Cubs Blue Squad Edges Red Squad at Riverview

Miguel Pabon drilled an RBI double, walked, stole a base, and scored two runs, Anderson Suriel doubled, walked, drove-in two runs, and stole a base, and Rafael Morel doubled and singled and scored two runs, as the Cubs "Blue Squad" eged the Cubs "Red Squad" 6-5 in AZ Instructional League intrasquad game action Tuesday moring on Field # 1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Reggie Preciado belted a two-run HR, singled, stole two bases, and scored two runs, and Cristian Hernandez cracked an RBI double, singled, and score a run for the "Red Squad" in a losing cause.

The game was pre-planned as a six-inning contest.
There were only three pitchers scheduled to throw in the game and they completed their work after only 2-1/2 innings, and because none of the coaches were up to throwing multi-inning BP, a pitching machine was employed to provide baseball fodder for the Cubs batters over the last 3-1/2 innings. The two umpires remained on duty to make calls on the bases and catchers did receive the pitches, but walks, stolen bases, and bunts were not permitted after the top of the third inning.

NOTE: AB outcomes versus pitching machine are highlighted and underlined in purple, and yes, four batters did somehow manage to strike out swinging while facing the pitching machine.

Comments

Phil,

From what you're seeing in Mesa now and from the ACL summer games, how does this group of Instruct guys compare to past groups with regard to tools? Like from 1 to 10 or the 20 to 80 scale? Are they more toolsy than recent, past classes? Speed, power, size, etc.

I get that's a dumb question because all of these guys are rookies and under 21 or 22 yrs old (most being teenagers) so it's all tools, but I was just curious. It seems that most of them have one tool that stands out. Always curious of your opinion of the groups.

Thanks!
