Gameday Open Thread / Giants @ Cubs

Z takes the mound in Cactus League action against the Giants and Matt Morris. Matt Morris of course was a former Cardinal who married a Cubs beat reporter. What does this have to do with anything? Not much, but it bugged me the first time I read it and it bugs me everytime I see his ugly mug. A few quick notes/links: I received an email about the screening of a Cubs documentary called "Chasing October". You can view the trailer here and read more about it. They are doing a screening in Scottsdale, AZ tomorrow at the Harkins Camelview Theater with proceeds being donated to Derrek Lee's Project 3000 and an exclusive run will start on March 16th at the same theater. It'll also open in Chicago starting on March 23rd. Also, we have a new minor league site here at MVN devoted just to the Cubs, Road to Wrigley. Stop by and say hi. Eventually their posts will show up on our sidebar similarly to the "Division Rivals" box. Don't forget to get your copy of Wrigley Season Ticket 2007 and The Hardball Times 2007 Season Preview. (And yes I'm going to beat you over the head about these, but hopefully in a tasteful and entertaining way!)

in other news derrek lee learned to log on to mlb.tv today..oh wait, what's this? he's playing? Um...where's my scorecard? Nurse? Back to you Bob.

This is priceless, Bonds has turned two flies to left into a double and a single. He looked like my Grandpa playing left. Floyd..bases loaded no outs. First pitch, misses a Morris curve by about half a second and a foot. Takes a pitch then knocks a clean single through the right side of the infield for a 2 RBIs.

Hokey smokes, couple of E's on Bonds already? 4 runs with no outs in top of the first.

God, I am getting over a cold and this game is going to kill me if I keep laughing like this. It's like the Three Stooges go to Scotsdale.

Z takes a tumble on his way to third? What did they put in the Gatorade today? sounds so far more like a game from "Beer League"

Z trips between second and third on a triple. Sure hope he didn't pull something.

"Z trips between second and third on a triple. Sure hope he didn’t pull something." I'd be more worried about the infield than Zambrano. Also, how do steroids turn a former Gold Glove LFer into the RFer from my Pinto League team who wore blue jeans to games and picked his nose in the outfield? I know his knees are shot, but so were Dawson's.

Nope, Zambrano still hasn't learned respect, he went ahead and struck out Bonds on a high fastball. Does Ray Durham look like Howard Johnson to anyone else?

Good news on Z Are the Giants really going to bat Durham 4th? And we are bickering about the fifth starter.

crazy thought, but maybe Bonds wasn't trying too hard in LF in a spring training game. What do you think? and his knees are completely shot on top of not giving a shit anymore about his fielding especially in a ST game.

Floyd got 2, too hard to keep up with who got RBI's, essentially there were three errors that got called hits in the first for the Cubs. Bonds got to the ball, but he didn't keep his eye on it and held his glove over his head to keep from getting bonked. Jones just doubled into the left field gap with Lee and Ramirez on. One RBI there, 8 on the spring for Jock.

"crazy thought, but maybe Bonds wasn’t trying too hard in LF in a spring training game. What do you think?" Nobody likes to look like a fool in front of thousands of people, regardless of whether or not it's ST. And 2 errors in one inning makes you look like a fool. Then again, this is the same guy who showed up last year in a Paula Abdul outfit.

yeah, I'm sure Bonds will worry greatly about his perception in front of the fans. I imagine him losing hours of sleep over it.... :)

Derrek Lee just left the game after a clumbsy slide. Looks like he could have stayed in if the game counted.

This freaking umpire is squeezing Zambrano and it's starting to tick me off.

I'm glad Zambrano is being squeezed. No better time than a spring training game for somebody, namely the umpire, to screw around with Z in order to see how he reacts. Does he rise about questionable umpiring, or does he succumb? Does he let his emotions get the best of him, or does he knuckle down? He needs a test like this, and now is the perfect time to conduct it.

how's jones' throws looking this spring. i havent heard much about it except he's hitting the cutoff men better.

