Cubs @ Blue Jays: Series Thread (Games 116-118)

The Cubs came short on their comeback effort and went 1-2 in New York. They'll cross national boundaries to take on their next opponents, the Blue Jays. See below for matchups.

Game 116, Friday, August 11, 6:07 pm central
CHC: RHP Javier Assad (1-2, 3.35 ERA)
TOR: RHP Jose Berrios (9-7, 3.38 ERA)

Game 117, Saturday, August 12, 2:07 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (13-3, 2.68 ERA)
TOR: RHP Chris Bassitt (11-6, 3.87 ERA)

Cubs @ Mets: Series Thread (Games 113-115)

The Cubs went 5-2 on a homestand that landed them in a tie with the Reds for second in the Central and for the last NL Wild Card spot. They turn around with no off day to begin a six game road trip that takes them to New York and Toronto. They leave Chicago having taken two of three from the best team in the NL. They also taxed their primary bullpen arms heavily in the process. (No backup cacthers were called on to relieve in the course of that series.) They may have to patch things together to cover high leverage innings before the next day off on Thursday.

Cubs vs. Atlanta: Series Thread (Games 110-112)

The Cuns knocked the Reds out of first in the central, taking three of four and outscoring Cincinnati 46 to 24 in the series. They are now 2.5 behind Milwaukee as Atlanta comes into town to complete the seven game homestand. The energized squad, reinforced by Jeimer Candelario but down one Marcus Stroman, will be tested against the NL best Atlanta team. See below for matchups.

Game 110, Friday, August 4, 1:20 pm central
ATL: LHP Max Fried (2-1, 2.08 ERA)
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-5, 3.49 ERA)

Cubs vs. Reds: Series Thread (Games 106-109)

The Cubs ended an eight-game winning streak on Sunday, settling at four games back in the division. The Reds come to Chicago for a four-game series, with both teams likely trying to fill out their rosters before the impending trade deadline. See below for daily matchups.

Game 106, Monday, July 31, 7:05 pm central
CIN: LHP Andrew Abbott (6-2, 1.90 ERA)
CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (10-7, 3.51 ERA)

Game 107, Tuesday, August 1, 7:05 pm central
CIN: RHP Ben Lively (4-6, 3.76 ERA)
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (11-3, 2.87 ERA)

Cubs @ Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 102-105)

The Cubs enjoyed a two-game sweep of the Southsidees on their way to a 50-51 record. That puts them a game within .500 and 6 games behind the Brewers in the Nl Central. They visit the Cardinals for a four-game weekend series ending just short of the trade deadline. The Cards would surely like to spoil the Cubs' hopes for 2023 as a consolation for their own disappointing season. Matchups for this pivotal series await below.

Game 102, Thursday, July 27, 6:45 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (10-3, 2.95 ERA)
STL: RHP Miles Mikolas (6-5, 4.33 ERA)

Cubs @ White Sox: Series Thread (Games 100 and 101)

The Cubs have won the last three games to improve to 48-51, clinging to third in the division and pushing the Cardinals further back in fourth place. They enter this series seven games out of first and with only seven games between them and the trade deadline. Hot streaks and cold streaks would have to coincide for Bellinger and Stroman to remain Cubs in August--but that remains with the realm of the possible for now. See below for matchups against the White Sox.

Cubs vs. Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 96-99)

The Cubs stand at 45-50 as the Cardinals come to Chicago for a four-game series. This one will close on July 23, roughly one week prior to the trade deadline, and could either seal the Cubs' position as sellers or put them into another precarious week as they attempt to convince a reticent sounding front office and ownership. See below for the daily matchups as they stand now.

Game 96, Thursday, July 20, 7:05 pm central
STL: LHP Steven Matz (0-7, 4.86 ERA)
CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (10-6, 2.88 ERA)

Cubs vs. Nationals: Series Thread (Games 93-95)

The Cubs dropped the rubber match to the Red Sox despite a scoreless inning from tucker Barnhart , who showed off nearly 40 mph separation between his heater and his changeup. They're joined by the basement-dwelling Nationals for three games next. See below for daily matchups.

