Gabor's Revenge and Other Rumors

This was probably posted in the comments, but also said that once the Heilman deal is finished - which will clear a spot on the 40-man roster - the Cubs will sign on a one year, $750K contract.

The Cubs are also said to be weighing offers on ...err, , and looking at adding another bench player such as that could cover 2B, SS, 3B and possibly 1B. The Cub seem determined to make it virtually impossible for to make the team out of camp.

And if this Peavy deal doesn't happen, the Cubs may try and sign or , to try and make it virtually impossibe for to break with the team. A good way to keep his service time down I suppose. Of course, I think odds are high will be doing the -spring-training-DL-trip around March 20th routine because he wasn't quite ready when spring training began.

I would like to see them give Harden all the time he needs to come back as healthy as he is ever going to be. We need him to provide a boost toward the end of the season, into the playoffs. If he is not ready at the beginning of spring training, plug someone else in there for awhile...

Of course. So it will be like, "getting a new player at the deadline", right?

Exactly! We won't even need to make a trade! (ducks)

Braden Looper and Randy Wolf? Those are the perfect guys to help us win the Central Division...... in 2002

Gabor's Revenge? Isn't that what you get from drinking bad water in, like, Serbia?

Jason Marquis, career 4.55 4.39 96 1.425 Era lg era+ whip Braden Looper, career 3.93 4.28 109 1.350 Umm..., I can think of a lot worse pitchers than Looper for a #5, Aaron B. Why are you thumbing your nose at him? What kind of Dr. are you?

I, for one, was stunned at the success Looper had when he switched to starting. That's a guy who hadn't started a game since A ball, and he was able to put 2 years together with 30 starts. Suprisingly durable. And even pretty effective for a back of the rotation guy, too.

Indeed. As I say, you can do a helluva lot worse.

1. Because I want Peavy on this team 2. Dave Duncan ain't coming with Looper 3. He has had ERA's of 4.94 and 4.19 as a starter and has yet to pitch 200 ip 4. He strikes out less than 5 per 9. 5. It seems like a Jeromy Burnitz instead of Carlos Beltran type of move

Hendry is doing the same thing he's done the last 3 years...loading up on as many pitchers as possible, even though there doesn't seem to be room for all of them. Inevitably someone gets hurt in camp or shits their pants and it all magically works out. A little part of me wants to see them move Vizcaino and have Heilman in the bullpen with Gregg and Marmol.

So, then, Wade Miller could could get a NRI to ST? (chuckles)

probably a high chance of heilman getting to start. stamina...control over his change up (and missing OUT of the zone if he's gonna miss...a BIG problem of his)...that's the concerns, imo. i like his stuff...great change, decent fastball(s).

Why not put Heilman or Marshall in the 5th spot if you cant get Peavy and use any extra money we have to try to lure the O-dog to town? Is it just too logical?

Who is the O dog?

Orlando Hudson?

I noticed among the few numbers unassigned to the Cubs players this Spring is #44. Jake Peavy wears #44 for the Padres. Coincidence? Maybe not.

No, that's definitely a coincidence.

I laughed really hard at that. Wes sent sound man-giggle.

Chad should know...

Takes one to know one. OMG!!11 PWN3DASAURUS!!!!111ONE! ROFLCOPTER!

talk about 3/44.

I noticed among the few numbers unassigned to the Cubs players this Spring is #44. Jake Peavy wears #44 for the Padres. Coincidence? Maybe not. ------- No #44? Hendry's theme this offseason is to swap out Hank's and accumulate Aaron's.

Boers and Bernstein this afternnon on WSCR were discussing a recent study called "pitcher abuse index for 2008" (sorry, can't find the link at the moment), and guess who was #1 and #2? Marmol and Heilman. Egads.

They need to get Dusty Baker on the phone. Ask him: 1. What is a Pitcher Abuse index? 2. How is it calculated 3. How do you manage with such knowledge at your disposal 4. What do you plan on changing as far as your managing style, now that we have PAI's?

I think they should go with this version of the stadium. Clean lines. None of those messy and unnecessary seat things.

personally I think it needs a horse or dog track going around the outside of it...

world's most fun group waterslide. awesome.

How are they gonna cram all those Marlins fans into that place?

