Cubs @ Astros Series Preview

Cubs_Astros The Cubs have sixteen series left, four of which are against teams with records currently above .500 (Rockies, Diamondbacks, Dodgers & Brewers). They have three series left versus the Astros. I'll go out on a limb here and say if the Cubs don't make the playoffs, they don't deserve it.

Wandy has a rather incredible home/road split this year - 8.16 ERA on the road, 1.76 at home. Of course Sean Marshall dominated the Astros last year at Minute Maid Park to the tune of 14 IP and one solo home run. Wednesday's matchup sure looks fun. The Matchups

Hopefully that game Wednesday is a night game. I hate to Z leave with cramps because he doesnt like water. Z just buy yourself HI-C or kool aid. The sugar blocks out the water taste.

There's no kool-aid left; fans drank Wrigleyville's supply long ago... Seriously, what about Gatorade or Powerade? This seems like an enormously simple problem to solve and the fact that the Cubs haven't figured it out makes me wonder just how good Mark O'Neil is at his job...

don't worry...the Minute Maid Park is going to have the roof closed and the AC fired up, it'll be 90 degrees with 90% humidity in Houston on Wednesday.

PEDIALITE! To me, the inconsistency of the 3-4-5 starters are more troubling than the loss of Soriano.

To me, the inconsistency of the 3-4-5 starters are more troubling than the loss of Soriano. See... we agree on something! :) Kind of. I don't think that Marshall has been inconsistent this year. Marshall only has three starts all year where he has given up more than 2 runs. I really am not worried about him. Hill has also been decent over his last few starts before the most recent one. In the three previous starts, he gave up 2 runs in each. Of course, he has thrown way too many pitches which hasn't allowed him to pitch deep enough into games, which is most definitely troublesome. Marquis hasn't really been inconsistent either. He has been bad, with one or two decent/good games. Since May 14th, Marquis has given up more than 3 runs in 10 of his 16 starts. So yea... worried about Marquis, slightly worried about Hill, not really worried about Marshall... yet.

I’ll go out on a limb here and say if the Cubs don’t make the playoffs, they don’t deserve it. We'll be okay as long as we don't go ALL-CUBS and implode over the loss of Alfonso. A quick look at the September schedule reveals that the Brewers finish the season playing 17 consecutive games. Our last dozen games include 9 vs the bottom-dwelling Reds and Pirates while the Brewers finish with 8 out of 11 vs the Braves and Padres, both of whom should be in the thick of it.

Dave, dave, dave :-) Yep. I know - I agree to a point. I suppose really he exhibits what most "baseball immature" pitchers go through. He is learning on the job. I fact, I feel more confident with he (Marshall) on the "bump" than either Hill or Marquis. Do you really feel confident when Marquis pitches? I mean since early May, walks have been killing him. He has a problem "finishing". Rich Hill has just got to smoke the 'Stros tonight. More innings from the starters are absolutely crucial more than ever.

Do you really feel confident when Marquis pitches? I never said I feel confident with Marquis. I said he has been bad, and that I was worried about him. I am still fairly confident that both Marshall and Hill will pitch well down the stretch, but they (Hill especially) do worry me a bit.

Another thing that worries me about the starting pitching and their recent inability to go deep into games is that the bullpen no longer has an open door to the Peoria/Chicago shuttle. They no longer have a pitcher that they can send down and bring back up in order to have a fresh arm when needed. I guess Wuertz and Marmol could each be that guy, but I don't think that any of us really want either of them in Iowa instead of the Cubs' bullpen.

Baseball America's "Top Tools" edition is out and 3 Cub prospects who played for Peoria were picked as having best tools in the Midwest League. Matt Camp --- best baserunner Wellington Castillo --- best defensive catcher Josh Lansford --- best defensive 3rd baseman But except for F. Pie that's about it for the entire Cubs minor league system.

WSCR Radio 670 reporting that E. Patterson purchased from Iowa, Soriano placed on 15 day DL, Wade Miller placed on outright waivers, and Dopirak is DFA'd.

on the score steve stone said patterson will probally play center. for what its worth The Des Moines Register said E Patt has done okay in CF....better than in Left. It's hard to imagine he could look worse than Angel Pagan and JJ have lately. And if he does well we could see another all-2B outfield in September (Soriano, Patterson, DeRosa).

CWTP, I have heard rumors that Hendry is going to try Biggio out of retirement this week to be our catcher next year so that he can field his dream team of Aram,Dlee, and 6 2b's.

And if he does well we could see another all-2B outfield in September (Soriano, Patterson, DeRosa). DeRosa has pretty much established himself as the starting 2b. I would be pretty surprised if DeRosa is playing RF over Floyd or Jock, at least against rhp.

Not Cubs related ... but the Yankees have moved into a tie for the wild card. That has been one helluva' comeback for them!

Sean Marshall's ERA on June 20th 2.84 Marshall's ERA today? 3.86 Rich Hill's ERA on June 20th 3.22 Hill's ERA today? 3.67 Jason Marquis' ERA on June 20th 3.38 Marquis' ERA today? 4.39

If you're interested, JEFF SAMARDZIJA makes his AA debut versus a very good Montgomery Biscuits team @ 7:15 EDT

Chifan, Nice, but I think we can go with: Patterson (CF) Theriot (SS) Soriano (LF) DeRosa (RF) Fontenot (2B) Walker (1B) Neifi (3B) Biggio (C) To really get the deal done.

according to the Trib blog... The Cubs will keep Cliff Floyd in left with Soriano on the disabled list with a strained right quad, with Matt Murton sharing time in right with Angel Pagan. The Cubs have not disclosed the results of the MRI on Soriano's quad, but manager Lou Piniella said he's expected to miss around a month. hope they're wrong....

Thank God we don't have to suffer Matt Murton as a regular player! Imagine where we would be if the Mets didn't decide to unload Pagan for nothing prior to the 2006 season. I mean, come on, Murton only had an OPS of .925 last August followed by .969 September . Let's hope Pagan can repeat his .783 and .461 from last year and lead us to the playoffs. In Pinheadiella we dwella.

If EP isn't going to play a lot, I still believe going to 13 pitchers for this week would have been a better idea.

CWTP: "...JEFF SAMARDZIJA" So, CWTP, is this the correct spelling here? I have seen so many interesting approaches here on this name - can't say I know myself, either.

The Cubs playoff chances are not just up to their schedule. The Brewers schedule has something to do with it.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
