Mets @ Cubs: deGrom vs. Hendricks (Game 170; NLCS Game 3)

We’re still good, we’re still good...

It's not exactly an elimination game, except that it kind of is. If the Cubs want any chance at advancing, we have to have this one.

NYM: RHP Jacob deGrom
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks
First pitch: 7:07pmCT

Hendricks gave up 3 ER in 4.2 innings against the Cardinals in Game Two of the NLDS on Tuesday. At Wrigley this year, he’s 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA. He pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball against the Mets at Citifield on June 30. Overall, the Mets are 6-43 (.140) against him. Duda is 2-4 with a HR.

deGrom is 2-0 with a 1.38 in his two postseason games against the Dodgers, beating both Greinke and Kershaw. For the regular season, he was 8-4 with 3.09 on the road. In his two starts against the Cubs this season, he’s 0-2 with a 6.10, and the Cubs are hitting .300 against him. Overall, they are 11-41 (.268). Rizzo is 3-9 with a HR. Bryant is 1-2 with a HR.

Matz vs. Hammel tomorrow. Harvey vs. Lester in Game Five, if it happens. Alcohol vs. Liver, if it doesn't.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Wow -- those Cubs stats vs. deGrom made my day! Stomach is slightly less queasy, although the shaking in the hands hasn't fully gone away.

This is the least nervous I've been about the Cubs in a month. I fully expect the worst at this point and figure there is nothing to lose, so hard to be nervous. Cubs grab a quick lead, and win the game...then I'll get very nervous again for games 4&5.

Nothing to fear -- Cubs are undefeated this post-season when someone other than Lester or Arrietta starts a game.

Something else to enjoy about his team: My wife has a friend who is a doctor in a pediatric cancer ward in a Chicago children's hospital. Rizzo is a frequent visitor. The friend saw Anthony at the hospital today and said: "You're here today? With the playoffs?" Rizzo smiled and said "Of course!". Good dude.

I blame Bartman for nothing. It was a foul ball, he was looking to the ball and not at Alou feet below him and out of sight and I think most fans would have done the same thing. The error that followed was far more devastating. With that said, here is a note to Cubs fans going to Wrigley tonight: If you are in the first 5 rows, and a ball comes your direction. Kindly sit down, put your hands over your head, and crouch down and stay out of the friggin way. Thanks.

May there be 10 straight years of TCR posts with the words, "Game 170" in the the headline.

Well I'm a little jaded after the Mark Prior and Kerry Wood breakdowns, but when I look at the pipeline I find it hard to believe this won't last a while. They don't have enough space for all the young studs still in the minors - another wave on its way. Theo gets all the credit but I think it's time to give Ricketts his due. He's an actual Cubs fan, and I think he wants to turn this into a winning organization for years to come. I was a Ricketts cynic for the first couple years. I've changed my mind on that completely.

I think the key is pitching. Our minor league pitching prospects are thin. Is Lester a bit over the hill? How will Arrieta recover next year after blowing away his innings pitched career totals. Do Cubs pick up another expensive topline starter, or do they make a few trades for solid 3 and 4 options? Also...I am not seeing how the Cardinals will not improve on this year, and the Pirates aren't losing much either.

Good luck tonight, Cubbies and TCR posters. Whatever happens, I'll still be watching game 4 and be excited for whatever comes next. #WeAreStillGood

Given our lack of base runners, I wonder if LaStella will get the start in Game 4. EDIT: Probably not, given that AB.

I think the playoff pressure has gotten to Miggy. Good OBP guy in the season, but swinging at everything now. Terrible.

barf

It has been a wonderful and delightful season, but that was simply a piss-poor effort all around. May be one of their worst games of the year. Sad way to go out.

Out hit, out pitched, out fielded, out smarted, out managed. Just an absolute ass kicking of a series. Feels like tomorrow is not much more than fan appreciation day at Wrigley. Sad. Very sad.

Well, crap. At least avoid a sweep. That would be a really shitty way to end a great season.

The Mets last 3 runs all resulted on misplays by the Cubs -- WP 3rd strike, KB double-clutch, Schwarber not making that catch. If you're going to do that, you better get more than 5 hits.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
