Cubs vs. Giants: Series Thread (Games 138-140)

The Cubs split the series in Cincinnati, dropping to 3.5 back of Milwaukee and maintaining their second Wild Card spot. They return to Wrigley on Labor Day to take on the 70 and 67 Giants. San Francisco enters the series in a four way tie for the last Wild Card spot. See below for daily matchups.

Game 138, Monday, September 4, 1:20 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (15-3, 2.69 ERA)
SFG: RHP Logan Webb (9-11, 3.49 ERA)

Game 139, Tuesday, September 5, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 3.59 ERA)
SFG: TBD

D'backs Cruise Past Cubs at Talking Stick

Yerald Nin drilled a two-run double, singled twice, and scored a run, and Jakey Josepha singled twice, walked, stole a base, scored a run, and drove in another, leading the Diamondbacks to a 9-3 victory over the Cubs in Arizona Instructional League "Bridge Camp" game action Saturday morning on Whirlwind Field at Talking Stick at Salt River Fields, east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Batting RH versus a RHP, Reggie Preciado (no longer switch-hitting) clubbed a solo HR over the LF fence to account for one of the three Cub runs.

Cubs @ Reds: Series Thread (Games 134-137)

The Cubs closed out August by squeezing two wins from a three-game set against the Brewers at Wrigley. The barely present offense couldn't overcome a poor inning from Taillon to open the series. But Steele, Hendricks and the bullpen gutted out a pair of one-run wins to bring the Cubs to three back in the Central and to retain the second Wild Card spot.

Angels Let Offense Loose at Diablo

Capri Ortiz doubled in the 1st, reached base on an error and scored in the 3rd, singled and scored in the 5th, hammered a two-run double in the 6th, and stroked a sacrifice fly in the 7th, Landon Wallace singled twice, doubled, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, Edgar Alfonso ripped three singles, scored three runs, and drove-in two more, John Wimmer doubled, walked twice, and scored two runs, and Caleb Ketchup doubled, walked twice, and scored a run, helping the Angels batter the Cubs 19-7 in Arizona Instructional League Opening Day game action Wednesday morning on Field # 3 at t

Cubs vs. Brewers: Series Thread (Games 131-133)

The Cubs have gone seven for their last ten, climbing into the second Wild Card position. They next get their opportunity against the Milwaukee Brewers, who are eight are on an eight-game winning streak that extended their NL Central lead to four. This is the first of two crucial series remaining in which the Cubs directly confront the Brew Crew. See below for matchups in this three game series at Wrigley Field.

Game 131, Monday, August 28, 7:05 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (7-8, 5.60 ERA)
MIL: LHP Wade Miley (6-3, 3.18 ERA)

Cubs @ Pirates: Series Thread (Games 127-130)

The Cubs won another close series, going 2-3 in Detroit. They arrive in Pittsburgh tied with the Reds for a Wild Card spot and 3.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. The Pirates have two TBD starters in this four game series. So, find matchups below such as they stand.

Game 127, Thursday, August 24, 6:05 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (14-3, 2.80 ERA)
PIT: TBD

Game 128, Friday, August 25, 6:05 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 3.83 ERA)
PIT: RHP Mitch Keller (10-8, 4.22 ERA)

Cubs @ Tigers: Series Thread (Games 124-126)

The Cubs held on for a 4-3 win on Sunday to take two of three from the Royals. That puts them alone in the third Wild Card spot and three back in the division as they arrive in Detroit. See below for matchups.

Game 124, Monday, August 21, 5:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Javier Assad (2-2, 3.11 ERA)
DET: RHP Alex Faedo (2-4, 5.16 ERA)

Game 125, Tuesday, August 22, 5:40 pm central
CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (9-8, 4.92 ERA)
DET: RHP Reese Olson (2-5, 4.83 ERA)

Cubs vs. Royals: Series Thread (Games 121-123)

The Cubs escaped a two-game sweep by virtue of heroics from Morel's walk-off three-run shot and three consecutive strikeouts from Michael Fulmer. They will continue without Marcus Stroman, whose timeline for return is now a known unknown. They take on the Royals at Wrigley next. See below for matchups.

Game 121, Friday, August 18, 1:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (7-7, 5.71 ERA)
KC: LHP Cole Ragans (3-4, 4.21 ERA)

Cubs vs. White Sox: Series Thread (Games 119-120)

The Cubs return to Wrigley to face their cross town rivals. They've made up a ton of ground in the last few weeks and have a forgiving schedule ahead of them before facing the Brewers and Reds when the calendar turns over toward September. Marcus Stroman is expected back for the second game but has not been activated as of my writing. See below for matchups such as they stand.

Game 119, Tuesday, August 15, 7:05 pm central
CHW: RHP Touki Toussaint (1-5, 4.27 ERA)
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 3.96 ERA)

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