Cubster- You mention watching in NZ at 9? Try Brisbane at 6:00. Our not having Daylight Savings Time really screws things up. Not to mention the US moving the end of DST up...

try brisbane? with the weather there i'd love to try brisbane...hehe.

I don't know, Crunch... It's been highs of 38*C here the past couple of days, which equates to ... 100.4*F. Not good.

These radio guys are not good. Say what you will about Ron's, uh, abilities, but Pat is outstanding. Both of these guys are lame.

What I'd like to see Barry Bonds catch is a grand jury indictment for perjury.........I can't believe $16.5 million from the Giants because he puts butts in the seats to break the HR record. Unbelievable.

Yeah it's pretty brutal. Ron might be...um, special, but I love him and at least enjoy the broadcasts.

z just K'd a guy (not sure who-just turned it on) and then took of his hat and yelled something. His shoulder has dirt on it from that tumble you guys were talking about. This guy is classic.

did the Giants' PA announcer really just say Jeff "ZA MOE JUH" was in to pitch?!

THERIOT! Hopefully Lou has the balls to start Theriot over DeRosa. it's obvious who the more complete player is. plus, he is an IDEAL 2nd batter, seeing a ton of pitches, getting on base quite a bit for D.Lee, hitting the other way, and ADDING speed at the top of the lineup.

SamarJAW is pitching to Barry right now. This kid looks great, like he should be on the roster right now. That good.

Boy, Samardziah;jadsgn's slider is absolutely filthy today. Other than a couple of seeing eye singles, he was excellent.

Three two out singles. No good contact, 2 could have had plays on em. Great location of his fastball. Got out of the jam on a flyout to center that Soriano had trouble locating in the sun. He looks like a real quality pitcher.

was that Phil that said there are rumblings in the Cubs organization about how big a steal SmarJAW is going to be? It may have been the score, but apparently his velocity has gone up from 90ish (during football season, heavy lifting ect) and since it has increased to mid-nineties. He looks like he could literally be an ace. Today, they described one of his pitches as "lethal". My new man crush.

what the hell was Izturis hitting before today? MLB boxscore says he's down to .412 after going 0-4. And Jake Fox keeps raking....

"what the hell was Izturis hitting before today? MLB boxscore says he’s down to .412 after going 0-4." Based on his Spring Training, I can safely say that Cesar Itzuris will flirt with .400 all year long. You can't stop Cesar Izturis, you can only hope to contain him. But really, I think if pitchers only threw fastballs all year long, Cesar would be a much better hitter. Once they really start throwing sliders and curves...

I tell you what I really like about Samarasd;fjhadnbdija. The slider, obviously, but also his velocity continues to increase and he's got a really good looking sinker at 91-92. Try hitting a 92 mph sinker in the air. Can't be done. No way. He doesn't throw it a whole lot, though. I wish he'd throw that more instead of supposedly working on the change.

its still early. the change is just what he was focusing on in peoria. he's not been around long and maybe the 4-seamer/sinker is higher up on the list now...or maybe he's just giving it a test run...or etc. either way he's got a nice base of a fastball/slider and is only a complimenting pitch away from being a very interesting option.

Is now an OK time to point out that I was mocked and scorned when I called the Sammyninja signing a good deal? Who's having the last laugh now, huh? It's me, Zoidberg! hahahahhahaaaaaaaaa. Er, ah, I'm glad he's having an encouraging spring. hooray spring.

Freedom, Freedom, Freedom, OY! Freedom, Freedom, Freedom, OY! Freedom, Freedom, Freedom, OY!

Is now an OK time to point out that I was mocked and scorned when I called the Sammyninja signing a good deal? yes, you were right. He really looks to be worth every penny the Cubs spent on him. And I understand your plight, having been mocked and scorned for speculating a week earlier than most that Mark Prior's career might be toast.

prior's career is toast? someone better tell him quick..... the guy's 26, if something doesn't click within the next month or two, he probably heads for surgery to fix that "looseness" and he tries again in about a year...

I am quite certain I've never suggested that Prior is toast. In fact, I'm quite certain I was one of the people advising no one to panic. I've certainly been wrong before - just not much lately. ~grin~

when do we scrap the idea of soriano playing center field? when does theriot get the official nod at 2b? When do we start tossing around the idea of trading the likes of guzman, eyre, and murton for Rocco Baldelli? ....this bud's for you?

