Gameday Open Thread/Cubs @ Rangers

Ted Lilly will start for the Cubs before heading off to Team USA. The Rangers will start Scott Feldman.

SS Ryan Theriot, CF Reed Johnson, 1B Micah Hoffpauir, DH Jason Dubois,
C Geovany Soto, 2B Mike Fontenot, LF Doug Deeds, 3B Luis Rivas, RF So

Gosh, that lineup blows. I hope Doug "Dirty" Deeds makes the team. I want to hear the organist play a little AC/DC.

TheRiot goes 2-3 with a 2B, R...mark it down.

Extra-base hit for Theriot? Bold prediction.

Oh well, missed it by that much.

Scott Eyre having money problems

Isn't this 3/44 by now?

Dr. says "document not found". I suspect that's the same message Eyre gets when he tries to look up his portfolio online.

yep, that's the point. every day.

It was the point. Kinda a new 3/44 if you will. That being said, I will cease and desist from linking Stevie Ires financial troubles. Carry on

In hindsight, 3/44 for Jason Schmidt was a terrible idea. Good thing it fell through.

Given Eyre's financial situation, isn't it like 3/00?

no radio today, huh?

Dubois as a DH? Never mind that that's about all he should ever try to be in MLB. Does Lou really have noone else to stick into the lineup?

just from reading the boxscore: Theriot singles, out stealing 2nd. Johnson out. Hoffpauir and Dubois single, Soto walks.Bags loaded. Fontenot K's. ...that's how Ronald Regan did it.

Dear Ryan Theriot,

Stop trying to steal bases.

February and March are fine times for Theriot to try to steal bases. But in the regular season he'll need to be successful more than 65% of the time.

and the magnificent Theodore Roosevelt Lilly on the mound... Duran K's. Third baseman Young singles. Josh Hamilton out. Andruw Jones K's. end 1st.

Deeds, Rivas, Taguchi... terror grows in the opposing pitchers heart.

On cue, they put together the first scoring inning. Bradley sent home feeling ill and quad still sore, won't play this weekend. Harden to face hitters on Saturday...Cubs hitters, no games yet. Piniella likes Cashner so far...doesn't think he'll spend much time in the minors. Peavy vs. Dempster on Sunday.

"Harden to face hitters on Saturday...Cubs hitters, no games yet." Ye Gods! That means at some point Harden might pitch to Bradley? That'd be the injury equivalent of the Ghostbusters crossing the streams........people in a 50-mile radius would have their right arm fall off and then they'd have to limp after it. Out to 100 miles the entire population would go on the DL.

This sore quad has got to be a fucking joke. Seriously, already? I'm a Hendry guy, but I just can't get excited about Bradley's chances of living up to his contract.

Extra long spring training. He could sit out the first two weeks and it wouldn't matter much at all. Maybe that has been figured into the decision for him to sit out the weekend.

You can spin it however you want, but it is what it is. The Cub's biggest off-season acquisition has a quad injury. Maybe it will be better by opening day, maybe it won't.

I'm not really disagreeing, I just hate to hear this pessimism so early in the season, er, pre-season. Let's wait until at least the second week of March. I'm still ecstatic that there is baseball. I'm psyched about the WBC, if only because the games will be televised. From December through February I wonder why I still have cable.

flood gates open... Fontenot two-run HR, Hoff-power three-run HR, Deeds hit a triple... 7-0 heading to the bottom of the 2nd.

I love this lineup.

Here's to hoping Hoff-power's bat stays hot enough that Lou has to put him on the Opening Day roster. And that Fontenot wins the starting 2B gig.

So, Lilly looks pretty decent. Maybe he's not such a strange choice to play for team USA.

J.R. Mathes gives up a run...Lou tells him to run a lap.

Lou and Rob hate pitchers.

thirty first!

and the beat writers get to sink their teeth in...

Would it surprise anyone of Kosuke was back in RF on opening day?

well that would be the end of the season right there...

Manny's still available?

it doesn't matter, if Bradley isn't playing on opening Day of a 6-month season, the season is over...

Berg with a scoreless inning...2 K's, 2 BB's

Campusano with a scoreless inning...2 BB's, 0 K's Godenot with a triple, 2 more RBI

Fontegod another half slab of ribs... 9-2, bottom 7.

andruw jones 0-3, 3 K's... lookin' good..

Laugh all you want, but if Johnson turns into a pumpkin Jones in a Cubby uniform may not be that far fetched.

