17 Cubs Are Declared Minor League Free-Agents

17 Cubs minor leaguers were declared MLB Rule 55 minor league free agents at 5 PM (Eastern) today (Friday 11/2).

A club receives no compensation for losing a minor league free-agent.

A minor league free-agent can sign a major league or minor league contract with any club (including the player's former club) without any restrictions, so it's possible that one or more of the Cubs minor league free-agents will re-sign with the Cubs at some point during the off-season.

INF Gioskar Amaya, 1B-OF Yasiel Balaguert, OF Roberto Caro, C Erick Castillo, RHP Erick Leal, and OF-1B Chris Pieters were eligible to be Rule 55 minor league 6YFA and LHP Danny Hultzen was eligible to be a Rule 55 second-contract minor league FA post-2018, but each of them signed a 2019 minor league successor contract in the days and weeks prior to the deadline.

C-1B Taylor Davis and RHP Allen Webster were eligible to be Rule 55 minor league 6YFA post-2018, but their contracts were selected and they were added to the Cubs MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) in September.

MLB RULE 55: An unsigned minor league player is automatically declared a free-agent at 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series (the deadline is October 15th if the World Series is canceled) if the player has spent all or any part of at least seven separate seasons on a minor league roster (including all or parts of any season spent on Optional Assignment to the minors and/or on a minor league disabled list) and/or if the player has been previously released or non-tendered in his career and his present contract (known as a "second contract" even if it's his third or fourth minor league contract) has expired.

For purposes of determining eligibility to be a minor league free-agent where spending seven separate seasons on a minor league roster is required, a player does not accrue a minor league season if the player spends the entire season on an MLB Active List, MLB Disabled List(s), and/or other MLB Inactive List, or if the player spends an entire season on the Restricted List, Disqualified List, Suspended List, Ineligible List, Voluntarily Retired List, and/or Military List. Also, participation in a post-season instructional league or winter league and/or the Arizona Fall League (AFL) does not count toward a minor league season if the player otherwise did not accrue a minor league season that year.

Note that a player who ordinarily would have been declared a Rule 55 minor league free-agent is NOT eligible to be a free-agent if the player is either added to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or agrees to a minor league successor contract prior to 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series.

It's in the news today that NHL players have voted the Blackhawks as having the best "sweater" in the NHL. At least Hawk fans will have laundry to root for this year and in the next several.

Interesting, though, how iconic these Chicago uniforms seem to be. Personally, as a kid on the South Side I thought the Sox had the coolest duds in the world: black and white, pinstriped, that great three-letter logo with no final "s" necessary. If Banks had been modeling the jersey instead of Fox and Aparicio, I'd be reading a different baseball blog.

AZ PHIL: What is the deal with Corey BlacK? Why can’t he crack the majors? Also, do you see the next Marwin Gonzalez in this list?

he's also prone to getting angry and expressing it on social media...along with being very defensive about it.  strong will and determination shapes people's attitudes in different ways, i guess.

he also had elbow spurs cleaned out a couple weeks ago, so he's had fresh surgery on top of his past stuff.  this point is most likely a bigger issue than the 1st one.

E-MAN: There's really nobody on the Cubs minor league FA list who would profile as a Marwin Gonzalez-type, but if you look at the Cubs minor leaguers eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft, 2018 Cubs Minor League Player of the Year Jason Vosler would probably be the closest comp, at least as far as being able to play all four infield positions (although SS would be strictly "In Case of Emeregncy Only"). But Vosler can play 3B-1B and I've seen him at 2B in Minor League Camp and he can play the position (at least passably), and at some point in 2019 Vosler will probably get some reps in the corner OF spots  as well, and if he can handle that (and he probably can) that would increase his value on a Joe Maddon team.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
