Oh wow..... ------ In other news, there's a radio report on ESPN1000 (and now a Trib blog entry) that Will Ohman has been sent down and Sean Gallagher called up. Reader Wes may have uncovered the motivation beyond Ohman's 5+ ERA in this cubs.com article.
The Cubs are considering the possibility of someone in the Minor Leagues making a spot start to give the other starters a breather.
The Cubs face the Rockies for four this weekend and currently had Lilly, Marquis, Hill and Marshall slated to start. All three lefties rely quite heavily on big curveballs and the thin air of Colorado has a tendency to make your curve not curve so much. It would also be a great time to pass on Rich Hill who's a flyball specialist. At least Marquis and Marshall generally keep the ball on the ground. If that is the plan, I'd like to see Lilly, Marquis, Gallagher, and Marshall myself.

that lineup sucks...it's the worst lineup in the history of baseball....(that oughta be good for 12 runs)

What about letting Marmol start, and move Marshall to the pen this next week? The downside? No Marmol in the pen :(

Not to screw with the mojo, and I'd like it a lot more if Rammy wasn't getting the day off, but on a normal day I might put DeRosa at 2B and go with that lineup. Especially if Patterson wants to hit a little bit. I'd be nice to actually have somebody on in front of the top of the order.

woody williams is a washed up pitcher there is no reason we cant score six runs off him even if he pitched well in one game vs. cubs this year. i say cubs win 7-3 and that the (STRAP) hits a homerun .

seems like the last time vs. woody the only cub who went deep was no other then carlos zambrano

Lou says baseball is about peaks and troughs. I am currently hating this trough. We should be beating the Stros. Even without Sori. Let's hope for a run and make baseball fun again.

THE WITCH IS DEAD!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!!! FUCK YOU OH-MAN! May I never see you in the NL again!

On the Pena debate from the last thread, I would add that I think he can hit. He can definitely hit for power but in order to do that he probably needs regular ABs. The cubs don't offer that to him. Think he needs to wind up somewhere like the Nationals and get playing time. Aren't the Marlins looking for outfielders too?

Wow. Does Ohman really deserve a 'fuck you'? Dude is just trying to do his job...even IF misused.

Don't stand in the way of E-man's blind hatred..... Ohman not only struggled this year particularly vs righties, but he also drowns puppies and steals from the poor in his spare time.

Yeah. Ohman, you dick. How dare you try to play baseball and fail? You puppy-hating reverse-Robin Hood!

The E-Man: ...FUCK YOU OH-MAN!... Wow.. that was a little bit _________ . a. over the top b. 4th grade c. undeserving d. all of the above e. other

I hope to see Ohman in the NL again, E-man, pitching for, say, the Brewers! I don't ... other managers will probably know how to use him correctly. Wow.. that was a little bit _________ . D.

so the team has 1 lefty now...and its eyre... *shudder* i dunno what gallagher's learned since his last callup, but he was overmatched and getting hit on all his pitches last time around...limited, though it was.

Leave it out guys. E Man is as frustrated as most of us. He can make ohman the scapegoat if he wants to. I, however, am going to choose ryan dempster.

What about letting Marmol start, and move Marshall to the pen this next week? No... for two reasons. 1 - Marmol is not stretched out to start anymore. He would probably give you two or three innings at best right now. 2 - Marshall has arguably been the Cubs' most consistent starter outside of Zambrano. If anyone should get moved out of the rotation, it should be Marquis.

What makes our starters need a rest now? And why only one of them? Surely the bullpen is where rest is required?

Well, we ALL have one scapegoat if you are breathing, on this team. I have adopted Oh-Man! as mine. NEVER liked the guy's pitching prowess during his Cubs tenure. I guess I was not alone on this (Lou Piniella). I take back what I said, though, in my excitement: !!UOY KCUF NAMHO

not that I had a problem with Ohman, but the Angels seem to survive most every year without a freaking lefty. Wood, Marmol, Howry, Dempster can get guys from both sides of the plate. Wuertz isn't too shabby either although he gets a little walk happy against the lefties, at least this year. Howry actually has a pretty definitive reverse split this year: 767 vs righties, 624 vs lefties

dave: 2 - Marshall has arguably been the Cubs’ most consistent starter outside of Zambrano. If anyone should get moved out of the rotation, it should be Marquis. I know, but Marshall or anyone else shouldn't think of such a move as a demotion. He could become the primary left-handed bullpen character. Moving Marquis wouldn't solve the problem of getting a reliable lefty in the pen. 1 - Marmol is not stretched out to start anymore. He would probably give you two or three innings at best right now. Yeah. :(

Dave, rynox’s question was reciprocal. Reciprocal? Reciprocal of what? Maybe you meant rhetorical? And it sure didn't sound rhetorical.

mark: Anyone wanna have a guess at EPat’s line for tonight? The over / under is one hit. 1-4, SB, 2 K, R

Careful not to incur AZ Phil's wrath Jord. AZ, you should definitely have a prediction too.