I suppose anything is possible, but I doubt it. Jones isn't even hitting lefties and his defense is pretty much average the last 4 years.

The only reason Andruw Jones is still in baseball is because his name is Andruw Jones.

then of course Jim Edmonds figured out how to upper-cut his way into a decent season last year, so who knows...

Um.. I don't see that as even remotely likely... The Jones-in-a-Cub-Uniform part... Where is your logic for that argument?

Rob just outlined it for you.

I'm glad to see Fuld tag one with Piniella watching. I'm not sure Lou has seen Fuld hit a ball. Apparently he's not just a singles hitter. He slugged .513 in 200 at bats in Venezuela this winter. He also put up those crazy numbers in the AFL in '07. He doesn't hit for average but his OBP is always high with lots of walks. Our regular center fielder is no bargain, so Fuld is interesting.

Roquet gets rocked, Stevens and Mateo with scoreless innings... 10-4 win. Cubs own the Cactus League scrubs. B.  Webb down with a sore forearm to join Johann's sore elbow.

who cares about bradley's sore thigh? Just play everyday in october and play pissed off.

I understand why it feels unsettling. I remember the series well (though I, unlike Theo, actually was in high school). Anyway, I view it as a chance to right previous wrongs in the same way we stomped StL out of the playoffs in 2015, or the way the Nationals got to burn through two teams last year that had dumped them out of October in previous seasons.

But if we lose, of course that was 17 years ago so it's two extremely different organizations.

DJL: All players on Optional Assignment to the minors must be recalled on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, even if the player has not spent at least ten days on Optional Assignment. Players cannot be optioned to the minors again until Spring Training.

CHAMP: No option year is spent just by calling up a player to MLB. An option year is spent only if a player on an MLB 40-man roster is optioned to the minors for at least 20 days in a given season.

Also, Brailyn Marquez is (was) eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft in December, so the Cubs were going to add him to the 40 on 11/20 anyway. They just did it a couple of months early.

Not sure if serious, but Theo became the Red Sox GM in 2002. It's true though, there probably aren't many people in the organization besides Ricketts and Crane Kenney who have any strong feelings about that series.

I wonder if anyone on the Cubs cares or even remembers the odd events when the Marlins played the Cubs in 2003. I think Theo was in high school. To this old fart it will be more than a little unsettling to watch this post-season match-up. At least we can be fairly certain there will no fans grabbing for foul balls.

Which is kind of annoying. Nobody really picked the Cubs to win this division pre-season. I guess Mattingly gets some credit for guiding the Marlins through their positives but even just letting them play that one game with half the team sick should knock him out of consideration. Meanwhile Ross kept a tight ship and the Cubs has no positives all year. I'd say Ross or Tingler should get it over Mattingly.

cubs finish 34-26 (1st, division)...they play MIA on wednesday.

good start for d.ross, but the manager of the year is most likely going to d.mattingley (MIA) or j.tingler(SD).

...or he won't make it out of the 8th

    0.2ip 2h 3bb 1k, 5r/er...2 wild pitches

there's some great stuff in that arm.  mid/high-80s slider, "changeup" around 90mph, fastball 97-99mph...all effortless.  21 years old and never pitched above A-ball.

rough debut...doubt we're going to see him in the 9th.

  • Charlie 16 hours 20 min ago (view)

Reminds me a little of Jeff Samardzija's debut. Adrenaline throwing straight gas but all over the place. Samardzija threw a fastball all the way to the backstop in his debut (2008).

  • crunch 16 hours 23 min ago (view)

back to back 3-2 count 6-pitch walks.

he's not in the zone.  he's throwing almost totally fastballs, too.

  • crunch 16 hours 23 min ago (view)

alzolay's gotta be locked in for a start given what he's done lately.

i wonder what role j.lester will be given.  if he's starting, hopefully he's the 3rd/4th starter, if at all.  someone will probably give him a 2021 contract if he doesn't retire...hope it's not the cubs giving that contract, though.

  • crunch 16 hours 27 min ago (view)

dude's thrown a 97mph and 98mph fastball to start and both looked like he was barely expending effort.

unfortunately, neither were near the plate.

  • Charlie 16 hours 29 min ago (view)

So, Alzolay gets at least one October start, right? He'd be a weapon out of the pen if the Cubs had more than two believable starters ready.

    Q goes 2 effective (2ip 2h 1bb 2k, 0r/er) and here comes b.marquez...
