I don’t post much anymore but I had a great vantage point for Horton’s Triple A debut so thought I’d share my non-scout’s eye view/impression. I was in the photographer booth adjacent to the home dugout. After a routine 1st he was pacing in the dugout, never sat down, tossing those soft weighted balls off the back wall, amped up, restless, prowling. Maybe a Red Bull/adrenaline cocktail, who knows. But he couldn’t wait to get back on the mound. The first pitch in the top of the 2nd was lined to left for a base hit. Then he couldn’t find the plate. Four walks, wild pitched a run in. The first two outs were warning track fly balls that woulda been gone if not for a brisk wind blowing in. Veteran catcher Curt Casali went to the mound to settle him, to no avail. Somebody got up in the bullpen. When he finally got out of it he’d thrown more balls (26) than strikes (20). This time he sat down in the dugout. No one came near. Until, after a couple of minutes, some old coach sat down next to him. He talked, Cade nodded. Back out for the 3rd he was a different pitcher. Fanned the side on 12 pitches, only 2 balls. Moxie. As for details, like I said, I’m no scout. 94 was the top velo I noticed on the board. And he got quite a few hapless swings & misses on his slider @ 87. This was his first outing in a week. The I-Cubs are halfway through a two-week home stand so I look forward to seeing his next start too. I suspect it will be much like this one, minus the 2nd inning burp of wildness and misplaced composure.

AZ Phil - Thanks for all that you do for us! I love everything you post, but these extended spring stats are kinda cool to read through each year. I enjoy seeing what positions players are trying out or settling into. Which players seem advanced for these lower level pitchers, and which might still need more time before heading over to Myrtle Beach. Which pitchers seem to be harnessing their control and getting strikeouts/swings and misses, and which shouldn't be pitching in a game situation yet.

Is there anyone who caught your attention this spring who you haven't mentioned much about? Yahil Melendez got the most ABs - he's young - hopefully someone to watch develop, Geuri Lubo transitioned to the outfield but will need to improve his hitting if he's going to stay there, Anderson Suriel has been around awhile and seems to have had a great spring offensively, Adan Sanchez only had 19 ABs but wow he took advantage of those, you had said Eriandys Ramon was advanced and in limited ABs hit the ball well.

I think I remember you telling us that Yenrri Rojas performed the best of the pitchers but isn't necessarily the top pitching prospect in AZ. Who do you have ahead of him (Mule, McCullogh, Rujano probably)? What is Rojas' pitch mix like?

Anyway - thanks as always!

Watched ACL Cubs beat the Angels 2-0 yesterday. Nazier Mule was the headline. 2 innings, 5 Ks and according to Cub staff he hit 99 on the gun but was mostly in 97 range. His high fastball was deadly. He looked great and on top of everything else, he is a very nice young man.

Yennri Rojas looked much improved with 5 Ks and only one walk in 4.2 innings. Rojas was a walk machine last year.

Dermiche Valdez was the offensive star. He tripled off the left center wall and scored the first run. Earlier he just missed a home run with a 415 foot fly ball to dead center,  just in front of the 420 foot sign. Jose Escobar, who hit well in Arizona last year, went 3-3 and scored the second run.

It was fun watching Corey Ray getting doused with several buckets of cold water after his first win as a manager.

Although he is still a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL), Naz Mule's FB velo has been increasing with every outing as he gets stronger and stronger. I would say he projects a lot like Michael Arias, which is to say a "high-leverage" RP. If so, he could move VERY fast through the pipeline. In fact, it would appear that he is just about ready to get moved-up to Myrtle Beach (TBD).

Mule was scratched from his scheduled start in the Cubs last EXST game at Giants Thursday night so he could start the first ACL game Saturday morning at Angels. That pushed Yenrri Rojas (who was supposed to start the ACL opener on Saturday) to a piggy-back role behind Mule, but Rojas still went 4.1 IP.

Also, both Jaxon Wiggins and Ethan Roberts threw "live" BP again in the stadium Friday afternoon, so they should be game-ready, probably for next Friday night at Sloan Park versus Guardians (Roberts is throwing just one inning per outing while Wiggins is throwing two innings, so Roberts might get into a game before Wiggins does).

Otherwise, Freilyn Silverio / Wilme More will likely piggy-back Tuesday night versus Padres at Sloan Park, and Luis Martinez-Gomez will very likely start the game versus Dodgers on Thursday night at Sloan.

Y. Rojas was clearly the Cubs #1 SP and Martinez-Gomez was the Cubs #2 SP (in terms of game performance) at EXST (and Luis A. Reyes was very good too in a multi-inning RP role), although Naz Mule and Miguel Cruz (who was virtually unhittable at EXST) were actually considered to be the Cubs pitching prospects at EXST with the highest "ceilings." (The 6'4 235 20-year old Cruz was also the Cubs top pitching prospect in the DSL in 2023, and he may have the best pure "stuff" among the pitchers at ACL Cubs, although he has a LOT of difficulty commanding it and so throwing strikes and walks are a big problem for him).

I just want to point out again that the height / weight numbers and other things like whether the player hits right or left or switch are wrong in many cases at sites like Baseball Reference and milb.com. The info listed above in my EXST Final Stats post have the players' correct & current height & weight (and other relevant information) per the Cubs themselves.

It's Cubs 2023 2nd round pick Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS) / Naz Mule "piggyback" tonight (Friday) for ACL Cubs versus Guardians, then Yenrri Rojas (shooting for five innings / 75-80 pitches) goes tomorrow (Saturday) at Guardians.

Wiggins, Mule, Y. Rojas (and Juan Bello) could be 4/5 of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans starting rotation very soon.