This was so stupid. We've got one left-hander in the bullpen. Regardless how well he's pitched in the last two or three weeks, Lou is taking a huge leap of faith with Eyre that he can throw some strikes. We've got 7 guys down there, and Lou won't use Wuertz, Gallagher, or Wood (for the time being) in a tight spot. We're down to half the bullpen when it's late and close. He's going to have to lean on Eyre to get lefties out and that scares me. I've never been worried about Marmol's workload since he's young and was just a starter last season, but I am becoming concerned with how much Howry is working (for the second straight year) and how many appearances Dempster will make returning from typically nagging injury as we come down the stretch.

Ohman not only struggled this year particularly vs righties, but he also drowns puppies and steals from the poor in his spare time. -------------------------------------------------------- Speaking of drowning puppies, has anyone seen this? http://www.vickdogchewtoy.com

I'm honestly not too worried. Marmol and Wood are just as tough on lefties as Ohman was.

vs lefties this year Ohman 233/313/400 (60 Ab's) Marmol 216/365/294 (51 Ab's) Howry 215/288/333 (93 Ab's) Dempster 262/359/369 (65 Ab's) Wuertz 237/375/322 (59 Ab's) Eyre 275/356/529 (51 Ab's) Wood 246/330/481 (391 Ab's from 2004-2006)

Rob, I know htere is a sample size issue but you should only count relief ab vs lefties. A pitcher will pitch differently in relief and I'll be his stats are even lower.

I'm sure a member of a starting rotation in the bigs would be happy to become the primary lefty out of the bullpen. That's where all the real money and security is anyway, as the... Wait..what?

I don't really have anything else to go off of for Kerry, except those 8 innings from 2005, so it wasn't worth it. But thanks for the lesson on starters vs relievers. I had no idea. :)

"but he also drowns puppies and steals from the poor in his spare time." Vegas Brian sort of beat me to the punch, but Ohman's off-season employer was Bad Newz Kennels.

the record is how many strike outs or fly outs a team can get with the bases loaded

Ron Santo simply beside himself with frustration at the Cubs' lack of clutch hitting.

What happened to the Cubs' offense? Seriously. DLee with two K's!!>!H@)&^@ This is Woody Freakin' Williams, he of the 5.26 ERA. We're making these chump-ass pitchers look like Cy Freakin' Young. This is insanely frustrating...

yeah dcf, and I remember after it was over I wished I'd done something else with my evening...

I keep trying to think about how awesome it's going to be when this all evens out and everybody from ARam to Rich Hill is dropping 3-run HRs on the Brew Crew later this month. But right now it's kinda hard to picture.

i don't really want to compare brothers with each other bc they are their own people....but....i almost threw up in my mouth after EPat swung and missed at his THIRD high fastball of the evening.....god i forgot how much korey sucked.

boooo

wood warming up? bases loaded, heart of the order? so much for easing him in

5.1 inning outing for marshall, sweet. at least we can hit some HRs to get back into it....opps.

eli18: No, this is not a playoff team. We left that team in Cincinnati two weeks ago.

you have to ask yourself, would the cubs of been better off with C.Lee over Soriano?

but we only face 3 winning teams the rest of the year....clearly that doesn't mean anything. How can I go from loving to hating this team so quickly?

We're not beating this losing team, so I'm not sure how we'll beat all the other ones we face the rest of the year. And if we can't hit any of the Astro's cadre of 5.25+ ERA pitchers, what will we do down the stretch against quality pitching? Wow, Murton.

i mean, they are being shut down by truly shitty pitchers....it's like it doesn't matter who's on the roster...bad pitchers, particularly lefties own the cubs.

Mad Murt making his bid to overtake Soriano for team HR leader ... Murt now tied with JJ and closing quick on Theriot.

What a way to end it, striking out the side. How many of those 13 third "strikes" were actually in the strike zone tonight?

OK I like Theriot a bunch but what in GOD'S name was he swinging at on that last pitch? I know it's the end of the game, but come on. And it's not just him...Murton got fooled super bad on his last pitch, and Floyd's stagger/choke/check from yesterday was epic. Do they all have hot dates? Is the Houston mafia after them, and they're trying to skip town? What gives? Astros pitchers are just gonna roll the ball over the plate tomorrow, just to watch the Cubs hack at it. Go Rockies...sigh

13 more K' s for the hot-hitting Cubs. Two runs in 2 games against Wandy and Woody -- one on a ground out, one on a bases loaded-walk. What happened to all those nice 2-out hits? Bases loaded, a run in, no outs in the first, Woody on the mound - they should have blown this game open early. DLee looks like he needs a day off -- he was clueless up there tonight. I hate the fact that Jacque Jones and Cliff Floyd are starting outfielders for this team. Cubs now 4-over, with 5 left on the trip -- Oswalt tomorrow, then 4 in Colorado. Will they be over .500 when they return home? Maybe not.

*Cubs now 4-over, with 5 left on the trip — Oswalt tomorrow, then 4 in Colorado. Will they be over .500 when they return home? Maybe not.* Of course not. Probably because everyone got all cocky and confident, slavering at the thought of alllll these under .500 teams the Cubs were going to get fat on, talking shit and telling cheeseheads to "suck it". Pride goeth before a fall, or a torn quad, as it were.

