2017 Season Game Thread

Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Lackey vs Walker (Game 114)

CHC (59-54): RHP John Lackey (9-9, 4.81)
AZ (64-50): RHP Taijuan Walker (6-5, 3.60)
First pitch: 8:40pmCST

Lackey gave up 2 ER in 5 innings against the Nationals on Saturday, to win his fourth straight start. He hasn’t lost since June 28. The Diamondbacks are 14-63 (.222) against him. Goldschmidt is 3-8 with a HR.

Cubs @ Giants: Hendricks vs Bumgarner (Game 113)

CHC (59-53): RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.81)
SF (45-70): LHP Madison Bumgarner (1-5, 2.88)
First pitch: 2:45pmCST

Hendricks gave up 3 ER in 7 innings and lost to the Nationals on Friday. He beat the Giants at Wrigley in May (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB). Overall, the Giants are 12-48 (.250) against him. Pence is 2-2.

Cubs @ Giants: Arrieta vs Moore (Game 111)

CHC (58-52): RHP Jake Arrieta (10-8, 3.88)
SF (44-69): LHP Matt Moore (3-11, 5.80)
First pitch: 9:00pmCST

A trip out west—what could go wrong?

Arrieta gave up 1 ER in 7 innings against the D’backs on Wednesday, but it's hard to win a game when your team doesn't score any runs. Overall, the Giants are 15-78 (.192) against him. The Prodigal Panda is 3-6 with a HR.

Nationals @ Cubs: Fedde vs Lester (Game 110)

WAS (64-44): RHP Erick Fedde (0-1, 15.75)
CHC (58-51): LHP Jon Lester (8-6, 3.96)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lester gave up 3 ER in 4 innings (and hit a HR-wtf?!) for a no-decision in the 16-4 blowout of the D’backs on Tuesday. The Nats are 41-184 (.223) against him. Wieters is 16-49.

Fedde got knocked around by the Rockies in Washington for his MLB-debut last week (4 IP, 7 ER, 3 K, 2 BB). He was 4-4 with a 3.72 in the minors before his call up. No word on how Dusty plans to blow out his arm.

Nationals @ Cubs: Jackson vs Lackey (Game 109)

WAS (64-43): RHP Edwin Jackson (2-1, 3.75)
CHC (57-51): RHP John Lackey (8-9, 4.87)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

The good news is we get to face Edwin Jackson. The bad news is that there’s a very real possibility that this team will not beat Edwin Jackson. At least we’re not still paying him.

Nationals @ Cubs: Roark vs Hendricks (Game 108)

WAS (63-43): RHP Tanner Roark (8-7, 4.93)
CHC (57-50): RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-3, 3.80)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hendricks gave up 1 ER in 5 innings in Milwaukee on Saturday but ended up with a no-decision in a game the Cubs won 2-1. The Nationals are 15-69 (.217) against him. Harper is 3-10 with a HR.

Roark lost to the Rockies his last time out (5 IP, 4 ER, 8 K, 4 BB). He’s 5-2 with a 4.34 on the road this season. The Cubs are 11-55 (.200) against him. Bryant is 4-8 with a HR, and Rizzo is 4-15 with 2 HR. Heyward is 0-15.

Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Greinke vs Quintana (Game 107)

AZ (61-46): RHP Zack Greinke (13-4, 2.84)
CHC (57-49): LHP José Quintana (6-9, 4.16)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Quintana gave up 2 ER in 6 innings and ended up with the loss in Milwaukee on Friday. Overall, the D’backs are 24-81 (.296) against him. Martinez, the former Tiger, is 9-28.

Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Godley vs Arrieta (Game 106)

AZ (60-46): RHP Zack Godley (4-4, 3.06)
CHC (57-48): RHP Jake Arrieta (10-7, 4.30)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Arrieta gave up 2 ER in 6.2 innings to win on the South Side on Wednesday. He went 3-1 with a 2.25 in July—by far his best month in a while. Overall, Arizona is 23-100 (.230) against him. Goldschmidt is 4-13 with a HR. Brito is 2-4 with a HR—and his name is Socrates.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
