Giants Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Dos Victorias at Fitch Park

The Giants swept the Cubs by scores of 3-1 and 2-1 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training Cinco de Mayo doubleheader this morning at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Both games were pre-scheduled as seven-inning contests, but the game on Field #2 was extended an extra half-inning so that Alvido Jimenez could throw a second inning.

Cubs 2011 1st round draft pick SS Javier Baez left the game on Field #3 after being hit on the left arm by a pitch in the bottom of the 1st inning.

In EXST Cubs roster news, SS Junior Lake (back strain) completed his rehab assignment yesterday and has left Arizona, (presumably) en route to join the Tennessee Smokies in Sevierville.

Also, INF Luis Acosta, 3B (ex-C) Mark Malave, LF-RF Delbis Arcila, and catcher Antonio Valerio have been sent back to the Cubs Dominican Academy in Boca Chica, DR.

Acosta and Malave are just 17-years old, and both received $1M+ signing bonuses during the International Signing Period last summer. Acosta murders fastballs but needs to learn how to hit a breaking ball (totally clueless), and the beefy switch-hitting Malave (the more-advanced hitter of the two) needs lots of reps at 3B.

It'll be interesting to see how Concepcion does tonight. A lot of people are freaking out about his first two outings, without considering what a culture shock it is to be signed to a multimillion dollar contract and play in minor league shanty towns, which are not in much better shape than many third world country towns are, with very few guys on his team with his experiences from a political standpoint. I'm thinking his third time out is the charm. But, as often happens, I may need to hit the strike button. Oh, look. I would have to do some html editing in the post to do that. So never mind.

and Rizzo doubles in the bottom of the 3rd for a 1-0 Iowa lead, scoring Randy Wells who had walked. BJax also had a double to lead off in the 1st. so far Wells has 3 shutout innings with 4 hits, 2 BB, 3K's. Still playing with fire.

Am I reading right that Concepcion gave up 7 runs in the first inning? His numbers are almost impossibly bad. Like you couldn't give up as many runs as he does if the ball was literally on a tee. Wow. And I still want a Concepcion jersey ... Damn

Hey Phil- was wondering if you could comment on the hitters at extended spring training regarding their propensity to strikeout. Looking back at the stats you posted the other day plus those above and it really seems like these guys are all a bunch of hackers. I guess I was expecting the new "Cubs way" to be forcing guys to take more pitches and walk more but that does not seem to be the case. Do you think they are pushing patience or are these players just really aggressive in the box? I guess it is an age old debate- patience is something you have and do not. It is really hard to be taught it.

CACUBFAN: There are a few patient hitters at EXST like Anthony Giansanti, Garrett Schlecht, Gioskar Amaya, Trevor Gretzky, and Dan Vogelbach, but even Vogelbach seems to be a bit over-anxious lately, although that's probably because he has been struggling. I really haven't noticed any change in general hitting philosophy related to Cubs hitters at EXST trying to be more selective or patient. Most of them are aggressive hackers, just like every year. And the most extreme example is Javier Baez. In 97 Plate Appearances between AZL Cubs, Boise, and AZ Instructs last season, and Extended Spring Training this year, Javier Baez has NO WALKS, and 29 strikeouts. The strikeouts are somewhat understandable because he is a big-time power hitter with extraordinary bat speed, but NO WALKS? In 97 Plate Appearances? In other words, his next walk will be his first walk.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