Like I said on Friday---April/May Cubs are back. This is completely depressing. I almost can't wait until football season starts. This team has no shot to win anything the way they've played for the 5 days. We'll be lucky if we finish .500 So I will sit here wondering why Ramirez isn't playing when we need him most--or why Patterson is playing. He pretty much put the nail in the coffin in the 3rd with his strikeout. Why not start Murt tonight and have someone with SOME experience in that situation. By the way, Patterson is his brother. His swing has just as many holes, swings for the big hit, and too many strikeouts. Yes, I realize it is just one game, but I know what I saw along with what I have heard. He will be no better than his brother in the majors. You can package him in any deal and forget about him.

The Cubs are still 1.5 games out of first, and MIL is losing. Everybody go to bed, snuggle with your teddy bear, and look forward to tomorrow's game. I think Z will be on fire.

I think Cliff Floyd needs some time off...Maybe Murton's HR will get us an outfield of Patterson, Jones and Murton tommorrow...

Tough luck that we have to face the tractor - loving guy tomorrow - but he hasn't always dominated against us. Hope springs eternal.

I'd vote for that too Dave (cliff never coming back). I really don't get why the Cubs didn't trade Izturis for Wily Mo a few weeks ago. It made too much sense for both teams... Lou's lineup sure didn't help tonight. If Ramirez starts, we coulda put em away in the first inning... The Cubs should seriously consider trading Cedeno now. I'm convinced that they're committed to Theriot at short, so they might as well trade him now, when his Iowa stats are fresh in people's mind.

how can anyone feel good after the last 3 games? 1 game out or 2, this team is in serious trouble right now.

Any chance we could get Randy Winn for Cedeno? Would Winn clear waivers? I can't imagine SF wouldn't want to dump salaries and re-tool with some younger talent.

Any chance we could get Randy Winn for Cedeno? I can't imagine that SF wouldn't want to dump salaries and re-tool. Would Winn clear waivers?

I really don’t get why the Cubs didn’t trade Izturis for Wily Mo a few weeks ago. It made too much sense for both teams… Uhh... what? How would that make sense for the Red Sox? Izzy is bad. Really bad. Really bad players don't make sense for the Red Sox. how can anyone feel good after the last 3 games? How about because it is only 3 games?

bonds can suck my butt. he deserves nothing. he could have had the world, but he chose planet balco. good riddance.

"Uhh… what? How would that make sense for the Red Sox? Izzy is bad. Really bad. Really bad players don’t make sense for the Red Sox." Izturis is having a better year than Julio Lugo...

Izturis is having a better year than Julio Lugo… No he isn't. Unless batting average is the only thing that matters. Izzy: .245/.291/.296 Lugo: .227/.291/.331 Especially when you include the fact that Lugo is 26 for 30 in stolen bases.

Further... Lugo's career OPS is 100 points better than Izzy's. And Izzy has a 53 OPS+ this year compared to Lugo's 63. Career OPS+: Izzy: 67 Lugo: 89

Nice one, DM Only, where's DM? Dungeon Master Cub Fan? Where did Pinheadiella get the idea that Murton can't hit right handed pitching, anyway? Why is Hendry enabling Pinhead to continue platooning Murton? I thought Patterson was brought up to hit leadoff - why is he batting 6th or 7th, whereever the hell he was last night? If we wanted to get a left handed hitter to bat down in the lineup, Pie and Kroeger are probably better fits. Floyd, DeRosa, Kendall and Cedeno have all hit Oswalt well (sample sizes not being a factor). Maybe Patterson gets to leadoff tonight with Cedeno and DeRosa manning the middle of the infield, and Murton hoping that he doesn't get an AB because Zambrano pitches the whole game.

So how many starts will that HR earn Murton? I predict 0. Hitting a pinch home run was exactly what Murton needed to do. One home run this season was exactly why Murton wasn't playing. Lou is from Missouri. You hit, you play. Don't tell me about your rookie year. Show me. What's complicated?

"Lou is from Missouri. You hit, you play. Don’t tell me about your rookie year. Show me. What’s complicated?" Jacque Jones, Jason Kendall, Koyie Hill ? For the month of May, Murton had a .803 OPS Jones .591 Floyd .822 Murton got a grand total of 3 starts in June when he got sent down. Over that same time frame, Jones got 7 starts. Why is it so hard to grasp the concept that Murton plays better when he plays frequently, and that the 2006 version of Murton is better than the 2006 or 2007 version of Floyd and Jones?

Yeah, Lou has been playing multiple guys who haven't been hitting well (including Soriano, who has a .277 OBP in the second half), so I don't buy this crap that Lou only plays guys who do hit. He's no more of a saint then anyone else and has a consistent habit wherever he's coached of having personal vendattas against certain players, mostly catchers. Also, if the only reason Murton isn't playing is because of a lack of HRs, then I think every player on the Cubs should be sat.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
