2017 Season Game Thread

Cubs @ Reds: Lackey vs Bailey (Game 124)

CHC (66-57): RHP John Lackey (10-9, 4.67)
CIN (53–72): RHP Homer Bailey (4-6, 8.44)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

This is a repeat of last week’s matchup. Lackey limited the Reds to one run over 6 innings but came away with a no-decision and ended his five-game winning streak. The Cubs would go on to win 7-6, when Baez scored on Wood’s wild pitch.

Blue Jays @ Cubs: Estrada vs Hendricks (Game 123)

TOR (59-64): RHP Marco Estrada (5-8, 5.09)
CHC (65-57): RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.45)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hendricks pitched well (6 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 4 BB) but ended up with a no-decision on Tuesday against the Reds. He last won a game on May 24 (against the Giants). Toronto is 3-16 (.188) against him. Pillar and Pearce are both 1-2, and Aoki is 1-5 with a HR.

Blue Jays @ Cubs: Tepesch vs Quintana (Game 122)

TOR (59-63): RHP Nick Tepesch (1-2, 5.25)
CHC (64-57): LHP José Quintana (7-10, 4.33)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Quintana gave up 1 ER in 5 innings to win against the Reds on Monday. He beat these Jays in June, as a member of the White Sox (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB). Overall, they are 42-149 (.282) against him. Morales is 14-41 with 3 HR, and Pearce is 5-11 with 2 HR.

Blue Jays @ Cubs: Happ vs Arrieta (Game 121)

TOR (59-62): LHP J. A. Happ (6-8, 3.63)
CHC (63-57): RHP Jake Arrieta (12-8, 3.73)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

The Cubs and Jays have only played four series (2003, '05, '08, and '14). This will be the second appearance by the Jays at Wrigley, other than 2005—a rare sighting, indeed. The Jays lead the franchise matchup 8-4.

Reds @ Cubs: Feldman vs Lester (Game 120)

CIN (50-71): RHP Scott Feldman (7-7, 4.43)
CHC (63-56): LHP Jon Lester (8-7, 3.99)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

I don't know if Elias has weighed in, but I'm guessing that last night's game was the first in history to start off with a home-team no-out grand slam and end on a wild pitch walk-off to break a tie. To invoke crunch: neat. Also, hats off to Maddon for remembering that sometimes you need to take one for the team and get tossed.

Reds @ Cubs: Bailey vs Lackey (Game 119)

CIN (50-70): RHP Homer Bailey (4-6, 8.31)
CHC (62-56): RHP John Lackey (10-9, 4.82)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Lackey won his fifth straight start on Friday in Arizona. He’s 1-1 with a 6.35 in his two starts against the Reds this season. Overall, they are 56-188 (.298) against him. Cozart is 7-18 with 2 HR, and Gennett is 9-24 with a HR.

Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Lester vs Corbin (Game 115)

CHC (60-54): LHP Jon Lester (8-6, 3.97)
AZ (64-51): LHP Patrick Corbin (8-11, 4.76)
First pitch: 8:10pmCST

Lester gave up 3 ER in 4 innings for a no-decision against the D’backs on Wrigley earlier this month. His last outing was a no-decision against the Nationals on Sunday (6 IP, 3 ER, 7 K, 1 BB). Overall, the D’backs are 20-75 (.267) against him. Goldschmidt is 5-8 with a HR. He’s good.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
