A's Triple-Up Cubs at Fitch Park

Jack Winkler tripled and scored on a GO in the 3rd and Junior Perez tripled and scored on a WP in the 6th, as the Athletics edged the Cubs 3-2 in AZ Instructional League game action Saturday morning on Field #4 at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Christian Franklin (Cubs 2021 4th round draft pick) singled twice, stole a base, and scored a run for the Cubs in a losing cause.

2019 1st round draft pick RHP Ryan Jensen got the start for the Cubs and threw two innings (30 pitches) of shutout ball with four strikeouts, allowing just an infield single. He also committed a balk when he went into a wind-up and then suddenly stopped with a man on first base.

The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning affair. The A's then played a "sim game" on the same field after the conclusion of the AZIL game with the Cubs, because the A's had several more pitchers who needed work. (The Cubs were out of available pitchers).

The Cubs are 1-7-1 through their first nine AZIL games.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Hey AZ Phil, any feedback on Drew Gray? Does he seem like a guy who may compete for a full season rotation job next year?

KKvG: Barring injury, I don't think there is any question that Drew Gray will be in the Myrtle Beach Opening Day starting rotation in 2022, probably with Luke Little, Luis Devers, Tyler Schlaffer, and Porter Hodge, and/or (hopefully) Koen Moreno and Benjamin Rodriguez.

Gray is certainly among the Cubs top ten pitching prospects right now (maybe even top five), in the same group as Brailyn Marquez, D. J. Herz, Jordan Wicks, Caleb Kilian, Ryan Jensen, Kohl Franklin, Riley Thompson, Alexander Vizcaino, and Daniel Palencia.

Agreed, standout combo of athleticism and early pitchability. Thanks. You wouldn't have anything on his stuff since joining the org?

Still not a Richard Gallardo guy? He's my top pitching prospect in the org

KKvG: Gray has been showing a 94-97 FB with high RPMs, a 12/6 dive-bomb CV, and a sweeping CT/SL. He  does have difficulty commanding his stuff sometimes (like today), but when he has command (like he did a couple of outings ago when he struck out eight in just 2.2 IP) he is almost unhittable.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
