Don't get cute, go after them. Stolen Bases are your friend! Webb doesn't pay much attention to runners and he doesn't give many opportunities to score runs. Soriano, Theriot, Lee and Jones should all look to try and steal if the chance arrives. Spy vs Spy! A close game seems like a high probability which means the bullpens will factor in greatly into the game. Cruz, Pena, Lyon, Valverde vs Wood, Marmol, Howry and Dempster.

atta boy Hawkeye...that might be the worst lineup in the history of postseason baseball. I just wiSH IT weren't so. I just hope some snaFU CHooses to bring down the DBacks.

Or, that other guy Barrett....I blame either one, really.

censorship sure pays the bill, highest hit count yesterday that I recall seeing in a long time.

(CA) Phil I like your style. I ASSume that you wiSH IT weren't so because of all the BULLS HITters that are not in the lineup. If only we had Durham as a farm team. The only thing that would make it worse is if the Kosovo Liberation Army were to make an appearance. The troops oF U.C.K. are not big baseball fans.

d.bulls ballpark is a great place to see a game...roomy seats, great views for a 10K stadium almost everywhere (sans the evening sun setting from the OF seats on a clear day). the food, though...omfg...i think they serve better food in our prison system...

If it were this lineup, we'd win 347-0 Soriano DeRosa Lee Floyd Ramirez Soto Jones Theriot Zambrano

My stomach is in absolute knots, and we still have 3+ hours of waiting. gah.

This lineup is actually really good. For me to poop on! Ah, never gets old.

Wow…you sure it might not be partially due to the playoffs? what playoffs? kidding around, yeah the last month has been a nice swell in our readership but there was a huge spike yesterday for us.

Let's just all hope this BOST/LAA game goes by fast. If it goes late, we might miss the start of the Cubs game. Oh yeah, is COLO going to lose again this year? Man, they are RED hot.

Oh yeah, kudos to DirectTV, Comcast, Cablevision, among others for immediately picking up TBS HD. And FUCK Charter Communications (my cable company) who isn't picking it up. I am going to switch over to DirectTV in December. Chad, email me your info so I can get you a referral.

for those stuck on a computer, you can watch the games at mlb.tv It's not the full TBS broadcast though, something called TBS hot corner and you can switch different camera views. Batter/Pitcher cam or Dugout cam and then some studio shots at least it's something

FYI: The chat room is like a garage sale. People drive by, see there's nobody there, and don't stop. Stick around for a few minutes and we'll get critical mass again...

why, WHY is Ryan Theriot batting 2nd? What part of .250 in the #2 spot does Lou not understand?

I'm guessing on the lineup to be honest Bo Vandy, it could still change. Haven't seen the official announcement yet.

these "content stealing" spiders on blogs are outta control. the one above archived over 3000 articles in sept, alone and has STOLEN the content of another 1500 articles just this month. that's too much to even read even if the lazy ass owner of the blog knows how to properly use his web spiders. webmasters get all these internet "tools" and end up annoying people rather than learning how to use them correctly.

"why, WHY is Ryan Theriot batting 2nd?" Damn good question, but Lou said he was going to bat him 2nd. I guess because of his speed...which is pretty worthless if he can't get on base.

i just googled him. Looks like he likes online poker. Somehow, I doubt it's a different guy.

Jmoney2681 is a random generated name from a bank/list of names. btw, who is in the booth with stone during the bos game?

ha...there is a legit jmoney2681 out there, too...esp. on a MMA forum.

this overanxious guy in the booth with stone is a bit all over the place...esp. in his inflection and volume. steve stone is...well, he's steve stone. is that chip? seriously, who's in the booth with him. sounds a bit like chip, but on 10 cups of coffee.

Cubs/Snakes have Ron Darling/Dick Stockton Yanks/Indians have Chip/Brenley/Gwynn Rockies/Phillies get Orsillo/Simpson

"If Valverde factors greatly into the game, we’re in trouble." That guy is on fumes. I expect a total collapse in at least one game. But let's hope he never gets a chance to save a game.

