Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

Cubs @ Nationals: Montgomery vs Ross (Game 146)

CHC (84-61): LHP Mike Montgomery (4-5, 3.85)
WAS (74-72): RHP Joe Ross (0-0, ---)
First pitch: 7:00pmCST

Montgomery gave up 2 ER in 4 innings and lost in Milwaukee last Tuesday. He had a scoreless inning of relief against the Nats on August 11. Overall, they are 3-10 against him. Harper, Hendrick, and Wieters have the hits.

Ross’s return from Tommy John surgery was washed out on September 7. The Cubs are 11-46 (.239) against him. Rizzo is 4-8.

Hamels and Harvey tomorrow back at Wrigley--now at 7:05pmCST, for your jet-lagged pleasure.

Go Cubs!

Rooting for the goddam Dodgers, unreservedly. As for the playoffs, if the Cubs ain't involved, I'd rather watch paint dry than managerial chess.

Edwards really WAS the key to our bullpen.  With him totally off, the whole plan falls apart.  But, the pen wouldn't be an issue if the cubs could hit consistently.  Cubs offense with bad murphy is remarkably similiar to Cubs offense before Murphy.

8 innings pitched for the cubs...8 pitchers used...

strop out for the 9th after 0.2ip of the 8th...

Gutsy Baez.  Not too sure it was smart, but guess we needed a break like that.  More runs please.  Rendon, Soto, Zimmerman up

There is absolutely no way in hell a 3rd inning of Strop with a 1-run lead is better than Rosario with a 2 run lead.  That is absolute insanity...and of course, caused an injury.

I think that was the single worst Maddon decision since the World Series.

Cubs winning today is like the World Series.  Winning covers up horrid managerial decisions.  I love Maddon overall, but sometimes his gut sucks.

Not just the players need a day off.  Only reason Joe made the idiot fucking move to have Strop bat in the 10th was to distract from the idiot fucking move he made in the 8th to pinch hit Contreras for Caratini.  Caratini has had the best ABs by any Cub over the last 10 days and is hitting 417 over the last 7.  And Contreras has been whatever lost is if it married clueless and then had an affair with baffled.

I'm with you.  If Joe doesn't bring CJ into a one-run game (which he unsurprisingly blows) or pinch hit the ice-cold Contreras with bases loaded and one out for the good-swinging Caratini (when he unsurprisingly Ks), the Cubs win before Strop has to hit in the 9th.  Joe does some good things but tonight was just horrible.  He makes so many indefensible in-game decisons -- I never thougth he could top using Lackey in relief in back-to-back games in the NLCS, but tonight may have done it.  Gotta believe Theo is getting sick of this nonsense.

I didn't have any problem with Joe letting Stop hit last night. There weren't any better options available to close it out and he might have longer outings in the postseason.

However, why did Montgomery only go 4 innings? Is his pitch count limited due to the injury he suffered in August?

Contreras is hitting .125 as a PH this year, which exactly matches his career mark as a PH.  Caratini (combining LH and RH) is batting .260 for the year but .462 in the last week.  I can't find what his recent average is RH maybe he's only been the best Cubs hitter recently left handed.  Also my eyes have convinced me that he's had the best ABs of any Cub over the last 5 to 10 games.

Len and JD didn't bat an eye yesterday with the switch, just said Joe probably preferred Contreras RH to Caratini.  I thought Contreras went down meekly.  A harder AB by Caratini and maybe a ball gets away and Cubs score without a hit.

I was explaining all of this to Joe in real time.  All my neighbors can vouch for it.

strop day-to-day with a left hamstring injury.

he's expected to miss a bit of time...more than a day or two of rest.

Forgetting the injury.  What is the most likely outcome for someone who never hits if he puts the ball in play?  A DP.  If you insist on being an idiot and want the guy to pitch the next inning, then send him to the plate with direct instructions not to swing the bat.  Take a K, sit down, and let someone else bat with 2outs.  This was just stupidity all around.

I assume it's Wilson/Chavez in the 9th now, which means CJ needs to pull his head out of his ass, the starters need to throw an extra inning and the offense needs to produce.  KB looking better, and hopefully tonight gets Javy on a roll again.

I think Lester and Rizzo need to grab CJ by the shirt, slam him against a wall and tell him the team needs him, he needs to toughen up and pull his head out of his ass and start pitching like the dominant guy he can be.  Baseball is a funny game -- maybe 2-3 of Cishek, De La Rosa, CJ, Kintzler and Rosario can outpitch their abilities for a couple weeks.  It happens all the time.  Now would be good to be one of those times.

Do the Cubs have any players working out in Mesa in case of more injuries? I am thinking of Webster, Ryan Coghlan, or Underwood?

A lot of chagrin here, but really, the only thing wrong with this team is the number of very talented players who are 25/26 years old, and therefore not consistent. Contreras, Russell, Edwards, etc. When they're making real money (in baseball terms) and have a bunch of kids at home, they'll give you a workmanlike job every day. Meanwhile, we might see bad days or weeks or even seasons. There's nothing to fix. That's a good thing. Stay tuned to find out whether they're going to miss the playoffs or maybe win another WS.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
