Cubs 2023 Rule 5 Draft & Minor League Free-Agency Watch List

6/4 UPDATE

After signing two second contract free agents for their DSL squads on Saturday (1B Francis Reynoso and RHP Jeral Vizcaino), the Cubs signed a third second-contract free-agent on Sunday, RHP (ex-OF) Welington Santana (ex-BAL).

If he is signed beyond 2023, W. Santana will be eligible for selection in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft (he signed with the Orioles as an 18 year old in 2019).

Cubs Rally Monkey Angels at Diablo

Geuri Lubo (RBI triple), Dilan Granadillo (RBI single), and Jefferson Rojas (RBI single) contributed run scoring hits to highlight a four-run 9th inning, and closer Gabriel Agrazal struck out Cristian Garcia  (swinging) with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the lead (and the victory), as the Cubs rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to score three in the 7th and four in the 9th and then held on to edge the Angels 8-7 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday evening at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

Amaral Shows Off His Game at Talking Stick

Daniel Amaral (son of long-time MLB INF-OF Rich Amaral) reached base five times (a single in the 1st, an RBI double in the 3rd, a two-run double in the 5th, a two-run single in the 6th, and a walk in the 7th), collected five RBI, stole two bases, and scored a run, Cuba Bess tripled, walked three times, and scored a run, Francisco Ortiz belted a double, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, Juan Castillo ripped an RBI double and scored a run and collected another RBI with a sacrifice fly, SP Manuel Olivares hurled three innings of shutout ball, and the Rockies took advantage of twelve

Cubs @ Padres: Series Thread (Games 53-56)

The Cubs did a solid impression of a winning team, taking two of three from the Rays and coming up a few innings of relief shy of a sweep. They enjoy a day off today and begin again in San Diego. See below for matchups in this four-game series.

Game 53, Friday, June 2, 8:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (0-3, 8.04 ERA)
SDP: RHP Michael Wacha (5-1, 3.45 ERA)

Cub Arms Punch Out Angels at Riverview

Ismael Mena, Ed Howard, and Adan Sanchez stroked run scoring singles to highlight a three-run 3rd, Christopher Paciolla belted a solo HR, and Luis Devers, Drew Gray, Kenyi Perez, Scott Kobos, and Gleiber Morales combined to hurl a three-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts, as the Cubs blanked the Angels 4-0 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Tuesday evening on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

EXST CUBS LINEUP:

Angels Dim Cubs Under the Lights at Diablo

Anthony Scull drilled a solo HR and a single, Luis Eduardo Rodriguez belted two triples, scored a run, and drove-in another, and SP Carson Fulmer and five relievers combined to spin a three-hitter, helping the Angels defeat the Cubs 7-3 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday evening at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

Jefferson Rojas ripped a monster two-run HR high over the LF fence and onto Westcourt Way to account for two of the three Cub runs (the other run scored as the result of a bases loaded HBP). The Cubs also stole six bases.

Cubs vs. Rays: Series Thread (Games 53-55)

The Cubs have three games to turn around a 2-4 homestand. They suffered a three game sweep at the hands of the Reds and are now joined at Wrigley by the 39-16 Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays sit atop a strong AL East and hold the best record in baseball. The Cubs currently find themselves at the opposite end of the spectrum, falling to last in the NL Central and holding a record better than only the farcical Oakland Athletics. They remain, however, only 5.5 back in the division. See below for matchups.

Giants Walk to Victory and Raino Moves to the Mound

Javier Francisco drilled an RBI double in the 3rd inning and picked-up another RBI on a GO in the 5th, Lazaro Morales singled twice, stole a base, and drove-in a run, and Giants batters took advantage of eight walks, three HBP, and a WP to plate six runs despite managing only four hits, en route to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning at the San Francisco Giants Papago Park Complex in Phoenix, AZ.

Thanks as always, AZPhil. Here’s to a loud summer from these guys!

ive never seen hendricks have less fun on the mound, even in games where he's done worse.

Good call on both there! Which ump is it?

Case in point on the error right there, can't really see Morel doing worse than that.......

1.1 innings.  hope you got your bets in early.

Why can't Morel play 3B instead of Wisdom?

Hendricks better hammer the outside edge & see what calls he gets.

Also want to see YG’s PAs… being DH is the perfect role to express displeasure.

    For your 2nd point:

A 2025 lineup before free agents would consist of 13 players from this group:

    CF PCA/Alcantara

    RF Suzuki/Velazquez/Davis

    LF Happ/Cassie/Perlaza/Roederer

    2B Hoerner/Murray Jr./Strumpf

    3B Morel/Slaughter/Vazquez

    SS Swanson

    1B Mervis/Murray Jr./McGeary

    C Amaya/Aliendo

(Hoerner, Swanson, Happ, and Suzuki would likely only move to another position than where they are currently if somehow a better option was available defensively)

I'm all aboard the Ohtani train as a free agent.

For right now, it IS Jed's fault that Dross only has what he has to field a lineup; but not playing these young guys everyday is just sheer ignorance, and totally on Dross, unless he's being given explicit instructions to not play the young guys, which I find highly improbable. Morel, Amaya, and Mervis should play all games but maybe once a week, if only to see what they have; look at Morel last game, he walked twice, prayerfully that's him adjusting. Mervis can't adjust if he's not playing. Barnhart should be there as a mascot, same with Rios, Mancini, and Mastrobuoni; the players with potential upside (Mervis, Amaya, Morel) need to play against both right and left handed SP's. I could go on, but then I'd digress.......