I like the change in lineup....er..um....It still really sucks!

wait, did that lineup change actually happen? "see lineup change" but it's not changed above.....i like it if it's jj at 2

Not the lineup I expected. Go Cubs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet God this lineup is atrocious. In the pantheon of bad lineups this is up there with the Tryon, Nebraska Little League.

How are we supposed to win any kind of playoff game with this sorry sack line up!? Why even bother playing it out? Man.... (go cubs)

Cubs are giving their GOOD players a night off with Webb pitching. That must be it. (fingers crossed)

This lineup is the worst since the 2002-2003 Bulls with Jalen Rose, J.Williams, Marcus Fizer and Fred Hoiberg! (GO C U B S!!)

After caddying a round of golf for the Dalai Lama, Young Carlos wait's for his tip...the Lama says, "on the Mound, You will receive Total Consciousness and the strange but powerful ability to kill Snakes" Go ZEN-brano Go

Well, we have waited basically 1,448 days for the chance to get back to the playoffs and overcome those haunting memories from 2003. What time is it????????? GAME TIME!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Cubs!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow I can already tell this will be a bad broadcast. According to the play-by-play guy, Carlos had "his best year" because he "won 18 games". Did he even pay attention this season? If this is Carlos' best season, he must not be worth the money.

their whole style on TBS is pretty much like the regular season crew...its so....bland and safe with the announcers mostly hanging lowkey in the background. horrible/bland color work and a lot of just 2 pbp guy type work going on. very "80s" feel to it (only we dont get vin scully and jack buck amongst others).

Pretty even after 2 innings. Score 0-0 Z-28 pitches, Webb-24 pitches Both team with 1 hit

Another piss poor AB by Soriano. Gotta at least get Z to 3rd there. Hell, at least make some contact.

Stockton's OK on most football telecasts, and he did OK with the NBA when it was on CBS way back when. Pretty versatile, he won't screw anything up tonight.

Good question. Soriano's fly ball would have scored Theriot from third. But Z is the only Cub hitter that seems to be getting good wood on the ball.

No java on my phone so no chat for me but why doesn't Z bunt with Theriot on 2nd and no out? Jeez. Fricken stupid. He would have on Soriano ball.

Z's a .230 hitter, it was easily worth a shot. Unfortunate that it didn't work out. They'll have more chances.

RBI IF hit by Theriot, I'll take it. All tied up 1-1 heading to the bottom of the 6th.

85 pitches, he is coming back on 3 days rest his next start, bullpen is fully rested. No problem pulling Z from me.

marmol looks like he's afraid to get near the zone...after that dong, i don't blame him.

The more I think about it Ron Galt, you are right, it was a little early. Lou should worry about Game 4 when we get there. He only had 85 pitches and and could have easily gotten in 1+ more innings. Now that Marmol gave up the dinger, it makes you even more correct.

FUCK!!!! 3-1. Well, Marmol's regular season 1.43 ERA is out the window. I am surprised Lou did not walk Jackson with 1st open to set up force at home.

boy...3-1 staring at a must-win against a real cub killer in Davis. dicey.

Bob Melvin calls the take your starter out too early bet. Decent idea on his part not to take any chances.

Well doesn't that just fucking suck. Getting jacked up by a group of piece of shit hitters. Scratch out one fucking run. Son of a bitch. Damn it. Just fuck it. Nice fucking job.

But he got an extra inning out of his starter and had to PH for him, so he had no choice really but to pull him in that situation. Lou pulled Z by choice.

Isn't that the truth. Wait, is Dick F. Stockton really calling this game? Cubs need a three pointer or something.

That's right, forgot about the PH... my mind's only about 30% on the game, obviously. Valverde's not invincible, hopefully Soto, Theriot and ??? can make something happen.

1 out in the 9th...we made it too easy tonight and I think Valverde is going to be their big strength in the series. I don't have a problem taking out Z in the 7th...Marmol has succeeded many many times in that spot this year no reason to think he wouldn't tonight. Gotta go get em in game 2.