This will be Wiggins' pro game debut after three "live" BP outings (he did not pitch in ACL or at AZ Instructs last year after being drafted and he did not throw in any Cactus League Minor League Camp or Extended Spring Training games this season). His FB was sitting 98 in "live" BP, although he did have some difficulty throwing strikes.

JAXON WIGGINS:

1ST INNING:

BALL, BALL, 5-3 GO

BALL, 6-3 GO

BALL, BALL, BALL, K-LOOKING, BALL (WALK)

BALL, K-SWINGING, K-LOOKING, BALL (SB), K-LOOKING (STRIKEOUT)

2ND INNING:

FOUL, BALL, K-SWINGING, FOUL, BALL, FOUL, BALL, P-5

BALL, K-SWINGING, K-LOOKING, K-SWINGING (STRIKEOUT)

K-SWINGING, K-LOOKING, BALL, BALL, BALL, HOME RUN (OVER LEFT-CENTER FIELD FENCE JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE BATTER'S EYE)

33 PITCHES (17 STRIKES - FIVE SWING & MISS, THREE FOULS, FOUR BALLS IN PLAY, FIVE CALLED STRIKES)

FB 94-96 (T - 97-98)

SL 84-86

Struggled to throw strikes initially (threw only three strikes among first 11 pitches) before getting locked-in (pitches 12-29). Then he clearly hit a wall at pitch # 30 when after getting ahead 0-2 he threw three consecutive non-competitive balls out of the strike zone and surrendered a HR on pitch # 33.

What appeared to be a poor outing for Naz Mule last night included two infield singles (one a "sawed-off" broken bat where the barrel struck the baserunner between 1st & 2nd), an error by catcher Michael Carico on a play at the plate, a miss by Carico on a third strike where Adan Sanchez dropped the throw to 1st, and difficulty by Carico receiving Mule's electric stuff (Carico is well below-average defensively). Mule kept his cool during the inning but was clearly frustrated after being relieved.

man...busch can't even make contact on anything breaking lately, even light breaking fastballs.  he's either frozen or misses badly.

Unlike most of the Cubs position players, Michael Busch can be optioned to the minors, and given his long slump I think it would be a good idea to option him to AAA and let him get back on track.

He clearly "has nothing more to prove" at AAA and he clearly can hit MLB pitching (he did hit home runs in five consecutive games earlier in the season), but right now he is lost. If he did not have minor league options available, that would be one thing, but he does, so he should be sent to AAA for a while until he can get hot again.

One thing that had been proven this year is that Mike Tauchman can hit LHP and does not need to be platooned. That was not the case earlier in his career. As one would expect, Tauchman has more power versus RHP, but he has a decent AVG versus LHP and he also has a higher OBP versus LHP than he does versus RHP. So Tauchman needs to play every day. That's for sure.

Quick update on the status of Cubs players with respect to the maximum five optional assignments permitted per season (I have not listed the ones with five left):

TWO LEFT:
Jose Cuas (at AAA Iowa)

THREE LEFT:
Luke Little (on MLB 26-man Active List roster)
Miles Mastrobuoni (at AAA Iowa)

FOUR LEFT:
Alexander Canario (at AAA Iowa)
Pete Crow-Armstrong (at AAA Iowa)
Matt Mervis (at AAA Iowa)
Daniel Palencia (on MLB 15-dayt IL)
Keegan Thompson (on MLB 15-day IL)
Hayden Wesneski (on MLB 26-man Active List roster)

Once a player has been optioned to the minors five times in a given season, Outright Assignment Waivers (which are irrevocable) must be secured before the player can be optioned a sixth time. (As long as the player doesn't have the right to elect free-agency after being outrighted, the club could also take the opportunity to just outright the player if he isn't claimed, since Outright Assignment Waivers would have been secured).

The only exceptions to the five option rule are if a player is optioned to the minors prior to MLB Opening Day (option doesn't count toward the five), or if a player is optioned to the minors after serving as the 27th man in a doubleheader (option doesn't count toward the five), or if a player on Optional Assignment is traded and the player's new club options the player to the minors within 24 hours and without first adding the player to the club's MLB Active List roster (option doesn't count toward the five), and if a player who has already been optioned five times is claimed off Outright Assignment Waivers (claiming club gets a sixth option, as long as the player was not on the claiming club's MLB 40-man roster sometime earlier in the season).

So the Cubs need to be careful with moving Jose Cuas, Miles Mastrobuoni , and (most especially) Luke Little back & forth on the Des Moines - Chicago shuttle. I don't suppose the Cubs would necessarily be heartbroken to lose Cuas or Mastrobuoni off waivers (if it came to that), but Little is another matter entirely.

Former Cubs minor league OF Yonathan Perlaza is hitting 327/405/624 with 15 HR and 15 doubles in 51 games for Hanwha in the KBO. He leads the league in SLG, is tied for lead in HR, is 2nd in OPS, and is tied for 4th in doubles.

I know they’re managing innings especially for Brown, but I feel like if we’re rolling out our top 5 SP, it includes Assad and Brown, and Wicks would be in Iowa. Wicks is solid and I think will continue to be, but Brown has been awesome and Assad has been our second best SP this year.

110%...unlike the decision to put in t.miller to protect a 4 run lead with 1 on and get the last out of the game.

this is the most over-managed thing i've seen of counsell with the cubs.

Seemed like the right decision from my vantage! 😂

What is this whole clutch hit/score multiple runs thing the Cubs are doing? They can do that? And it’s legal? Nice!

    scoring from 2nd on a 60ft hit...a hit off the pitcher's elbow...ow.

megill walking off the mound towards where the ball was rolling was a poor decision even if he was nope'ing himself out of the game to the dugout.
