Cubs @ Cardinal: Series Thread (Games 75-76)

The Cubs and Cardinals travel to London to show off the Great American Pastime across the pond. With extra days off to accommodate travel, the Cubs are able to line up their top starting pitchers and hold Drew Smyly for a potential relief appearance. See below for matchupa.

Game 75, Saturday, June 24, 12:10 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (7-2, 2.71 ERA)

Cubs vs Pirates: Series Thread (Games 72-74)

The Cubs ended a five game win streak that despite a valiant effort in the final game of the series against the Orioles. They'll greet the Pirates for a return visit to Wrigley, only a weekend removed from sweeping them out of first place in the NL Central. The Cubs (33-38) enter the series in 4th place and four games behind the now leading Brewers. The Pirates (34-36) may enter with revenge on their mind, if they are not preoccupied by letting their surprising hold on the NL Central slip away. The Buccos bring along former Cub and well-travelled MLB veteran Rich Hill.

Cubs vs. Orioles: Series Thread (Games 69-71)

The Cubs climbed three games in the NL Central standings by sweeping the first-place Pirates. Having forestalled deadline seller status for now, they'll greet the 43-25 soaring O's for another three game set at Wrigley. Bellinger returned already to reinforce the offense, and Steele is expected to make his return to the rotation as well. See below for matchups.

Game 69, Friday, June 16, 1:20 pm central

The Cubs ended their trip to San Francisco on a low note despite coming a few outs short of a no-hitter the previous day. They return to Wrigley and NL Central opponents as they take on the 34-30 Pirates. The Pirates have clung to a surprising lead in the NL Central, now leading the Brewers by one game. See below for matchups (such as they stand).

Cubs @ Giants: Series Thread (Games 63-65)

The Cubs were no match for Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani and suffered a sweep in Anaheim as a result. They'll turn northward and try their luck in San Francisco next. The Giants enter the series 32-30 to the Cubs 26-36. See below for matchups.

Cubs @ Angels: Series Thread (Games 60-62)

The Cubs continue their tour of the West Coast with a stop in Anaheim. The Angels enter the series in third in the NL West, while the Cubs can console themselves that they still have a better record than the Cardinals--and that no one is really out of the NL Central "race" yet. The Cubs will dodge their 2024 Opening Day starter and primary DH question mark, Shohei Ohtani. See below for matchups.

Game 60, Tuesday, June 6, 8:38 pm central

LAA: LHP Tyler Anderson (2-1, 5.47 ERA)

Cubs Rally Monkey Angels at Diablo

Geuri Lubo (RBI triple), Dilan Granadillo (RBI single), and Jefferson Rojas (RBI single) contributed run scoring hits to highlight a four-run 9th inning, and closer Gabriel Agrazal struck out Cristian Garcia  (swinging) with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the lead (and the victory), as the Cubs rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to score three in the 7th and four in the 9th and then held on to edge the Angels 8-7 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday evening at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

Amaral Shows Off His Game at Talking Stick

Daniel Amaral (son of long-time MLB INF-OF Rich Amaral) reached base five times (a single in the 1st, an RBI double in the 3rd, a two-run double in the 5th, a two-run single in the 6th, and a walk in the 7th), collected five RBI, stole two bases, and scored a run, Cuba Bess tripled, walked three times, and scored a run, Francisco Ortiz belted a double, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, Juan Castillo ripped an RBI double and scored a run and collected another RBI with a sacrifice fly, SP Manuel Olivares hurled three innings of shutout ball, and the Rockies took advantage of twelve

Cub Arms Punch Out Angels at Riverview

Ismael Mena, Ed Howard, and Adan Sanchez stroked run scoring singles to highlight a three-run 3rd, Christopher Paciolla belted a solo HR, and Luis Devers, Drew Gray, Kenyi Perez, Scott Kobos, and Gleiber Morales combined to hurl a three-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts, as the Cubs blanked the Angels 4-0 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Tuesday evening on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

EXST CUBS LINEUP:

Angels Dim Cubs Under the Lights at Diablo

Anthony Scull drilled a solo HR and a single, Luis Eduardo Rodriguez belted two triples, scored a run, and drove-in another, and SP Carson Fulmer and five relievers combined to spin a three-hitter, helping the Angels defeat the Cubs 7-3 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday evening at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

Jefferson Rojas ripped a monster two-run HR high over the LF fence and onto Westcourt Way to account for two of the three Cub runs (the other run scored as the result of a bases loaded HBP). The Cubs also stole six bases.

Cubs vs. Rays: Series Thread (Games 53-55)

The Cubs have three games to turn around a 2-4 homestand. They suffered a three game sweep at the hands of the Reds and are now joined at Wrigley by the 39-16 Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays sit atop a strong AL East and hold the best record in baseball. The Cubs currently find themselves at the opposite end of the spectrum, falling to last in the NL Central and holding a record better than only the farcical Oakland Athletics. They remain, however, only 5.5 back in the division. See below for matchups.

Giants Walk to Victory and Raino Moves to the Mound

Javier Francisco drilled an RBI double in the 3rd inning and picked-up another RBI on a GO in the 5th, Lazaro Morales singled twice, stole a base, and drove-in a run, and Giants batters took advantage of eight walks, three HBP, and a WP to plate six runs despite managing only four hits, en route to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning at the San Francisco Giants Papago Park Complex in Phoenix, AZ.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
