Zamudio Blast Paves the Way for Cubs at Maryvale

Kevin Zamudio slugged a solo HR to put the Cubs on the board in the top of the 1st, Jhonny Bethencourt and Yovanny Cuevas drilled run-scoring singles to highlight a three-run 2nd, and Jesus Camargo hurled four innings of one-run ball, leading the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday morning on Field #7 (AKA "Paul Molitor Field") at the Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix, AZ.

Cubs 2016 5th round draft pick RHP Bailey Clark made his 2017 game debut today, after spending the 2016-17 school year finishing his degree at Duke University. As a result, he missed post-2016 AZ Instructs and has been limited in his availability for 2017 Minor League Camp and Extended Spring Training as well. Now that he is ready to pitch in EXST games, he will likely be stretched-out as a starter over the next couple of weeks, and if all goes well, he very well could be the 5th man in the Eugene starting rotation when the NWL begins play next month. (After easily retiring the first two batters he faced on an F-7 and a K-swinging, Clark threw eight of his last ten pitches for balls and was unable to retire the side before being relieved).

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHSP Erling Moreno has been moved-up to South Bend after two Cactus League EXST starts.

Erling Moreno Cactus League EXST game stats:
2 GAMES (2 GS)
5.79 ERA - 1.71 WHIP - .297 OppBA
4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 4/3 GO/FO, 60% strikes, 17.2 PPI

Trey Martin Celebrates Return to Lineup with Home Run

Trey Martin (on AA Tennessee 7-day DL since April 15th) blasted a solo HR, Jonathan Sierra ripped an RBI triple, singled and scored, and stole a base, Rafael Narea singled, walked twice, and stole three bases, and SP Javier Assad hurled three innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts, helping the Cubs defeat the Diamondbacks 6-2 in Memorial Day Cactus League game action Monday morning on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Cubs 2016 23rd round draft pick Delvin Zinn (March 2017 stress fracture in right foot) saw his first game action since Minor League Camp, playing 2nd base for five innings and going 0-2 with a walk. Zinn was also drafted by the Cubs out of HS in 2015 but did not sign, instead opting to attend Mississippi State and play baseball and basketball. But he transferred to Itawamba JC after only one semester at MSU, before being drafted by the Cubs for the second year in a row last June. Today is Zinn's 20th birthday.

Reaching base three times today, 19-year old Rafael Narea has gone 18-40 (.450) over his last 14 games since starting the Cactus League EXST season 0-14. Thanks to his recent hot streak, Narea is now hitting 333/463/429 in 21 Cactus League EXST games (67 PA) with only two strikeouts, a team-leading nine walks (Miguel Amaya is second with eight), and a team-leading ten SB (no other Cubs player has more than three). Hre also has two doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. Signed as a 16-year old IFA in July 2014, Narea is an above-average defender at three infield positions (SS, 2B, and 3B).

Cubs Pitchers Too Wild To Win at Riverview

Jarrett Costa drilled a two-run double and an RBI single and the Athletics took advantage of nine walks, a HBP, and five wild pitches, defeating the Cubs 8-4 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Miguel Amaya (two-run blast) and Marcus Mastrobuoni (solo shot) contributed home runs for the Cubs in a losing cause.

The game was called after eight innings of play.

Amaya's HR was his team-leading 3rd long-ball, and with three more hits in the game he is now hitting a robust 339/411/581 in 23 Cactus League EXST games (73 PA). In addition to leading the team in HR, Amaya also is second on the team in RBI and tied for 4th in doubles, he has thrown out 47% of opposing base-stealers (12-26), picked-off another runner, and has committed only one passed ball and one error as a catcher (he also committed an E-3 while playing 1B). No question Miguel Amaya has been MVP of the EXST Cubs (so far), and it's getting to the point where it would be a shock if the 18-year old wunderkind doesn't skip AZL and go directly to Eugene.

Veteran MLB RHRP Fernando Rodriguez (on AAA Iowa 7-day DL - September 2016 lat surgery) made his first appearance in a Cactus League EXST game Saturday (he previously had thrown in EXST "sim" games and intrasquad games only), working a 1-2-3 12-pitch inning (P-4, 6-3, 6-3). A few more rehab outings like that and Rodriguez should be ready to join the I-Cubs, with a call-up to Chicago later in the season a distinct possibility.

With the loss to the A's, the Cubs record in 2017 Cactus League Extemded Spring Training games fell to 19-21-7.
