2016 when the team was exciting, the best regular season team across the two seasons, and a played some intense playoff games. Now I feel sort of dismissive when they are on losing streaks and slightly piqued when they are winning. Maybe these last few weeks and then, potentially, playoffs will get me back into it.

Punchless lineup, terrible. How the hell can you justify Zobrist and Heyward in a lineup at the same time?

Zobrist has looked pretty good since the beginning of August. He may have recovered from his nagging injuries in the first half of the season, like he did with KC in 2015. Since August 1, he has slashed .287/.371/.426 and in the last 28 days (not including going 2 for 3 with 3BB and 4 runs scored tonight against the Mets), he has hit .307/.376/.520. I'll put that kind of production in my line-up pretty regularly.

Youngest lineup in baseball. Just give them time and I think they're capable of doing something special.

I as well, like some of you, feel regardless of this years' outcome - they will be rockin' next year provided they stay moderately healthy.

i'm wondering who they're going to slot in between lester and Q. they got the $$ to get it done to whatever scale they want to, so i dunno where to start the expectations for who might be coming. bringing back arrieta, signing cobb, signing otani, trading for someone, etc etc who knows... be interesting to see what arms the pen will get in the offseason, too.

new rule: i dont care how much the wind in the OF is blowing the ball around, let's not sit schwarber for 3 games in a row

Q... 7ip 6h 1bb 7k, 2r/er nice. 2 HBP, though...and his 7th as a cub in 65 innings. he's not a guy known for HBPs.

I like the fact Maddon left him in for 112 pitches through 7. I've felt all year, Maddon has been too quick to go to the bullpen and he's burned them out. So many starts into the 6th. So few starts into the 7th.

Well, Cards are scaring the heck out of me...but still rather be us than them. Very much hope we get the lead up to 3 before they come in town.

For those who partook of the is Kris Bryant a bad defensive 3B discussion: His advanced defensive stats have jumped into the positive side of the win spectrum for some reason recently. Fangraphs now has him 6th among qualified NL 3B in UZR/150 at the position but just 8th in DRS. That's pretty much average-ish. I don't know which plays he's had that have made those advanced stats jump in the last couple of weeks. Still not clutch, though.

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
