Giants @ Cubs: Cueto vs Lester (Game 163; NLDS Game 1)

Cubs 1, Giants 0
W: Lester (1-0); L: Cueto (0-1); S: Chapman (1)
Cubs lead series: 1-0

PREVIEW
SF (0-0): RHP Johnny Cueto (0-0, —-)
CHC (0-0): LHP Jon Lester (0-0, —-)
First pitch: 8:00pmCST

Lester (19-5, 2.44 for the season) lost in Cincinnati on Saturday (5 IP, 5 ER, 6 K, 3 BB). After being so strong down the stretch, it was good to have him get his clunker game out of the way. He was 10-2 with a 1.74 at Wrigley this season and pitched twice against the Giants this year, going 1-1 with a 4.63. For their careers, the Giants are 22-100 (.222) against him. Posey is 5-16 with a HR.

Cueto (18-5, 2.79) beat the Rockies for his fourth straight win on Thursday, giving up 2 ER in 7 innings and striking out 11. He had a no-decision at Wrigley on September 4 (7 IP, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). The Cubs don’t have great numbers against him. Overall, they are 26-141 (.184). The likely line-up is: Fowler (3-16), Bryant (3-5), Rizzo (3-25 with a HR, yikes), Zobrist (0-8), Russell (3-6), Heyward (4-18), Baez (0-6), and Ross (1-4).

In his 16 postseason appearances, Lester is 6-6 with a 2.85 ERA. Cueto has 7 postseason games, going 2-3 with a 5.35, including nine innings of one-run ball in Game Two of last year’s World Series sweep of the Mets.

The Giants had a great first half (57-33), but after the ASG, not so much (30-42). They are certainly not a 103-win team. That’s why Westgate SuperBook has the Cubs (9-5) as the favorites to win the World Series. The Red Sox are next at 9-1. The lowly Giants are the long(er) shots at 12-1.

The Chat will be a hoppin’, but BYOB.

Samardzija (probably) versus Hendricks tomorrow at 7:00pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Almora in, Szczur out. Joe Smith off roster, not a suprise. Hopefully Rondon stops the post-DL suckitude.

I have so much I need to do today but also I just want it to be tonight. I feel like I might be clenching.

Man Queto has been a fucking beast this year. If the Cubs play to potential, and Lester is good Lester, I like our chances. Let's put the kobash on Cubbery for the Playoffs.

full roster

Starting pitchers: LH Jon Lester, RH Kyle Hendricks, RH Jake Arrieta, RH John Lackey. Bullpen: Closer Aroldis Chapman, RH Hector Rondon, RH Pedro Strop, RH Justin Grimm, RH Carl Edwards Jr., LH Mike Montgomery, LH Travis Wood.

Catchers: Miguel Montero, David Ross, Willson Contreras.

Infielders: Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javy Baez, Tommy La Stella.

Outfielders: Jorge Soler, Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward, Chris Coghlan, Albert Almora Jr.

I suppose Soler may get a start versus Moore or Bumgarner, but good chance Bryant is playing LF the whole series

no tim federowicz? it's like they don't even want to win this thing.

surprise, surprise...Zobrist in LF, Baez at 2B, Bryant at 3B

Fowler, Bryant (3B), Rizzo, Zobrist (LF), Russell, Heyward, Baez (2B), Ross, Lester

david price vs the postseason is continuing it's 1-sided asskicking of d.price. last year was turrible...this year is starting out turrible. i could live without BOS being in the WS...scary bats are scary.

Seager with a HR off Scherzer in the 1st

Kershaw with an easy 1st, but then D. Murphy with his 50th straight hit(give or take) in the postseason

blacked out of the WAS game because of regional broadcast b/s. looking at twitter it seems a lot of people are blacked out from this game in very weird areas like ohio and oklahoma, too. *shrug* ...no idea.

Also, Giants just officially announced Samardzija, Bumgarner, and Moore as game 2, 3, and 4 starters. Team Stream notification just came up on my phone. No surprise in this rotation at all. They face Hendricks, Arrieta, and Lackey.

rob solved my issue, btw. it was on FS1, but my cable guide had it on MLB Network, and it seems other people did, too. we tuned in only to see regular coverage.

Happy to see... Joe took my advice and started my IF I posted from yesterday! Nice!!!!

TOR up 2-0 on the Rangers is definitely a surprise. Rangers are toast facing Sanchez next. Prob will end in a sweep. Also very surprised that Indians have dominated the Red Sox. They currently have a 5-0 lead bot 6. Price continues to be terrible in the postseason. Indians stole game 1, Red Sox should have had huge advantage with Porcello vs Bauer. Dodger 4, Nationals 2 bot 3. Much more scoring than expected this early in the game. As for tonight, I'm both excited and nervous. Why I'm nervous? Because it feels like we have to win the first 2 games to have a good chance of winning the series. Going to San Fran tied 1-1 has a huge risk of going down 2-1 because of Bumgarner. Bumgarner alone has a huge effect on the outcome of this series. Not surprised at all that Almora is on the roster. I wouldn't be surprised if Heyward is pinch hit for if he comes up with 2 runners on late in a 1 run game, especially if a LHP is in the game for the Giants. However, let's take it 1 pitch at a time and not even think about Bumgarner yet. Go Cubs! #FlyTheW

1. Gorkys Hernandez (R) CF 2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B 3. Buster Posey (R) C 4. Hunter Pence (R) RF 5. Angel Pagan (S) LF 6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS 7. Kelby Tomlinson (R) 2B 8. Conor Gillaspie (L) 3B 9. Johnny Cueto (R) P

I feel stealing with Daniel Murphy and his hurt butt is an unwise decision (only 5/8 on the season fwiw)

Desperation situation down 1, 2 out. I would do it 10/10, but as a hit & run. BTW, Cubs vs. Giants is on MLBN until Dodgers vs. Nationals ends, then it will be on FS1 for the remainder of the game.

I was under the impression that the Giants defense wasn't very good. I'm not seeing that.

Watching the FS1 post game - Frank Thomas loves him some Javy Baez ... he can't stop gushing about him. And Pete Rose is still a dick.

Okay, Baez, has a knack for big games. That fielding play in the ninth was as awesome as the home run.

Well that was fun. The same way that regaining control of your car just before hydroplaning into oncoming traffic is fun.

Bochy acknowledged in the post game interview that Posey also hit a ball that looked like it could have gone out if not for the wind. I would say the same of Ross's fly ball out to Gorky. It definitely could've been a very different game if not for the wind blowing in, the umpire's wide strike zone, and a couple slick plays on both sides.

I'd like to thank Jon Lester for not losing the game for us by not holding runners on, by not allowing multiple steals by Giants players, and generally by not pitching bad - in fact, pitching well. #Lester.

you need to thank david ross for those first 2 points. lester's lack of holding runners also turned a double play into a single out at 1st in the game. he's good when his catcher controls his game and lester controls not allowing runners on base to begin with. lester's good at that 2nd one.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

  • crunch (view)

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

  • crunch (view)

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