Cubs lose 3-1...FUCK!!!!!!! Cubs down 1-0 is short series, making tomorrow almost must win. Augie Fucking Ojeda!!!!!!! Piss poor display on offense. I know it was Webb, but still not pretty. Lilly is really good this year after a loss, so hopefully he can pitch well, but this team needs to score some runs. Go Cubs!!!

Can someone write me a phony "note from my doctor" so I can be out sick tomorrow, and skip the full day of bullshit from co-workers?

must be hugely deflating to the club when your lights-out set-up guy chokes like Marmol tonight. let's see how resilient they are...

Three tough decisions by Lou that one can go back and easily second guess, or first guess. All 3 turned out bad for the Cubs. 1) Not bunting Theriot over to third with Z with 0 out in the 5th. Soriano hit a deep enough fly to CF next AB. Cubs end up stranding Theriot. 2) Pulling Z after 6. Marmol comes in and give us a HR to first batter and a total of 2 runs in the 7th. 3) Not IBB Jackson with 1B open and 1 out in the 7th to set up DP or force at home. Jackson hits SF to add an insurance run. Lou did not lose this game for the Cubs, the Cubs lack of offense was the main culprit, but these decisions turned out not to help. Gotta play better tomorrow...

Manny: Like Dusty would have done better. You load the bases to get to Chris Young, I don't think so.

*Three tough decisions by Lou that one can go back and easily second guess, or first guess. All 3 turned out bad for the Cubs.* Don't forget to blame Hendry for letting go that offensive juggernaut, Augie Ofuckingjeda.

This is how the Diamondbacks have won games all year. It doesn't work nearly as well when Webb isn't starting, which is happily the case for the next couple games. Not a lot to be ashamed of tonight; Webb's one of the best. A lot of people, myself included, thought the Cubs would lose this game and win the series. Tomorrow (obviously, at this point) is the crucial game.

(CA) Phil: "You load the bases to get to Chris Young, I don’t think so." Yeah that .237 batting average and .295 on base percentage and 141 K's this year is really scary.

*Gut told me earlier today at work: Lose tonight, then win the next three.* Ha! They've just set themselves up to get swept, losing at home to one of the zillion-year old Hernandez brothers on Saturday. Lovely.

When the first five in the Cubs lineup go 1 for 20 thats not exactly a winning combo. Gosh Ojeda!

Maybe that .238 hitting piece-of-shit Webb will hit another homer and point at the sky afterward--was that a slap at Zambo or what?

32 HR Manny...we can agree Cubs better get it together tomorrow..I'm with Ron Galt, Webb just beat us.

I think 1 & 3 are complete non issues. Zambrano is a good hitter, Webb is a strikeout/groundball pitcher....bunting him over does not by any stretch mean that he would have scored. 3 you don't load the bases for Young as already noted. 2. This is a big issue. Seems like Lou was playing for game 4 in game 1 by pulling Z an inning early. But e lost because we couldn't score runs against great pitchers. I think we all under rate the importance of game 1 in a 5 game series. Now we have zero margin of error if we don't want Webb to pitch in an elimination game against us.

one for 20 for top five ,gee how much are they making combined, i really thought soto would come through with big knock. oh well must win tomorrow

The Cubs had plenty of scoring opportunities they just did not execute or hit the ball when needed. Webb was beatable.

Lou on now...admits that he considered the 3 day rest for Z, and likes his bullpen, reasons he pulled him.

block: "3 you don’t load the bases for Young as already noted." But Young has a really good chance of striking out there. Marmol is a K specialist and Young is a guy who can't hit and K's a lot. In that situation the Cubs needed to do everything they can to stop an insurance run from scoring. Like I said it is just one of only 3 moves that could be questioned, IMO. A case can be made supporting Lou in all 3, but the fact is they all didn't go his way.

Well, I certainly expected us to lose this game. Now, we have a large pitching advantage the next two games, so I see a 2-1 advantage going into the 4th game. There? Eh, I'd certainly rather have Z on 3 days rest then Marquis, despite not really trusting Z. Soriano though needs to not go into one of his month long slumps.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.
