Cubs @ Dodgers: Arrieta vs Hill (Game 169; NLCS Game 3)

Dodgers 6, Cubs 0
W: Hill (1-0); L: Arrieta (0-1)
Dodgers lead series: 2-1
PREVIEW
CHC (1-1): RHP Jake Arrieta (0-0, 3.00)
LAD (1-1): LHP Rich Hill (0-1, 4.63)
First pitch: 7:08pmCST

Arrieta had a no-decision in Game Three of the NLDS (6 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). He went seven scoreless against LA in May but didn’t factor in the 5-0 loss. He went 11-3 with a 3.59 on the road this season. Dodger Stadium was also the site of his first no-hitter last August. Overall, the Dodgers are 18-89 (.202) against him. Gonzalez is 6-21 with a HR.

Hill started two games in the NLDS against the Nationals: a four-run 4.1 inning loss and a one-run 2.2 inning no-decision. He went 4-4 with a 2.42 at Dodger Stadium this year. He has never faced the Cubs, but some new Cubs are 3-18 (.167) against him. Zobrist is 1-2; Coghlan is 1-3. Hill has been battling blisters, so his outing might be a short one.

It’s Lackey versus Urias tomorrow for Game Four.

Go Cubs!

Who has a bigger afternoon shadow advantage: Arrieta with the disappearing hard slider, or Hill with the big curve ball he throws from two or three different angles? I worry a little about Arrieta's diminished use of that slider/cutter; he's cut his usage of it from 29%-ish to 18%-ish from 2015 to 2016, using the fastball instead at about a 15% higher rate than last year. But if he can throw more early strikes, maybe he can go to that cutter/slider thing more frequently.

Cubs offense has scored 3rd most runs per game  in playoffs

  1. Nationals 4.8 R/G
  2. Blue Jays 4.29 R/G
  3. Cubs 4.17 R/G
  4. Indians 3.83 R/G
  5. Dodgers 3.43 R/G
  6. Rangers 3.3 R/G
  7. Giants 3.2 R/G
  8. Red Sox 2.33 R/G

OPS is 7th best though and a very poor .193 average...need some help from the BABIP gods.

I get the very small sample size, but...Red Sox last by almost a full run. Did not see that coming. Hopefully, Roberts will continue to manage like he did in the 8th inning of Game 1 -- intentionally walk bad hitters, then leave a RHP to face Miggy with a LHP warm in the pen.

Maddon downplayed possible changes to the starting lineup because #Dodgers starters will likely only go 5 innings the next two games. #Cubs

Per Maddon:

Don't ever permit the pressure to exceed the pleasure.

I think once I fully accepted that the baseball playoffs are just a series of coin flips, I've been pretty zen about it. 2008 almost did me in, I can't rememeber being anymore angry and disappointed than that (other than 2003 of course), but I'm just trying to enjoy the moments the last 2 seasons. That being said, when they're in a position to move into the next round or get eliminated, I get a lot more angsty. Game 4 vs the Giants I wasn't a happy camper watching them flail against Matt Moore...about as worked up as I had gotten all season over a game.

The 2016 Cleveland Indians are a great story and also a great example of the absurdity of the playoffs. They had no business shutting down the Red Sox or Blue Jays without Carrasco, Salazer and hell, even Bauer (not to mention Brantley gone all season) and yet, here we are.

I've been feeling a lot of anxiety about this postseason but it all seemed to lift yesterday. It helps to have Arrieta taking the mound, because you always know what he's going to give you--or rather, what he's going to give the other team. And I always did like Rich Hill. I had an idea this would happen when the Dodgers nabbed him at the deadline. Going forward, it all depends on whether some of our younger players can figure out how to help a team that's scuffling. I thought that Piniella's Cub playoff teams lay down like dogs, contemptibly. I hope this group doesn't do that. I don't think they will.

So we got the Bumgarner starters but with adjustments to the order. I like it though I'd consider switching outfield spots between Soler and Zobrist.

Almora is a useful late-inning piece, as is Contreras. Soler at most gets one pinch hit AB in a late inning situation because he's not staying in to play defense or run in a key situation. I'm also not sure Almora has any better chance to hit Hill than Heyward would. I really don't believe in his bat. But I probably hold an extreme opinion there.

Think my position was crystal clear in Soler on many recent posts. Very poor decision by Maddon for this kid in this spot, and unfamiliar place. Butcher in the outfield.

The play in CF was more dangerous where Soler didn't peel off, although to be fair he was camped under it and Fowler barely got there so I'm guessing someone told Fowler to pull a Kelly Leak out there tonight. Regardless, he is suppose to give way.

Bad decision on the throw no doubt...luckily it didn't hurt.

Score.Some.Runs.

Sooo... Make Javy your catcher now Jake??? /not getting paid

Unless the Dodgers trade for the SF bullpen, or Roberts starts intentionally walking bad hitters, this doesn't look good. Which means Lackey really needs to bring his Big Boy game tomorrow -- can't go down 3-1 with Kershaw waiting to finish them off.

Russell getting pinch hit for by J-Hey in the seventh. Perhaps Javy gets a start at short tomorrow. And J-Hey Ks on three pitches looking more hapless than Russell in the process

Ugly game. It happens. Tomorrow, we find out if this team really is different. I feel strangely optimistic.

Cubs hitting heros in the post-season so far: pitchers and Miggy. That's messed up.

Probably a good thing they are on the road, so they don't have to deal with the local media freaking out. But, geez, what a total crap game.

That 6th run was a "we're laughing at you" run. Let's see how the Cubs respond tomorrow. Season is on the line.

Haven't been shut out in consecutive games since May 2014. Time to turn it around tomorrow. Kind of glad Jansen pitched the ninth in a 6-0 game.

@BenFinfer To find the last time Cubs came back from a one-game deficit to win a playoff series you'd have to go all the way back to 2015.

2 shit games vs. 2 very good pitchers. I'm seeing a pattern for Cubs losses.

I'm glad I wasn't reading the comments here during the game. I sense a lot of frustration getting channeled into spite in some of these comments. Still not as bad as listening to Joe Buck and John Smoltz, though. Am going to listen to the radio broadcast tonight and hope the gap between the video feed and the radio doesn't drive me crazy.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.