Game 93, Monday, July 17, 7:05 pm central
WSH: LHP MacKenzie Gore (4-7, 4.42 ERA)
CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (7-6, 4.31 ERA)

Game 94, Tuesday, July 18, 7:05 pm central
WSH: RHP Trevor Williams (5-5, 4.42 ERA)
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (3-6, 6.15 ERA)

Cubs vs. Red Sox: Series Thread (Games 90-92)

The Cubs return from the All-Star break and begin a homestand against the 48-43 Red Sox. This ten-game homestand may determine the Cubs' approach to the trade deadline, despite featuring no NL Central contenders--the last place Cardinals not withstanding. See below for daily matchups.

Game 90, Friday, July 14, 7:40 pm central
BOS: RHP Brayan Bello (6-5, 3.04 ERA)
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (3-3, 3.04 ERA)

Game 91, Saturday, July 15, 1:20 pm central
BOS: LHP James Paxton (5-1, 2.73 ERA)
CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (9-6, 2.96 ERA)

Daniel Brown, LHP
L/L, 6'3 200, age 20
Campbell
COLLEGE JR
COMMENT: Converted outfielder... Hasn't pitched much at Campbell (four games), but when he has pitched he has displayed a 100+ MPH FB and has been literally unhittable... struck out the side 1-2-3 for the only three outs he recorded this season, but unfortunately he has also walked nine with four WP (albeit no hits allowed) in his other three outings...

18th ROUND (536)
Brian Kalmer, 3B
R/R, 6'2 215, age 22
Gonzaga
COLLEGE SR (REDSHIRT JR)
COMMENT: Began his career at hometown Arizona State but didn't play much, so he transferred to Wabash Valley JC in Mt. Carmel, Illinois... he was named NJCAA National Player of the Year in his one year playing JC ball, as he led the Warriors to the NJCAA World Series... then he transferred to Gonzaga as a junior redshirt, and hit 358/454/682, with 15 HR & 51 RBI, 16 doubles, and 36 walks and 56 strikeouts, in 52 games (240 PA) for the Zags in 2023... he has plus-power to all fields, but he also has lots of swing & miss in his game (23% K-rate in 2023)... a below-average defender at 3B, Kalmer projects as a first-baseman in pro ball...

19th ROUND (566)
Nick Dean, RHP
R/R, 6'3 180, age 22
U. of Maryland
COLLEGE SR
COMMENT: College teammate of Cubs 1st round pick Matt Shaw... a reliable hurler who made all of his scheduled starts, Dean pitched in 43 games (all 43 as a SP) in his college career... was the Terrapins #3 (Sunday) starter in both 2021 and 2022 before getting promoted to the #2 (Saturday) slot in 2023... went 3-2 with a 5.54 ERA & 1.47 WHIP in 2023, while allowing 78 hits (13 HR), with 32/77 BB/K in 74.2 IP (15 games - 15 GS)... the 2023 ERA and WHIP were the highest (worst) of his career (his best season was 2021), as his performance has declined steadily each season... features a 90-93 MPH FB, a swing & miss CH, a slurvy SL and a slow CV...

20th ROUND (596)
Drew Bowser, 3B
R/R, 6'4 225, age 21
Stanford
COLLEGE JR
COMMENT: High school teammate of Cubs top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong at Harvard-Westlake HS in L. A... played SS, was a three-time team captain, won the Perfect Game High School All American Classic Home Run Challenge at Petco Field in San Diego in 2018, was named a Perfect Game High School All-American in 2019, and played for Team USA 18-U in 2019 and helped lead his team to a silver medal at the WBCA World Cup in South Korea... he was projected to be a potential Top 5 round pick coming out of HS in 2020 (the same year buddy PCA was drafted in the 1st round by the Mets), but he wasn't selected in the shortened (five round) CoViD draft, and so he honored his commitment to Stanford... he played both 2B and 3B at Stanford 2021-23, and hit 287/350/526 with 39 HR & 139 RBI, 38 doubles, and 64/196 BB/K in 175 games (754 PA) over the course of three seasons in Palo Alto... he also played two summers for Yarmouth in the Cape Cod League (2021 and 2022), but he hit only 181/278/234 with one HR and 36 K in 108 PA (33% K-rate) with a wood bat... he is a below-average runner with a plus arm and plus raw power, but the "hit tool" is well below average, and he has difficulty making contact...

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

  • crunch (view)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.