Why? Does it only seat 75 people?

I just realized I'll get to root for Cedeno here in Seattle. Wahoo! Interleague games will be a blast.

with jose lopez at 2nd i dunno wtf seattle wants with cedeno...still, from their end they're getting 2 cheap parts with upside even if the pitching part isn't as complete as heilman.

The Mariners don't deal in intelligent planning. They just do stuff. There's good food at the ballpark, though. Maybe they just wanted Olson and Cedeno came along for the ride. I hope I see him downtown someday.

Mariners food? Sushi? Espresso? Crabmeat? Not-dogs?

I think there's sushi. Haven't had it. Fish, Chicken, (real) Hot Dogs, Nachos. Like regular ballpark stuff plus seafood.

They have sushi. I have a buddy who is a Mariners fan and is from Seattle. He confirmed this to be true as recently as this weekend.

IIRC, doesn't Dodger's Stadium have sushi? I found it odd my last visit to the lovely, yet grey and depressing Seattle (like Chi in the winter, except rain instead of snow/cold) that they have two large-capacity stadiums right next to each other. What's up with that? How did the County approve this? A nice football stadium right next to a baseball-only park.

No idea. They were both here when I moved here. I haven't really thought about it.

I have yet to see any sushi at Dodger's Stadium. Now if you can get it in the sky boxes, that doesn't count.

This lefty fetish has gone too far.

Didn’t take long for Cubbery to show up early in this matchup

I wouldn’t have minded starting Willson in left field and let Caratini catch Yu - they seem to be more on the same page.

(CNN) The 2-year-old girl struck by a foul ball last month during a Chicago Cubs' game against the Astros in Houston sustained a fracture skull, subdural bleeding, brain contusions and a brain edema, the family's attorney said Wednesday.

Attorney Steve Polotko said Wednesday that the girl had a seizure at the hospital and has to take medicine to prevent more seizures. She is still recovering at home from her injuries, he said.

...we are gonna have so much net over so many parks next season.

Interesting. They also dropped Happ to fifth in the lineup yesterday (Garcia was sixth) - Happ had been batting mostly third in the order.

  • QuietMan 2 hours 11 min ago (view)

Garcia starting in LF tonight for ICubs.  Seeing if that's an option I guess.

Thanks, Phil!  Also think calling Garcia up could cause Happ to go nuts - they seem to have similar profiles (power hitting switch hitters who K frequently), though Happ can at least be adequate in the outfield defensively.  Read an article in the Athletic this week about Cubs efforts to instill both A (launch angle) and B (flatter) swings in Happ depending on situation — still a long way to go apparently.

ERIC S: While I think the Cubs would probably like to trade both Mike Montgomery and Tyler Chatwood, the most-likely of the two to get traded this year is Montgomery, just because Chatwood's contract makes him virtually untradeable right now, and Montgomery could be a SP on a team that needs one (like OAK, LAA, or AZ).

Vimael Machin is having a fine season at AA but I don't think he would be a call-up candidate in 2019 until he gets moved-up to AAA and then stays there for a while.

  • Eric S 6 hours 46 min ago (view)

AZ Phil - Do you think it more likely than not one of either Montgomery or Chatwood is traded by the end of the July deadline?

Also, Robel Garcia is the current hot name for a potential callup to help out at second base. Do you think Vimael Machin would also be considered?  Machin has only 3 homers (compared to Garcia’s 20) but has 18 doubles and appears to not have a significant swing and miss aspect to his game that Garcia has — could be the Cubs could use Machin’s on-base skill moreso than Garcia’s power.

I suspect Adbert Alzolay gets optioned back to AAA when Kimbrel is recalled, and then the Cubs go with a nine-man bullpen (and 14 pitchers) when Edwards is reinstated from the IL, with Cargo or Descalso getting the DFA.

K-DUB: I have seen Manuel Espinoza pitch: mediocre 87-90 MPH FB, plus-CH, solid CV, and outstanding command.

I have mentioned this before, but Espinoza was signed by the Cubs on the same day and by the same Area Scout in July 2017 as fellow Mexican RHP Florencio Serrano Jr, and like Serrano, Espinoza's contract was investigated by MLB. And also like Serrano, Espinoza missed the entire 2018 season while his contract was being investigated.