By the way, his stuff was fan*tas*tic. And he stayed cool and hit his spots dead-on most of the time. It was very impressive.

sammy knows he's not making the club (immediately at least) so he's not sweating results and just letting his ability do its thing. i think its great that he seemed to do well cutting loose like that. maybe howry was the opposite, sweating results and "aiming" his pitches too hard. just a thought.

Samardzja knick name at ND was the Shark (due to his profile). It would be cool that one day at Wrigley when he comes in from the bullpen and they play the theme form "Jaws".

howry's probably working on something like most pitchers do at this time. I don't think Eyre is doing too hot either.

Not to be petty but please don't refer to Samardjiza as "Sammy"... I vote Angel for #5, Theriot for second base for what its worth. Looking ahead, I'd like to see these 12 pitchers break camp: 1. Zambrano 2. Lilly 3. Marquis 4. Hill 5. Guzman 6. Dempster 7. Howry 8. Eyre 9. Wood 10. Cotts 11. Rapada 12. Wuertz (if healthy)

parappa the rappa hasnt been fooling too many this spring. out of the "little to no chance" kids out there rocky cherry has the early lead on that one. still...unless the team dumps/trades/sends-down miller, guzman, or prior there's not much room for anyone.

Hey guys, thanks for the mention of my site, Road To Wrigley. As I mentioned over in the comments of my site, we're just getting going right now, and we have a lot planned. So check back often, especially once the minor league season begins.

Ohman vs lefties the last 2 years... 165/274/286 I think we could use someone like that... for comparision, Scott Eyre &Neil Cotts  and I'll go Billy Wagner & Mike Myers as test cases the last 3 years... Eyre: 216/285/376 Cotts: 240/328/414 Wagner: 136/177/174 Myers: 213/272/321 yeah I think Ohman's got something going for him there...

wagner is that good against lefties? wow. yeah, i know, its not THAT surprising...but still, yeah, i wouldnt imagine a sub-.200 ob% and especially not slugging.

How is it possible for a pitcher to have a higher slugging percentage against than OBP against? He gives up more walks than extra-base hits?

yeah I guess.... 132 AB, 18 H, 1 3b, 1 HR, 4 BB, 3 HBP, 40 K over the last 3 yrs for Wagner. I'm guessing the HBP "hurt" Wagner on the OBP side..

Unfortunately, Ohman is a LOOGY, whereas Wagne, Eyre and potentially Cotts are not. If I have to watch Ohman 'turn around' Berkman one more time, I am going to cry. I guess he can get crappy right handed hitters out, but the good ones seem to own him.

.239/.349/.369 against righties the last 2 years but that wasn't my point. Point is that Ohman is as good against lefties as there is and that should be his role on the team. Seems to be some sort of of outcry that Ohman is expendable (which he is to a degree) because we may have 3 lefties in the pen, although he's the best of the bunch at actually getting lefties out. I guess he can get crappy right handed hitters out, but the good ones seem to own him. I'm going to venture a guess that the good righty hitters own a lot of lefty pitchers in the league especially those of Berkman's abilities.

Yeah, but Berkman's a switch hitter. I would rather have Weurtz,Howry,Dempster or Wood facing Berkman from the left side than Ohman from the right.

okay, Berkman's a far better left-handed hitter than he is a righty, so I'd probably go with Cotts and Eyre in those situations (and Remlinger when he was here), but I don't actually understand where all this came from. (for the record, Berkman is 2 for 6 with a walk, 2 K's and a homer versus Ohman, you must have a real bad memory of the homer). I was just saying that Ohman is an extremely effective LOOGY and should be used accordingly.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

pablo sandoval played 3rd and got a couple ABs (strikeout, single!) in the OAK@SF "exhibition"

mlb officially authenticated the ball of the single he hit.  nice.

he's in surprisingly good shape considering his poor body condition in his last playing seasons.  he's not lean, but he looks healthier.  good for him.
