Cubs & Giants Leave Things Tied at Indian School Park

Rock Shoulders drilled an RBI double and scored a run to highlight a two-run Cub 1st inning, and Rob Whitenack (2011 TJS rehab) threw five innings (60 pitches) of one-run ball, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Indian School Park Field #4 in Scottsdale, AZ.

Scott Maine ends up being optioned with Blake Parker's call-up.

A sober thought from old Bourbon

at least the guy knows quality when he sees it...this time.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball... The team psychologist, Dr. Marc Strickland, was involved in the workouts wearing Cubs' sweats, observing Garza's throws from a few feet away with his arms crossed. When asked if Garza'a throwing problem was "mental" on Wednesday, Sveum replied: "I'm not a psychologist."

Love it. "I don't want to answer the question 'is the problem mental?' so I'll answer a totally different question, instead."

Is his bunting problem mental? Hitting too?

So the Ricketts are getting involved in the wrong side of politics. Effing wonderful.

old news for the old man...this time he stepped in "it" up to his ankles, though.

soto late scratch (knee), welly in tonight.

Any idea what kind of injury it is (whether serious or not)? Cubs low on catching depth, though I think Clevenger is supposed to be back in a week or so.

Soto has left knee inflammation. Supposed to be day to day. Aren't we all.

Hah, you got that right.

Time for Volstad to go figure it out in Des Moines (sorry to be foisting him upon you, Mike Wellman). Unfortunately, not many starters with MLB experience throwing well down there--maybe bring Travis Wood back?

him or Casey Coleman.

Not watching the game - stuck with game day - Did Volstadt leave so early cuz he got shelled again? Or did he get hurt? EDIT: Volstad. But he looks like a Volstadt.

mega-shelled. it was all downhill after the h.pence K in the 1st. it was all walks, deep counts, and singles...but too many of all of them.

Too bad. I had some mild hope for the guy. He can go to the minors and join the other guy who we gave up a good pitcher for. Not that Z hadn't worn out his welcome. But the two can commiserate about the lousy return they've given TheoCorp so far.

he's got awesome stuff and isn't giving up the longball as much, but the hits are productive and the walks aren't helping things. it's not getting any better so far this year. boo-hiss.

I'll be glad to see Volstad moved to long relief since he's been almost a sure loss for both the Marlins in '11 and Cubs in '12... I'm thinking Travis Wood has more upside than Coleman as a starter. Time to start shuffling the deck. I'm hoping that Blake Parker gets off to a good start, the bullpen could use a boost.

Blake Parker's wearing Koyie Hill's uniform number (55). Excellent, Probably adds 5mph to his fastball.

s.castro hits his 2nd homer.

The I-Cubs beat the Salt Lake City Bees, 7-5. Seems like a nice outing for Travis Wood: 7IP, 2 Runs, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR. Manny Corpas gave up 3 runs in the 9th to make the game closer than it really was. Rizzo with a 2 run HR (#14), avg at .359; BJax batting 6th had 3 hits including a triple and a HR (#4) although his avg is only .241. Josh Vitters also had a HR (#4).

8-7 phi/cubs...comeback in the 9th...ready for heartbreak.

heartbreak delivered...phi wins.

Phil, Is there any way you can update us on Javier Baez's stats thus far? Thanks so much!

Still haven't seen/heard if Cubs signed 19th rd Daniel Avitia, the last of the unsigned or declined.

imagine he'll go into indie ball somewhere and hope he doesn't end up like matt harrington.

So is Kumar going "pro" by taking a KBO contract next season or something like that or does he just work out for a year?  Not sure what the rules are for a player in his situation.

    Good. Suck it Mets

    mets fail to sign k.rocker.

at the time it was considered a hell of a pick when he fell so far (11th pick).  he was considered a top-5 pick for most of the year, #1 for a chunk of it.  his medicals (elbow) gave the mets pause offering him slot value.  his agent, boras, says he's healthy.

he will not return to vandy and will go "pro"...he returns to the draft next year and the mets get a compensation 11th pick in round 1 next season.

Winning very much to a backseat to profits. I would imagine it always kinda was that way, but it became very obvious after the title. I think when ownership saw Darvish struggle year one, that was that, no more free agent spending. And never adjusted after it became clear Darvish was back starting midway through year two.

Ownership absolutely decided sometime after 2016 that fans owed them and not the other way atound.

To be fair they also did a good job bringing in talent to the system that they were able to use to make trades. And a few solid signings such as Lester and Zobrist.

I think part of it was the hunger mostly vanished after the title and things needed to be switched up to kick people in the ass a tad. Add a level of being hamstrung by Heyward deal, no one coming up to replace the lost farm system talent or aging players, no one but Rizzo and Hendricks signing extensions, and here we are

Rizzo leading off for Yanks today

the cubs had years of 1st round picks gained by tanking do well and they got very lucky with the arrietta/strop trade.  strop is especially underappreciated in that trade.  theo obviously wanted rizzo badly, and made the right call there.  hendricks was a complex back/forth trade because of player injuries, but at the end of the day the cubs wanted hendricks and they made the right call there, too.

aside from that, it looks a lot like it's been for decades.
